There's a forever question of Mitsubshi Electric vs Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Everyone seems to say MHI, but I read the other week that they have a pretty strong cashback program for installers which may sway it. Any installers have a preference?

    • +8

I am not an installer, nor have I ever used Mitsubishi Electric, but I recently installed a couple of reverse-cycle MHI systems in my home, and they are excellent. Energy consumption-wise, they are very efficient, and I can finally get rid of gas heating and avoid gas bill shocks. I am not trying to convince anyone here to get MHI; I'm merely sharing my experience.

      • +5

Similar experience here. We absolutely love ours. If they are more competitively priced and can (potentially) do a better job then it's an easy choice.

All-electric-home convert chiming in, was waiting for this promo to kick in again this year to get a few more splits installed in our place after getting a few in last year. Got a 2.5kw Avanti and Ciara installed in two bedrooms and love both.

        • Hi @Easy Money, how is Avanti compared against Ciara?

I am keen to get Ciara because it has built in wifi for similar price, but I haven't found much review for Ciara and most people seem to go to Avanti or Avanti Plus.

          • @FashionLane99PetShop: Personal usage, i don't see any real difference between then in normal operation- specifications say the Avanti should be more efficient though. I went with a Ciara only as i needed Wifi functionality(and didn't want to buy a wifi module(which was roughly $250 extra at the time). Overall happy with both and looking through the features and modes both unit have, its practically the same. Woulhdn't hesitate to grab another one of either - though will probably lean on the Ciara as I can then control remotely as well.

            • @Easy Money: Thanks for sharing your experience. I might get a few Ciara as well. Cheers.

              • @FashionLane99PetShop: I looked up the official ratings between the two ranges and(for the 2.5kw model) it's about a 10% decrease in efficiency going from the Avanti to the Ciara(efficiency rating is still in the mid-4s so it's still very respectable).
Depending on your usage this might not be too significant to outweigh the benefits of the Ciara, namely size and built in Wifi). This makes me lean further to the Ciara as we don't frequently have the air conditioning running for hours on end so any savings from running costs will take a long while to beat the upfront cost of the wifi adaptor on the Avanti-and even more so as we primarily use it during solar hours.

EDIT: rough maths on the payback of the energy savings vs upfront wifi adaptor cost for my use case puts it at about 6.5 years of daily usage(4 hours a day). In reality, it will definitely be much more as we only use it at most 3 or 4 times a week on average and it's not on for very long each time so the compressor will not run for the full 4 hours, drawing full power)

      • We love ours too although we've kept our gas ducted heating as it's so much nicer having heat come up from the floor rather than from the (almost) ceiling mounted reverse cycle's (Avanti's). Definitely can recommended the MHI Avanti units (have had since beginning (around 3rd) of January this year).

I’ve installed hundreds of splits and they’re pretty much all the same to put in. Cheapo ones have flimsy wall brackets but the rest is much the same and they all come with 5 year warranty’s. Only one I’d avoid is Daikin. If you blow a PCB in the indoor or outdoor unit and it’s out of warranty…LOOK OUT.

      • I've had a Daikin PCB fail within 5 years. It was on the cusp of warranty, inside if counted from settlement date.

Apparently it's really common I.e. Engineered to fail. And it was ****ing expensive to replace, I think $2k+. I had no choice as it was part of an apt block. That's probably how they do it, just tender dirt cheap for offplan builds then wait for the failures to generate an income stream.

      • Looking to install ducted, do you have any advice? Offered Daikin VS Samsung, quite a difference of at least 2.5k

        • +1

I would avoid daikin but up to you.

I've had Mitsubishi Electric split systems installed at my old house and new place. Both times got multihead units running off a single inverter. At the old house we had the street power lines hit by lightning and the inverter PCB got fried. Was insured and could be fixed easily.

Happy with the wifi app as it works pretty well and has home assistant support via a 3rd party integration.

We've always gone for the top of the range with plasma filter and dual vanes.
Main thing is to get a good installer. We've had a good company but inexperienced employees. First time the drainage backflowed and flooded the house. Second time they installed a dodgy isolator switch which was pretty much DOA and we had to get Mitsubishi out as the installer suggested it was a warranty issue. Got sorted in the end, company at least was good about it and helpful but ultimately beyond their skillset to diagnose. Installers are NOT repairers or technicians all the time as was the case with our mob

      • Did you get the MH-AC-WIFI-1 module? I am watching for a price drop on the Broadlink RM4 Pro S and plan to integrate it with Home Assistant via SmartIR.

