  • Just to mention, these new models now come with built in HomeShield which, without the paid subscription, isn’t as powerful as previous non-homeshield parental controls were. However, if you get the paid subscription, you will be good.

Not a bargain, been cheaper than this

    • +8

A bargain does not mean it needs to be the lowest price ever, if it is a significant saving from the RRP or beats competitor pricings, it qualifies as a bargain

Take a seat, and let me introduce you to inflation…

      A bargain infers it's a 'good price' now…

      cheaper is a historical reflection.

Bitcoin can be a bargain at $30k but of course it was cheaper at $1k…

No need to punch down, this is a community and folks like OP are just trying to share a potential saving with others…the only THEM are those selling, the US is everyone here happy to help and share with you (at no cost I might add).

  • I recently moved and through the process I ended up getting a Netcomm router which is connected to the Tenda mesh devices via ethernet. Generally speaking this has been working but every now and then the Tenda will drop out while the Netcomm network is still working. Not sure what is causing this but thinking maybe it is time for an upgrade.

Now for the noob question because IT things like this are a mysterious black box to me:

I have HFC in my building and an NBN box in my unit. If I was to buy this, would it replace the Netcomm router directly? Or would it still need to be routed through a router (acting as a modem) and then into the Deco? Previously I had FTTN and I needed to set my router to modem only mode before routing into the Tenda mesh system. Not sure what is different compared to HFC.

Generally speaking would this be relatively easy to set up using my ISP details?

In short - yes. It'll replace your Netcomm but you will lose your home phone and if you're using TPG or similar, you might have some fun configuring the VLANs on the Deco. They work really well. You can't replace the HFC or buy a system with them built in.

      • No home phone here and I am with Tangerine.

So from the sounds of it it should be relatively simple to transition to the Deco? Anything that might trip me up? Honestly my current set up is the product of trial and error and I actually don't know why it is working because I thought I did something I wasn't supposed to do. I want to avoid that situation if I can…

    • You can set up the nodes as access points and leave the Netcomm to handle the routing.

      • So could I place all three units away from the router? Or would I still need one plugged directly into the router?

        • +1

To use the TP-Link Deco's as Wi-Fi access points you plugin one of them to the NetComm router. There is no benefit using the NetComm as your router and the TP-Link Deco's as Wi-Fi access points on HFC.

The nbn NTD box for HFC is a cable modem. Plugin one TP-Link Deco router to the nbn NTD box. During setup select PPPoE for your internet type and enter your Tangerine username and password.

@Twix: Okay great, thanks for this. Sounds like I bought the NetComm router for no reason when I moved and could have just used the Tenda system instead. Oh well.

Sounds like a pretty simple set up that I can manage.

            I appreciate the help.

Hey mate . Please PM directly . However let’s get more info .
How big is the place ? How many levels?
With this unit you should be able to cover a decent 2 level house.
Note- you will need to download the App and use that to configure the device(simple setup)

So in your case the NBN device acts as a modem . You can have one of these connected to that and rest 2 placed around the rouse

    • I assume this was for me (I've used the wrong message box before…).

My place is a single level 3 bedroom unit in a concrete/brick building. My Tenda mesh system (MW6
maybe) does a pretty good job covering the place but outside is a bit patchy even with the units up against the window and it would be nice if it was more stable outside. Also where I work from home is at the opposite end of the unit from where the HFC cable enters the unit so the mesh is very important to get stable internet for work. That said, if it wasn't for the drops, I probably wouldn't upgrade.

If it's as simple as you say, that's great and it might be time to upgrade.

reach out directly if u have any questions or concerns when setting up.
Better to shout when in doubt.

        • Much appreciated. I may just do that if I struggle!

  • just want to add in that the settings are pretty locked down on these (e.g. cant choose your channel number)

Are these easy to set up? My router just gave up and I'm not very savy with router settings.

    • +1

      Took me roughly 10 minutes.

The most time consuming task for me was to choose my new ssid name

"Tell my WiFi I love her"

Haha! My wife will get jelous if i name it that.
Cheers for the advice and deal post. I reckon i'll be purchasing.
