Pentax Q Camera + 8.5mm f1.9 Lens for $199.95 (+ $9.95 Shipping) at Ted's Cameras

1180

Yeah I know, who cares about the Pentax Q when you can get larger sensor mirrorless cameras like Micro Four Thirds or the NEX systems? I myself am already heavily invested in Micro Four Thirds. But (1) this is a pretty sweet price, and (2) it seems like it's actually capable of taking some very nice looking pics at the hands of a competent shooter. Check out the real world user review below for some thoughts and sample pics.

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/194467-pentax-q-…

I haven't done an extensive search so I don't know if this is the cheapest but the nearest price I've found is close to double the price of this. Whether or not it's good value, I'll leave that up to you. I think there's already a newer model so you might want to keep that in mind if you're thinking of getting this. EDIT: Apparently it's been discontinued. Thanks for the info shawn_low.

See below for the description on Ted's.

"Does size matter? When it comes to cameras, yes. Introducing the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market, the Pentax Q. Designed for those wanting a camera which they can fully control, change lenses over and fit in their pocket, the Pentax Q delivers. When you consider the size of the 12 Megapixel sensor, the Q’s image quality truly is miraculous, and the dramatic price plummet since its release has made it all the more affordable for those wanting a dynamic and pocket-sized camera. The Pentax Q still offers Full High Definition video recording, and even in-camera HDR rendering. The Q really is a great thing in a small package."

And some quick specs:

    • Me two! why… I don't know… It does look pretty damn cool though!

  • I have a canon 1100d but found it too bulky when I travelled overseas with it. Not sure if I should buy this :S So troubled!

  • i'm going o be a pain but i really want the white one..do u think places like harvey norman would price match for a white?

    • +1

Lol no way. This would be below cost and they want to get rid of stuff. They will sell out very soon if not already

  • Seeing as though there are Nikon F to Pentax Q adaptors available, does this mean my Nikon 18-55mm DX kit lens effectively becomes a super telephoto lens of 101-308mm on the Q? (crop factor 5.6)

What would the image quality be like using this?

  • Can i use this camera as a P+S camera?
Is it hard to use for beginner?

    • Just remember, no zoom on this prime lens.

      • Is it worth getting a cheap zoom lens for this camera from ebay?
Or should I just get a P+S and save the hassle?

        • An auto focusing pentax q lens will set you back another 200~300, for that price, you could have bought two p&s cameras.

Its only worth it IF you want more control over your pictures.

Guys, the coupon VE5OFF seems to be for (almost) store wide, tried on various lens and it worked, so if you are planning on buying something else from Teds you can still use the coupon and get that extra discount.

  • Another one bites the dust!

  • Man this is going to get OzBargained, or already has, hope I get a call today…

    • Me too :(

  • Is this text "Due to overwhemingly popularilty of this special, it may take up to week to dispatch your order - thanks for your patience." new on the page…? If so, gives me hope that they might actually fulfil all the orders :D

  • My order status changed from "Processing" to "Printed", what does it mean, anyone?

    • Mine too. Can only hope its coming :(

Hi all, thanks for the huge response to the Pentax Q! Needless to say we are swamped with orders this morning and we have already placed another order to keep up with the demand.
If you have already purchased, please be patient as we fulfil and process all the orders as quickly as possible.
Happy shopping:) We will let you know if it looks like we will run out!

    • Champions! Do you sell any lens for it?

    • Hi rep. The smart thing to do will be to get decent pricing from CRK on lenses and adaptors now and obviously come back and post the deal. :D

      • +6

We are chasing stock for lenses as we speak, hope to be able to update later with information and hopefully an offer for you all. Fingers and lenses crossed :)

I'm interested in the new 15-45/2.8 Zoom no.6 for it, any chance of a good price on it.

