Did you consider a Sony Alpha A7 III Full Frame for less? ($1520 via JB and cashback)

    • I already have an A7III. Was actually considering the A7C II as an upgrade to the A7III but I think I don't use it near enough to justify the extra investment on a FF.

      • I'm in the same boat, but I want to move towards FF and Sony Alpha A7C II is $2350.. getting closer to my trigger point :)

    • +1

I just can't comprehend why would someone need 6700 when full frame A7iii costs less than that. Sure, there are a few differences but surely they're not worthy enough for splurging another 1600$ (unless of course you won the lottery yesterday and got nothing else to spend the money on)

      • +8

The A6700 is a lot more compact than the A7 III. APS-C lenses are much smaller too. So if you don't need nice bokeh or greater subject separation or better low-light, the A6700 would be better, especially when travelling.

        • +1

Autofocus is a lot more advanced in the A6700 than the A7iii. Some wildlife shooters are using the A6700 for wildlife for the better autofocus, extra reach from the crop and no loss in MP count.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: as a wildlife photographer: idk about all that but the weight difference is a reason for sure.

        • The video quality is also vastly superior on the A6700. More dynamic range, more colour depth, more framerates.

      • +2

I had an A6600 at one point and I found myself reaching for the A6600 more than the A7III due to the form factor and weight.

  • any particular reason why you wanted to move from a A7 III to A6700? From what I understand they are pretty similar except in agr and video?

    • +2

Maybe autofocus and also want to take advantage of crop factor?

    • +7

Cheaper lens, more portable, way better AF, better for wildlife

    • +2

a6700 absolutely destroys the a7iii for everyone except those looking for a camera with very specific specifications… namely low light. For everything else, the a6700 is just a better camera.

      • namely low light.

And the increased subject separation that fast FF lenses will give you.

      • -4

        Wow.. a lot of misconceptions.
        Why would you buy a full frame over mobile phone camera;

        1) Low light performance
        2) Higher dynamic range (not fake HDR)
        3) Subject seperation (not fake Bokeh)
        4) Image quality/ details

In all above areas, A7iii full frame sensor destroys APSC sensor in 6700.

For anything else (faster shutter, portability etc) then I might as well use my mobile phone.

Basically, you need a good flagship mobile phone and a full frame camera. Anything in between (such as 6700) are becoming obsolete.

For you, sure. But different people use their cameras differently. If you're travelling or going on a multi-day hike, a lighter camera and lens setup would be preferable. If you're sitting in a studio or just taking photos at an event, weight is less of a concern. So it really depends on what you're doing with the camera.

In all above areas, A7iii full frame sensor destroys APSC sensor in 6700.

Likewise, in all the above areas, an APS-C sensor destroys a phone sensor by a far, far larger margin than APS-C vs FF.

          • +3

@eug: Yup 3 stops of dynamic range between iPhone and apsc vs slightly over half a stop between apsc and full frame

            https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm

Not to mention the much cheaper and lighter lens for apsc

If you’re going to go into high end full frame lens might as well get a nicer camera like the 7R5/7M4, considering if you can afford the nicer lens that destroy apsc lens you’d be able to afford the better cameras.

        • Basically, you need a good flagship mobile phone and a full frame camera. Anything in between (such as 6700) are becoming obsolete

Ricoh GR tho, pocketable camera with an APS-C.

          1. The lens is sharp and has amazing rendering.
          2. 40mm focal length my beloved
          3. Film sim is better than Fuji
          4. Latest HDF is more exy, but well worth it. Built-in ND filter is useless anyway.
        • Factoring in sport, wildlife, landscape, documentary, journalist, travel, and video which there are options in between that work great.

RED V-RAPTOR XL or the KOMODO S35 global shutter sensor come to mind..

Lots of other factors than just size.

Heat dissipation, dynamic range, power consumption, readout speed, noise and rolling shutter, sensor design and architecture.

Then there's factors like robustness, tech, function, connectivity, size, weight, weather resistance etc.

      • For most people asking for camera recommendations, the answer I give them is to use your phone, or to get a phone with a better camera.

For those that want to get a camera, I would ask them what they want to shoot with it because what camera/lens combination I would recommend varies a lot.

        • Since you are offering, I have an IPhone 14 Pro Max and have been doing a lot of vertical videos and stills of food/closeups with it. I also record a lot of landscape video/stills when travelling with my GoPro Hero Black 8. I have been looking at the ZV-EV 1 or the Canon R50, is there anything you can recommend?

