    I'll be honest and this is a hard pill to swallow for some.

    this phone is about 70% as good as an $800 phone.

    for 17% the cost. Other than low light photography (which can somewhat help with gcam)

    the phone is fast, has great battery life, nice smooth display and runs stock android.

    downside? yeah 3 years of updates sucks…but this $180 lol

      Only 1 major Android OS update and since it was released a few weeks before the current latest Android OS, that means it will only get that OS and that's it. Rest would be security updates.

      Screen isn't as good as IPS used in past flagship phones (as current flagship phones all moved to OLED). The main issue with IPS, contrast shift, is higher than normal (this is expected, a good screen costs money). 1T1R WiFi is disappointing, you could find its WiFi performance being inferior than even super dated iPhone SE1 in areas where signal is weak or 5GHz WiFi band is not reaching. Video hardware decoding is subpar in today's standard. That CPU/GPU didn't even bother supporting H.265 hardware decoding (so you can forget about AV1 hardware decoding support). MediaTek really needs to stop cutting so much (because most customers don't look at the specs in detail). Snapdragon 400 series CPUs don't cut these WiFi essentials and basic decoding to the bone like that.

      Good value for money, yes, but you still get what you paid for.

        My brother in Christ I paid $150 for this phone and I don't think I'd find something equal or better for even $250.

        Absolute banger of a phone and I'm tempted to buy more as backups, it really is good.

        And the chop-to-torch feature is worth $50 on its own; best in slot phone torch technology.

          Chop to torch is gimmicky. I cannot get it to work consistently (both speed and the amount of force matter). My point is more about Android makers really need to stop cutting some of the corners. Why WiFi 5 with 1T1R? How much is that really saving? $2?

          The IPS screen is subpar. For a 120Hz screen, when you scroll slowly reading through a Web site, the text (especially smaller text) kinda have a bit of a contrast shift (so it looks a bit like a jittery movement). I think it has something to do with the panel. Anyway, I checked against other 120Hz displays and it just doesn't feel quite right for a 120Hz display. 120Hz display is meant to give you buttery smooth experience when you scroll.

          Using the default camera app, just move around. The slow image processor means it doesn't look smooth at all on a 120Hz refresh screen.

          Don't get me wrong, it is good value for money as I mentioned.

      downside? Motorola support sucks. From my experience with one of their phones died after one year and Motorola support was adamant about 12 months support. Threat of ACCC and Australia Consumer Law didn't help. Reported ACCC anyway but who cares about legal action against a <$300 phone. Genuinely curious if that is how Motorola roll in Au or just unlucky me!

        yeah can't argue there. one positive at least is they allow you to factory reset from recovery (looking at you, HMD/Nokia) and provide the end users a tool to completely reimage the phone with the current software update. (also looking at you, HMD/Nokia)

            @AdrianW: Yeah, there's a dual physical sim and a physical sim + esim version of this phone depending on region. We have the one with esim here if it's AU stock (thankfully!).

            I specifically want the esim as mine will be used as a back up phone when traveling.

            This phone is so light… great for the minimalist traveller who only has 7kg carry on.

    Anyone had charging issues with a Motorola? My edge 30 twice now says 'connected, not charging' or says fully charged at 90%.
    Only fix I have found is to charge via my tablet, nothing else works. From 90-100% I have to plug and unplug every 10-20secs. Then once at 100% it's fine again.

      Did you check to see if Battery/Charging Optimisation is turned on in the settings?

      If it's not turned on, you might have to recalibrate the battery

        Tried everything like that. No luck. Using the tablet as the power source was the only solution, laptop didn't even do it. Weird I know.

          Are you using original cable and original charger? If not, use them first.

          I did a test with various cables (and using the original charger) a while back, using an USB-C meter to inspect, I found multiple 3rd party cables are inferior and at times won't charge properly. The actual voltage and current are also slightly different. Even USB-IF certified 3rd party cables can be dodgy. Powerbanks can also have charging issues, especially on devices which require really low current or voltage when it is charged above 85%. I do have the issue you reported when charging Xiaomi watches with cheap powerbanks (it just won't charge after 85%).

          Battery/Charging Optimisation can also cause the phone to suspend charging (because constantly micro charging the phone from 99% to 100% is bad for the battery). Tablet's USB-C port could likely not to carry too much current and that might cause the phone to think it needs to allow that type of charging (as it feels it is a weaker power source).

      Screen on G54 is LCD, G84 has an OLED. This only matters if you care about whether blacks are truly black as opposed to dark grey. If you tend to watch videos on public transport in bright conditions, this won't matter. If you're a cinephile and frequently watch movies in dark environments, it will.

      The Australian variants of both are the higher end ones. The G54 is available in 4GB, 8 and 12GB RAM, but most sold in Australia are the 8GB variant. Similar story for the G84, but with 12GB.