    • Hi TEDs, I would like to purchase the Fujifilm X-Pro1 + 35mm f1.4 combo as well, may I ask what would be your best offer? Can you price match other local camera stores? Please PM me if possible. Cheers…

      • +1

You can use our Price Match Request feature on our site. No guarantees, but we will do our best:) Thanks maogua

    • great Customer service…. can't wait to get this baby in the mail… hehe…

  • Where's the cheapest place to get a 5-15mm lens for it?

  • Where can I buy the other lens? I am interested in a Pentax macro lens that can fit the Q. Thanks. The review on the Pentax forums mentions other compatible lens but I'd love to find a local retailer.

  • Jumped on this.

Will replace my large DSLR which is just too big to carry around so it's use for me is limited.

Must get a zoom lens for everyday walkabouts though.

  • Just bought one.
I have a Nikon DSLR and only bought a Sony NEX-5N. no idea why im buying one of these aswell, but the In camera HDR and timelapse does look awesome and bought my cameras cant do it.

Erina Store NSW has 1 left as of 9:51am if anyone wants to buy the last one ! =]

  • i have around 4 pentax lenses that fits my pentax K-X (all lens are auto focus)
can i use all those lens on this baby (and the AF will work)? or i need to buy adapter?

    • need an adapter to use K mount lens and no auto focus :(

      • no AF? that will be a pain to use this as point n shot camera, correct? and during holiday we cannot just simply give this to random people to take picture of ourself, since ordinary people dont know how to use manual focus

        • Correct. IMHO, manual focusing may be a little hard on this as I heard its prone to glare and no viewfinder.

        • gosh.. the adapter is $250!
          http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?is=REG&Q=&A=…

also without AF, can we still do burst mode (taking 6/8pics in a seconds) with this cam?

        • It does have 5fps, but this depends on your memory card and I hear it does 100 photos at a rate of 1.5fps (this might have been the Q10).

Anyway, its a fully featured camera. Nothing (that I can remember) is different from your standard entry level slr (apart from the tiny sensor size)

        • There is a firware update for this camera that allows Shake reduction to operate even when using third party adapters, may not need the Pentax brand adapter after all.

The rep is aware this is on OZB, look above ^

  • I am going to get mine in store this morning. I need to have a look and play around with it first. Is it easy to use? buttons etc I am so used to Nikon. But this whole year I have barely used my DSLR, preferring using iPhone to take pics! didn't even bring a camera when I went overseas. But if it's a great quality compact cam then it's exactly what I need. Will sell my Nikon. The toy lens has good reviews too and is only $70!

    • what/where is "the toy lens has good reviews too and is only $70!" ?

      • Its a lens that take photos as if you had take the photos through a toy camera. Its like a pre-production 'effect' lens.

        • where do you see them? ebay?

    Update
Stock is running low - all our stores stock on hand has been swallowed up! You can still order, but we please ask that you select post out only as stores may not receive further deliveries. Thanks for your understanding
    Cheers

    • so are the orders placed last night ready to be picked up? and will they be held for said individuals?

      • Ditto what he said.

However, I believe email confirmation said to allow up to 24 hours confirmation for pick-up.

        • i don't mind about waiting longer - probably can't pick it up til tomorrow night in fact, but just trying to work out if once you bought it, it's kept on hold for you in line with the order they were purchased or if it's a bum-rush to the counter.

  • +7

How to fix the retail/online economy:

    1) Email great deal to one individual
    2) Supply discount coupon to another individual
    3) Wait for said individuals to post deal and coupon on OzBargain
    4) Wait a further 30 minutes
    5) Economy fixed

  • I ordered last night and the status changed from "processing" to "printed" , what does this mean rep?
My credit card already been charged….

    • +1

I would guess that your order has been assigned to current avail stock as apposed to waiting a week.

    • I hope delivery is not too long…as I need it for a 1 month overseas trip I'm leaving on November 30…..so I hope it gets delivered by then.

  • Damnit just as I was going to buy this for some simple product shots for my office I read the below:(

    http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/pentax_q_review/image…

I still feel like buying it and using it personally if the damn thing is not good enough for product shots

    • If the product shots are for the web, I wouldn't worry about it.