          • @balu: Haha. I don't take much video unfortunately but if you're finding your current set up lacking in something (e.g. image quality) and you have the money and time to invest in a new system then go for it!

            • @dust: Thanks - just got sick of watching online videos and not feeling confident where to put my money. I feel like there isn’t enough in the sensor, particularly in low light/indoor with it. In post I can’t seem to get it where I would like, I wish there was a service where I could use a camera for a week before buying.

          • @balu: The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 was game changer for me when I travelled to Japan. The small form factor, gimbal and instant on with the flick of the screen made shooting videos while travelling extremely easy and enjoyable for me. Works great either landscape or vertical videos.

    • On top of everything already said, this camera also has better video features, including being able to be used as a webcam without additional software/drivers.

If you use out of camera JPEGs it seems that Sony also revised its colours to be much more pleasing from end of 2022 onwards (this camera was released in 2023).

This camera and the 70-350mm lens have been so good for a light wildlife walking around combo. Jelly about this price though

  • +2

Bought this last year before my europe trip and added a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 for walk around. It was such a great little camera.

I am heading to Costa Rica and USA early next year and currently shopping around for a new zoom lens. Interested to know what others have bought.

I have seen the 70-350 recommended along with some success with the tamron 18-300 and the tamron 28-200. Alot of reviews suggest the 18-300 struggles being a cheaper lens with large zoom.

Unsure what to do! Please help black friday sales to make it easier!

    • Why not a fixed prime lens? Cheaper, photos will look great, and consistent. It's quieter in operation, smaller.

      • I am hoping to have some zoom capabilities to capture some wildlife on this trip.

    • +1

That's great to hear. I just bought the Sigma 18-50mm to pair with the A6700 for my travel at the end of the year.
I have the Tamron 28-200 for my A7III which I think it's a pretty good telephoto lens.

    • +1

I have the A6500 and have been using the older 16-70 F4 and Tamron 11-20mm for travel exclusively. The camera has been with me to over 7 continents and the photos it produces is fantastic.

I do have a prime or two but rarely take them out on trips anymore. I found them too restrictive to get those special travel shots where things are continuously dynamic. I'm the photographer and the lens works for me, not the other way round.

There is the Tamron 17-70 if you're interested. Personally, I prioritize weight and size and haven't had any need to go up to full frame.

  • JBHIFI is doing a 15% off for Sony Lenses & Camera Accessories when purchased with a Sony Mirrorless camera!

Do they a price match with the Lenses and Camera Accesories at Sony?

    • Yes, you can price match lenses and camera accesorries at Sony Australia

  • I have an almost 10-year-old A6000 paired with a Sigma 18-50mm lens. Will there be a huge improvement if I upgrade to this A6700? I understand AF and ISO are much better but I mainly shoot when traveling and some portraits.

    • +1

I'm going to say probably not. If you're shooting at relatively low ISOs and you're not shooting something fast moving (sports, animals), I don't believe you'll notice a significant image quality improvement to justify the cost.

  • I was contemplating between A7C ii and XH2 for this black friday.. ended up getting A7C II. hopefully i made the right choice!

    • Where did you buy from?

      • +1

From Sony with the price match and extra battery!

  • Can we pay with multiple ultimate gift card ?

  • Love my 6700. And this is a great price.

  • So does anyone have any thoughts on the A6400 at $1,189.15 with the kit lens vs the A6700?

I'm considering picking up a relatively compact camera for a trip to Japan in a few months, and I'm thinking mostly street/environment photography with 0-2 subjects and maybe the occasional video. Aside from any included kit lenses, I'm thinking maybe taking only one or two lenses and just learning how to best use them in a variety of situations, possibly one of the seemingly popular TTArtisan 25mm F2 or 7artisans 25mm F1.8 lenses and something else.

From what I've researched, the A6700 benefits from a newer sensor, IBIS, "AI" autofocus and more/better tracking options, a wider array of video formats, larger batteries, the flip-out display being less cumbersome than the flip-up display on the A6400, and an updated UI that's less cumbersome in addition to a revamped button/dial layout. Downsides: I've heard reports the camera can get hot, especially in video mode, and no pop-up flash from some older A6000 series models.