        • +1

Mine is top of the range so wifi is built in.
I did have one of the old wifi modules added at my old house and that works fine. Used a RM mini black bean with others and that worked too.

          • @0 0 0:

Mine is top of the range so wifi is built in.

Isn't only Ciara has built in wifi which is the entry level one ?

edit: ah ME not MHI :D

        • I have this, and frankly, it's kinda crap. it mostly sort of works, but the app involved (intesis AC cloud) is the buggiest piece of crap ever- crashes constantly- and has never been fixed in the last 6 years. honestly, I'd probably use sensibo instead.

    • latest choice reviews have Daiken, MHI and LG in the “recommended”. ME doesn’t turn up in the list.
but what do I know, just ordered Hisense as heaps cheaper.
my previous Daikan ran for 23 years with just one clean. on its last legs though

      • +1

Haha I was gonna point this out.

  • Can this be paired with the VEU rebate program?

    • Id like to know this too - Want a multi-split to replace gas ducted

    • I tried, but I gave up because I couldn't convince the suppliers I reached out to to quote me for MHI. Everyone was sending me quotes for their own brand air conditioners that I had never heard of. A good friend of mine installed units under VEU rebate program and he regrets his decision, mainly because they are not as efficient.

      • +1

you can get MHI under VEU, I got 3 MHI (2 Avanti Plus 2.5 kW and large 6.3 kW Bronte). I wish I would have got this cash back with it though, looks like I could have got $500 from this deal as $150*2 + $200

Avanti Plus is the most efficient RCAC in current market as I know, I use it for heating a lot, but power consumption is low

        • +3

Are you in Victoria? Which provider did you go with to get the Mitsubishi heavy industries I’ve just had a massive rant to the Victorian government scheme/scam hotline. He told me that half of the people on the website don’t even provide the service they are just a middleman. I said to him surely a bureaucrat could spend some time to go through the website ring every company rather than me doing it and find out who provides what and what products they will supply. I told him I want Mitsubishi heavy industries but the problem is most people are gonna try and peddling cheap Chinese crap that isn’t even energy-efficient when the whole idea of this game is to provide energy efficiency. If anyone has the time I said suggest you send an email complaining about this problem and get someone to get off their arse and simplify it and make it easier for the public. How is someone in their 90s or with dementia supposed to wade through all this crap. It’s the equivalent of the people going door-to-door installing crappy lightbulbs or solar panels that don’t work properly. The amount of money is wasted. Does my head in he is the email if you feel like going in a rant like I just did😀

@bennybaubles: I haven't done any paper work my self. I got mine supplied and installed by a company, and I only paid excess after all rebates to them. Easy peasy!

I used https://www.wantasparky.com.au/ which is kinda local company, they did the heat pump as well.

            • +1

              @bazingaa: Thank you

            • @bazingaa: Which heat pump and how much? I'm in the market for one but a bit hesitant because what do we do when they fail in 7 years or so?

              • @TEER3X: I save $2.6 per day (previous cost per day for gas) as I am running this on free electricity windows on OVO plan, it was around $1400 and payback time is less than 2 years. It has 5 years warranty anyway, so financially there is no issue.

                • @bazingaa: How does the occo compare with other plans? Is it worth getting the 3 free hours compared to the cheapest rate?

          • @bennybaubles: If it's anywhere near you, we're in Carrum Downs and had a great installation experience - Thermochill - https://thermochillheating.com/

Should have mentioned that we had 3 MHI Avanti units installed.

        • If you are happy with the install and service, and wouldn't mind sharing the installer/provider details that would be much appreciated. TIA.

          • +2

@ClioB: I used https://www.wantasparky.com.au/ which is kinda local company, they did the heat pump as well. The work is perfect in my opinion. I got most of rebates for Bronte as I swapped from a gas wall furnace. other 2 were new installation.

            • +1

@bazingaa: Thanks for that, I'll be in touch with them.
Out of curiosity, which heat pump did you install with them? That's also on my to-do list.

              • +1

@ClioB: Aquatech RAPID/X6 210l, kind of mid range one (5 yr warranty for all parts) which is TUYA compatible and I use it with Home Assistant. I run it during OVO 3 hour free electricity window and get free hot water now.

    • cash rebate for household installation?

  • Just chose a couple of Hisense ac because they were $500 cheaper overall than MHI. Sigh.

    • +3

it's never worth choosing a crappier AC brand, as the installation costs are the same whatever you buy

      • +1

just looked at the eligible units. overall would save me $1450!
I might check with the installer to see if he has actually purchased the Hisense yet.

  • +1

I'm sure tesla fans will buy this 😂

  • Any truth with cashbacks built into the price?