      • Agreed. As long as you're not viewing pics at 100% and printing massive posters I think it should be fine. It seems like a camera where if you learn how to use it properly, it will reward you with some good pics.

        • Thanks guys! I decided to buy since its back in stock now, appreciate the advice!!

    Update
Last 100 units and going fast.
All orders placed for store pick up last night and this morning will receive confirmation that this is indeed possible. there may be some instances where a store collect is not possible - free delivery to your home or work will be applied in these cases.
We really are overwhelmed this morning with orders and we really appreciate everybody's patience.

    • Hi rep how long will delivery to me take? postcode 3150, as I ordered last night and my credit card has been charged already….

      the status is "printed"

      thanks

      • how long is a piece of string - just relax friend it'll get there.

      • +1

We will be processing and dispatching orders as quickly as possible. My estimation is that we will have processed and dispatched all orders that we have stock on hand for by tomorrow. Orders placed from around now may incur a delay into next week as we await our next shipment. Australia Post is generally 3-5 business days from dispatch.

        • +1

          You have been Ozbargained!

    • good work

  • Thats cheap price for a nice little camera.

  • can a friend in taiwan/hk buy cheaper than this price? i have one friend that will visit me soon

    • I hardly think so, plus, I wouldn't bother. Teds give you an Australian warranty. That worth more than the couple of bucks (if you can find one) you will save from overseas purchase.

      • ohh damn.. i want white but also tired carrying my k-x - heavy
        i will get this now.

  • Just ordered one for $189.95, opt for pick up at 317 Pitt Street Sydney. Let the wait begin

  • I just got a call saying store pickup won't be available. They said there's none left in the Pitt St store (where I chose to pick up). It'll be posted to me for free mid next week. Too bad it won't make my Melb trip next Monday but as long as it gets here before my Asia trip next month then it's all good.

Thanks by the way to Teds for chiming in with updates here on OzB :)

    • when did you place your order?

      • Maybe 15 or so mins after I posted the deal.

        • ha, interesting. I guess a city store would have lower stock in general.

        • Yeah I asked if I can get it from their Melb city store since I'll be there early next week but they said it's sold out there too. They said they're getting it from one of their regional stores.

        • there ya go then - i'll post up the results when i'm contacted as i ordered not too long after you last night and am in melbourne.

        • I was actually there yesterday at the Pitt St store, there was one on display!

    • Interesting, I called Teds online this morning, was told it would be available for pickup in Pitt St after 3pm today. I must have ordered before you based on your deal :)

      • Hope you get it! Post some thoughts on the camera if you do :)

  • +4

Looking forward now to Ted's giving us equally good deals on the lenses!

  • Ouu this is a nice find!

We were looking into this (as a play toy, not serious photography!), but back then, this was wayyyy too expensive. This price seems correct :P

    • +1

Yeah I remember seeing the original price and thought to myself "what are they thinking?" I was somewhat curious when the price was just under $400 but still not enough for me to buy. This price is just right for me.

I'm kinda hoping they don't come out with some good deals on lenses cos I think I'll snap those up too :p That fisheye lens looks like a lot of fun.

      • Kudos bargainjargon

      • The toy lenses are fixed aperture and manual focus only so I'm hoping they'll release more prime lenses. But doubt it as the system seems dead. Hence the fire sale.

        • Yeah that's what I'm thinking too. I'm a fast prime kinda guy though so even just the lens included in this would last me a while.

Or at least, until the next bargain camera comes :(

        • I don't quite understand. Isn't the Q10 a successor to the Q? How is the system dead?

