Just be aware that points are rarely worth buying directly from an airline. The only instance where this is worth doing is if you're quite close to a redemption that is available and you need to immediately top up to buy the redemption flight. Even with 35% bonus points they're still very overpriced for what they are.

For those who find themselves in the situation above where they're close to having enough points to buy an available flight, go for it … but I highly recommend people don't go and buy points to let them fester in their account because the airline is offering a 35% bonus.

it's 1.5c per point slightly cheaper than ozbargain, so how is it not worth it?

      • Unless I'm missing something, the first page of Classified results for Velocity points are all selling them for less than 1.5c per point?

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/velocity%20type%3Ac…

      • How do you get 1.5c per point, prices I saw were almost 2c per point.

        • 250k points

          • @sunnyc: Not a bad price if you can find award seats on ANA from SYD to HND. 78K one way in J = $1170 + taxes

            • @bruceclipse: Average redemption value though imo, that's an often heavily discounted route. You'd be paying around $2500 return for the points and taxes when you can actually get a revenue ticket for $2700-2800 and you'll be earning decent miles and status to a program of your choosing.

  • Hard sell. The only airline points worth buying are AA, UA, LifeMiles, Aeroplan, and Virgin Atlantic if you can buy them close enough to the their true value.

Might want to rethink any UA point purchases, as they have just instantly devalued partner rewards on top of dynamic pricing for their own seats. Loyalty Lobby has more details (among others). I wouldn't touch LifeMiles either TBH.

      • With LM you just gotta know what you are doing/ how to look for award seats. Not that difficult to find J seats on Thai to BKK really.

Usual reminder that purchases through points.com (which this is) will attract international transaction fees even if in AUD.

And does not trigger Amex Plat 5X points bonus!

  • Hi does anyone know if the points bought be used to transfer to another frequent flyer program? TIA

    • +1

Yes, you can transfer Velocity points to KrisFlyer (For Singapore Airlines). I did this a few days ago. I believe 1.55 Velocity points transfers to 1 KrisFlyer point.

  • Thanks so much!