      G84 doesn't have eSIM support despite being the higher end phone. Not sure why.

      G84 has better charging speed. 30 watts vs 15 on the G54. 30 is about average/mediocre by today's standards. 15 is awful, but if your previous phone had even slower charging, you won't mind too much.

      The CPUs used for both phones have the same core configuration (2 x a78 large cores and 6 x a55 small cores), but the Mediatek Dimensity 7020 is clocked higher, while the Snapdragon 695 benefits from Qualcomm's better relationships and ecosystem maturity that may result in better optimisation. So it's possible that the higher clocks on the Dimensity and better optimisations on the Snapdragon end up cancelling each other out.

        Also, Qualcomm does the WiFi part properly. It is 2x2. If you have faster NBN, you want your device to support 2x2, but if you have 50/20 and don't give a damn about fast download then 1x1 will do. 1x1 is normally used for smart switches/plugs and globes where they don't need much data.

        H.265 hardware decoding support is supported (too lazy to check whether encoding is also hardware accelerated). The GPU isn't as crippled as much like Dimensity 7020.

            Anyway, a phone can be quite handy to find good spots to put a PC or console to get good WiFi speed. Another thing is that new flagship phones tend to get latest WiFi tech (i.e. WiFi 6E, WiFi 7). Put it this way, my Android phone from 2021 has WiFi 6E support. That was one of the reasons for me to upgrade a few PCs to WiFi 6E.

            A friend has fast NBN, when he found his desktop getting slower speed test than his iPhone, it prompted him to investigate and fix the issue on his desktop. It now gets the same speed test result as his iPhone (he moved the desktop to a slightly different location).

          G54 seems to have issue with Chrome's GPU Rastering, had the issue myself as well as a couple others here and on whirlpool. Disabled it in the flags and so far so good.

          El cheapo GPU is el cheapo after all. But I don't really see a point in the price premium for the G84.

      I bought both, G54 at $149 and G84 for $250. I bought both for my parents. The G84 is much nicer. I own an S23 Ultra for reference.

      The screen is much nicer on the G84, no contest. Unless you suffer from headaches and eyestrain from OLED screens, go for the G84. The screen barely looks much different from my S23U, the 84 looks just a tad more oversaturated. The 84 is also visible in direct sunlight and on an overcast day. It's more than twice the brightness of the 54.

      The camera is also much better on the G84, and you get an ultrawide camera to go with it while the 54 has a macro camera.

      The 84 also looks slightly nicer with more symmetrical bezels at the front. Both otherwise feel almost identical if you get the indigo blue variant of the 54 with the faux leather back.

      84 also has a higher base storage variant and more ram. I found the 54 a little bit warmer during setup, and I noticed a few more dropped frames than the 84. The 84 feels bit more responsive, especially when opening the camera.

      The 84 is a nicer phone over the 54, but I would only get it if it's <$100 more. If you don't mind chinese phones with questionable warranty, the Redmi Note 13 pro looks really good and can be had for around $300 on aliexpress.

        SCREEN: G54 vs G84. Some people look at them & say 'eh'…much of a muchness: value $10 more for G84. Others may go 'wow' & value $100 more.
        It's subjective & personal-preference.

        I encourage people to see it for THEMSELVES.

          Absolutely, I guess it depends on what you're looking at. If you use dark mode a lot, OLED will always look better. For me, being able to see my display in essentially all lighting situations is worth the cost difference.

          OLED is often better in extreme low light and in high brightness situations. Obviously if you get the migraines or eye strain from PWM flicker, avoid OLED.
          Burn-in is also a limitation of OLED technology, but if you use the screens in a reasonable manner (not always at 100% brightness, turning the screen off when not in use, not having static images on all the time), then it's mainly a non-issue.

      I got this phone on the JB-HiFi deal.
      We are in Autumn and the sun is quite low but we had a bright cloudless day last week and outside the screen was unreadable. However, the reviews said that the screen brightness was a con for this phone so I got what I expected.
      At all other times outside since then I have not had a problem.
      For my $149 I got 8GB/128GB storage, faster processor, OIS on the camera, NFC and esim (which I don't know if I'll ever need to use) so I can live with the poor screen brightness.

    Beware of dodgy Motorola Support who try to avoid warranty claims if it dies after 12 months. If you are hoping for a 24 months warranty perios, just like other phones, try to get that written up somewhere. I had to RIP a Moto G cr*p phone because it died just after 12 months, a few years ago. be warned.

      It have the option, but seeing this probably have the cheapest of the cheap flash storage, its better not to use it as swap.

      Virtual ram is only usable on devices with proper ssd storage.

    Does anyone have a recommendation for a screen protector? S20FE protectors fit. Wasn't impressed with zuslabs one on eBay - scratches easily, despite apparently being 9H.