  • Pentax Q + 8.5mm - ClubTed Special Save $200! 105797 1 $199.95
    Subtotal $199.95
    Shipping & Handling $0.00
    Discount (VE5OFF) -$10.00
    GST $17.27
    Grand Total $189.95

    What a steal!
Hope my order gets through though…

  • maybe op can start new topic in forum about bargain pentax q accsessories/case/lens/etc

    • +1

I might once I get my hands on it and start doing research on what else to get. I have a bunch of other cameras and lenses for those cameras so I'm mainly interested in the prime included in this deal for some discreet street shooting.

I think we should have some sort of Pentax Q thread (assuming that a lot of us have our orders fulfilled) so we can share thoughts and experiences and things. Whoever gets their Pentax Q first, please start a thread! :)

  • Was near my local store in Highpoint Vic and even though I didn't get email confirmation, it was there waiting for me. Have it in hand! Nice! Ordered last night.

According to the store sales person, some person ordered 3 last night for pick up today. Christmas pressies or just buying them to flip?

    • What? OzB users buying to flip, like all of those Lenovo ThinkPads and $9 Dell printers that ended up on eBay? Nahhhhhh… :D

      • -1

I sold my $9 Dell printer on gumgree for $50, not bad

        • Well, here's to Ozbargainers… Flippers or otherwise.

    • +1

Oooh nice! Maybe you can start a Pentax Q thread and post some thoughts/pics :)

  • Hi, guys, I'm tempted to buy this camera as a point and shoot camera given that everybody think that it's a good deal. However, someone mentioned the stock lens does not have any zoom, so what can I use it for? Sorry if it's a stupid question.

    • +1

welll you can use the camera to take photos..
if you need zoom just walk closer the the object. everyone will be happy to see this cute toy in closer distance, trust me.

    • +1

It just means you have to use your feet for zooming in and out…

      • AGreed. I actually prefer shooting with primes because they usually come with a wider aperture (better for indoor pics and low light situations) plus not being able to zoom forces me to think about my composition properly. I think if I went through all my pics, the best ones would be the ones taken with primes. It may not be for people who just want to point and shoot without thinking too much (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that) but I can say that I have way more fun when I'm out shooting with a prime lens.

  • +1

time to read some unbiased review
    http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/25/pentax-q-interchangeable-…

There's nothing impressive about the Q's performance. It's sluggish to boot and focus, and while it offers a continuous shooting mode that captures up to five frames per second, its buffer only support five continuous captures — in other words, you can capture five frames per second, but only for one second.
One of the most frustrating performance issues with the Pentax Q is the camera's absolutely pitiful battery life — worse than any cam we've used in recent memory. During one day of shooting, the 940 mAh battery lasted for fewer than two hours, allowing us to capture about 230 photos and roughly five minutes of 720p video. It's lightweight enough to carry around on a full day of touring, but if you tend to shoot more than a couple photos every few minutes, 230 stills certainly won't cut it.

    • How is that review unbiased? It reviews it comparing it to SLRs and it is based on the original price of $800. It puts little weight on the size which is the key selling point for the camera.

      • I think he meant 'objective'? Instead of the other gushing posts? Still, for $200, it's a steal and we can live with the flaws. Small camera = small battery = pitiful. :-)

    • I've heard that about the battery life. Spare batteries are supposed to be cheap though, maybe check out eBay. And they're small enough that it shouldn't be a problem carrying a few of them. I guess the battery life isn't so good because the battery is so small.

I'm kind of not a big fan of reviews from major websites. I much prefer real world user reviews and seeing what kind of pics it can take. I'm not saying Engadget's review is wrong (I haven't read the entire thing although I often find their camera reviews somewhat lacking) and I'm not exactly expecting the world from the Pentax Q. But I'm willing to have a bit of a play around with it considering the asking price.

      • I think you have to keep in mind the $190 price point. If they were reviewing this camera relative to the $190 price point, I'm sure they would have a very positive opinion…

        • Exactly. The initial price was very prohibitive but $190 is a great deal for it.

  • Me too! damn you ozbargain!

    • We really do have a love-hate relationship with ozbargain, don't we? We love being here, but hate it when we get sucked into too many bargains LOL