    • the T&C makes a big point that installers can’t try this on.

  • What would be the best one for a 2 bedroom unit with a combined dining living area please?

    • I used this with sizing and it is pretty accurate: split system room sizing chart

You can also use the Australian Institute of Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Heating’s (AIRAH) fair air website to get a better idea of the size of air conditioner you may need: fairair

Where can we find the price of the actual air con units? Like -100 to -$500 doesnt mean much if they've marked up the price 200%|

    e.g. SRK25ZSXA-W-Set SRK25ZSXA-W SRC25ZSXA-W

    • You have to call aircon places, or look online, like the rest of us

900 and 3.5 kv unit, that was there on Victorian rebate website, just call them, not sure if they have the same unit, mine is now 2 years old

    • +1

Oh! In a message a bit further up I also recommended Thermochill (I'm in Carrum Downs) - they were great.

  • Anyone able to recommend an MHI installer in Western Sydney? Looking to replace a 15 year old Fujitsu system

    • I'll pm you who I used- they were great- done 3 houses with them- (just saw you have messages switched off)

      • Sorry about that, please try again?

      • Can I have the recommendation as well please?

    • We went with E-Green Electrical. They were really helpful! I spoke with an associated named Matthew.

  • +2

Why is it win a Tesla? Shouldn't it be a Mitsubishi of some sort.

    • I think it's an old promo image.

  • Most Bunnings clearance air conditioners including MHI and Samsung are $500 from 2.5kw to 7.1kw

  • I just had one of these units installed today, reckon I would be able to make a claim?

  • If purchasing from bunnings, this still eligible right?

    • +1

Worked for me during the last promotion (December). Got the special order 2.5kW cooling model for $749 (including $100 cash back).

      • +1

I was thinking getting a pricematch and get 10% off from bunning then claim cash back 😄

  • How is the avanti series compared to Mitsubishi Electric MSZAP35VG2KIT 3.5kW Inverter Split System Air Conditioner this series?

    any experiences?

  • How does the promo work if we get a multi split system?

It looks like the promo is based on getting a set(indoor/outdoor).

So if we do a multisplit system where its ducted upstairs and a single split downstairs, it's just a single cashback?

    • The cashback page has multi-splits down the bottom. It looks like you get 1 cashback for the whole system, based off which outdoor unit you pick - and nothing for each of the heads.

      • Thats what I thought too.. Guess its too good to be true..

        • It's not too bad; the biggest multi-splits still give you 3-400 back, and the heads themselves don't look hugely expensive.

For my intended 3 head setup, I've calculated ~$300 more cashback if I go all individual systems - but I think installation would outweigh that.

    • Multi split systems are stupid.

Air conditioning specialists say don't do it.

      • From what I have researched they seem to be the better option between multi-split and ducted.

Yes, the best option would be standalone units but who wants like 4 outdoor units on the side of their house?

        • Best option is not 4 stand alone units. The best thing is ducted.

Consult an expert before you get the system.

  • They didn't honour my cashback, unit stopped cooling below 28°, no solution provided..
I'd say stay away from MHI

    • Thanks for posting this. I got 2 x 5kw units from Vermont south store

      • Which installer are you getting

  • Btw, the page is back up.

  • Nice about to buy one

  • Getting a commercial unit for the cost of a crappy rinnai unit. It's good to buy direct when you can.

  • I was quoted $5,000 for 5x split units 3x 3kw, 1x 5kw and 1x 8kw (TCL brand I believe), including installation after veu rebate in Melbourne.

What would be the approx net cost of something similar with the MHI brand?

    • seems cheap, but TCL brand.

  • How much does installation cost in Sydney and any recommendations?

Typically the aircon companies seem to already supply as well. I've seen ads for $1800 with installation for daicen or Mitsubishi for around 2.5w

  • If you're in NSW, you may be eligible for a discount through an approved supplier:
    https://www.energy.nsw.gov.au/households/rebates-grants-and-…

We contacted Ecovantage and they put us in contact with E-Green Electrical (servicing Sydney). Great service.

    • +1

how does this work? what is the discount? the website is so vague in what the scheme actually does?

    • Does anyone have access to the list of air conditioning units (Brand Model) eligible for the rebate in NSW?

  • MJC has no capacity atm btw, anyone else in Melbourne that someone has used personally?

Went to bunnings today to attempt at price beating from this website as they are the only one without any clear info about shipping. Bunnings Armadale (WA) did not want to price beat due to the lack of shipping detail but was happy to do price matching. Saved about $50 on my 2.0kW Avanti.