The A6400 is cheaper and retains the pop-up flash. Downsides: the flip-up screen is blocks by anything mounted to the hot shoe without an extender/adapter plate, the battery is the older type that is smaller and therefore does not last as long, and generally just the inverse of the pros above.

I'm wondering if it's worth the expense of jumping straight into what probably ends up being around $2k for an A6700 setup, or worth the effort of hunting around for potentially a used A6400 and getting a setup there that's (hopefully) more like ~$1.2k or maybe a bit more…

    • +1

Just to note both the TTArtisan 25mm F2 and 7artisans 25mm F1.8 are manual focus.

So either of those won't benefit from the AF from either camera.

I'd recommend a lens with AF and some type of weather sealing for travel to make life easier on the go.

Also the A6400 does not have In-body Stabilization. For Travel I would want at least a lens with OIS which are usually more expensive than lenses without, or a camera with In-body Stabilization.

A pretty big difference in video functionality between the two if video is important to you. Handheld footage from the A6400 without any stabilisation will be shaky/ jittery.

4.5 year gap between the two.. I think of resale value.

I was in a similar position when I was planning for my trip to Japan in April this year. In the end, I went with my old A6000 paired with the Sony 20mm f2.8 pancake lens (https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/camera-lenses/sel20f28), Samsung S24+ and the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 packed comfortably in an Alpaka Go Sling. I found myself using the S24+ for photos and the DJI OP3 for videos all the time. For my use case, this was the best combo. The phone was in my left pocket while the DJI OP3 and A6000 sat in the sling in front of my body. When it was time to capture something, I can easily reached for my phone with my left hand and simultaneously pull out the DJI OP3 with my right hand from the sling. I wanted to capture photos and videos at the same time regardless of the situation I was in - capturing the moment was more important for me than getting all the settings correct for a "pro" shot. It was quite cumbersome to do that with the A6000 (any mirrorless camera, really) AND shoot with the OP3. After a couple of days, I left the A6000 in the hotel for the rest of the trip.

If you're certain on your use case, I reckon that'll help make a decision for you.
Also, I'm not sure how far "in a few months" is for you but you can factor in claiming TRS with either of the A6400 or A6700 purchase if you're within 60 days of departure: https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/touris…

I'll be claiming TRS for my A6700 purchase which brings it down to $1,531.05.

      • +1

Thanks! I've got a Pixel 8 Pro, but nothing like the OP3.

My thinking was I'd likely rely on my P8P for the typical quick-fire photos and videos. The camera would then be used for more deliberate shots where I'm happy taking a few moments to consider exactly what I want to capture and how. Hardly a good way to justify dropping potentially more than a couple grand on kit.

That's why I was thinking maybe something more along the lines of an A6100 or A6400 if I could get one relatively cheaply. As a novice, I'm unlikely to come anywhere close to making good use of the capability of something even more powerful like an A6700, but I suppose if the price is right…

If I may ask, what is it about the A6700 that enticed you? Given you left the A6000 behind for most of your trip, I assume it's not for travel? Granted there's a fairly significant increase in capability with an A6700.

Good reminder on TRS - I'm just outside the window right now so I'd need to wait about another week and a half (heading over just before Feb for four weeks).

        • +1

Can't go wrong with the P8P for casual shots/videos.

I had an A6600 and A7III at one stage and found myself going for the A6600 more due to the size and weight. But for some reason, I sold the A6600 and kept the A7III because you know, it's FF… But I kinda miss the the small form factor of the A6xxx series. I bought a beat up A6000 as a grab and go and to use as a webcam through a cam link capture card.

I was tossing between the A7C II and A6700 but I couldn't justify the extra cost on the A7C II for my use case. No one will notice if it's a FF or APS-C in the content I create.

But the real reason is, there is a BF deal and I like gadgets. LOL.

          • @frozze:

But the real reason is, there is a BF deal and I like gadgets. LOL.

I know this feeling all too well.

I suppose in the absolute worst case, a lightly used A6700 isn't going to lose all that much value should I decide it's superfluous to my needs. At least in terms of TRS, I've got a few days to consider my options.

            Thanks for your insights!

Just picked this up from Sony for $1599 + free battery.

The guy at JB was willing to do $1599 but not the free battery, so he put it in a writing for me, then I called Sony, and after a 45min f#ck around on the phone and replying to an email with an image of the quote, they reluctantly price matched.

Sony Customer Support are genuinely horrible to deal with.

    • Great work.
