Ironically, i think you missed his point. there are a lot of places where you would be buried in downvotes (and hence your "voice" silenced) if you don't start with "I love brand XXX and have this and that product from them… but <continue with opinions that are valid whether or not you love brand XXX>".

Tesla discussions tend to be one of them nowadays

          • +1

@xrailgun: No, I didn't miss his point. The point I was making, which I think both of you missed, is that I'm not downvoting the deal because I'm anti Tesla, which if you read through the comments is what about half of the downvotes are.

The only reason you're both even saying this at all is specifically because this is a Tesla thread and trying to mock Tesla owners is supposedly the trendy thing to do. If it was about a Hyundai and someone posted saying "I own the same car but I think this is a rubbish deal" you wouldn't have said anything at all despite the fact that it's exactly the same thing.

      • To be fair, this is the one time it's relevant. He's trying to increase the validity (or at least the perceived validity) of his negative vote.

    • -6

It’s a bargain compared to what you paid for your slower older car though

    • Full price can be a bargain if it's good value and plenty of people think it is.

    • But they aren’t better to drive

      • +11

        but they have indicator stalks

      • This website isn't OzBetterToDrive.

        • How it drives is pretty important to car deals surely right?

    • -3

      Plastic junk.

    • -1

tell me you have not driven each of them without tell me you have not driven each of them

      • -1

        It’s “without saying”.

Tell me without telling me makes zero sense.

    • People food is not a bargain. It's cheaper to eat dog food and grass.

      • +2

        most sane tesla discussion

      • People food at standard price, not a bargain.
People food at a discount is a bargain.
        This isn't OzFullPricedCars.com.

  • -5

Is the Model 4 out in Australia soon?

    • +1

Imagine how many features that would be lacking… It probably won't have headlights, or the ignition is somewhere in the back seat.. or the steering wheel maybe a series of buttons and not actually a wheel.

  • +19

As a happy Tesla owner, this is a rubbish post. It's a deal for here when they're discounted (like recent 3 / Y posts), not when they're launched.

    • +4

It’s $2500 cheaper than the model it replaced and significantly better so it’s got some credibility as a bargain

      • +3

It's a new and refreshed model, so references to the previous model are irrelevant, although i do agree it is significantly better.

A discount / deal is when the same model is reduced, not a new model at RRP.

        • +2

Fair call and probably technically correct
That’s why these posts are always good popcorn material

          • +2

@choofa: Agreed, they do bring the loonies out of the woodwork. I just ordered one, and even I don't think that this should be listed as a deal on Ozbargain.

            • @dtpearson: Good buy. I do think this will be the car of the year. It’s the model 3 with proper suspension and a better quality car all round. For $80k and that performance it’s going to be insanely good
              Very jealous

    Terrible brand, terrible quality car

    • -4

Terrible comment. Why did you even bother?

      • Because he supports Elon Musk and free speech.

        (Ooops… I see what I did there…)

  • Are P platers allowed to drive this? Surely not

    • +1

      Definitely not
In NSW P platers couldn’t drive the original base model 3 as it did 0-100 in under 6 seconds
They can now drive the base model since 2021 which does it in 6.1s

    • +2

Depends on the state/territory. ACT don't have P plate power restrictions as an example.

      • -5

Yeah but ACT doesn’t have rules or interesting people

        • +3

Drive a powerful car and use fireworks. Sounds good to me!

        • +1

Clearly you haven't been to or interacted with people in ACT?

          • @Nillionaire: I was just having a laugh. Had many work trips to Canberra and had some cracking nights out. Mostly with good folks from our defence forces.

  • +4

MAGA mobile with a dated 12 year old design being sold at RRP.

    • What do you mean 12 year old design? Pretty sure the Model 3 came out in 2017.

      • -2

Pretty sure the Model 3 came out in 2017.

It did. And was updated this year.
And also 'Maga mobile' makes no sense. Tesla is the darling of liberal Californians. If any vehicle is a MAGA mobile; it would be an 8 litre V8 pickup truck with a lift kit and a rifle rack on the back window. OP, like most lefties has NFI about anything…

    • dated 12 year old design

lol what? Which car do you see as having a non-dated design?

  • +14

Nice set of specs, too bad it doesn't have:

    Parking sensors that work
    Windscreen wiper controls
Blinkers that aren't capacitive touch buttons
A speedometer or HUD in your forward vision
    A physical gear selector
    360 camera

The kinda stuff that you actually want in a car after you get bored of flooring it a few times.

    • -5

But think of how cool you'll look when you're zooming away?

Who needs the rest when all the babes will come running and all the guys will be jealous of your hot rod?

    • +5

I have a new Model 3 (and had my reservations about all of the above) but far out do people carry on about these changes on every single post.

      • The car has parking sensors. Yes they're camera-based now, but yes they work.
      • It has windscreen wiper controls? I'm more annoyed by the sporadic auto-wipers it has.
      • The indicators are absolutely fine after a day with the car.
      • I actually love having no HUD in my direct vision, as I'm entirely focussed on what's in front. Glancing at the speed is a trivial exercise once your peripheral becomes used to it.
      • There's drive and reverse. How often are you selecting gears when you drive mate? It's a non-issue, and there are physical buttons up by the map lights. I've not felt the need to touch them once.
      • 360 camera exists. I don't love it, but I've never really loved them on any car.

Honestly, it's not the perfect car of all time, but the issues that people cry foul about are so tired. It's completely overblown. The car is bloody fantastic (and I'm a Musk hater).

      • +2

Stop talking sense, you are wasting your time. Just let them spout all the crap they read online, they will find out in 10 years time how much better EVs (and Teslas) are. I remember the same arguments that I had online when the iPhone came out.

        • +2

The same arguments are being recycled from 20 years ago when the Prius became popular.

'Oh! Look how many resources are required to build the battery!'
'Oh! The battery will only last a few years and then you'll need a replacement!'
'Oh! Firefighters will be electrocuted when they come out to a Prius crash!'

The same scare tactics and misinformation, over and over again, thanks to the fossil fuel industry and their sycophants. Once boomers fizzle out with their love of carburetted V8s we can finally move on.

          • @Cluster:

'Oh! Look how many resources are required to build the battery!'

It is true that EV battery require much more resources and emissions than a regular car

The battery will only last a few years and then you'll need a replacement!'

It is true that the battery will only last a few years, much less than an ICE engine

Firefighters will be electrocuted when they come out to a Prius crash!'

Battery fires are a higher risk to firefighters, and risk of electrocution is real Just ask any local firefighter (I used to work for them)

thanks to the fossil fuel industry and their sycophants.

The old iT's ThE fOsSIl FuEl InDuStRy conspiracy theory being recycled from 50 years ago…

Once boomers fizzle out with their love of carburetted V8s

Carburetters haven't been common for about 40 years, nor are V8's very common. Imagine knowing so little about the subject matter, but then claiming to be the expert.

        • they will find out in 10 years time how much better EVs (and Teslas) are

Not better at distance or carrying load… You'll find this out in less less than 10 years the first time you try to do this.

I remember the same arguments that I had online when the iPhone came out.

The iPhone had parking sensors, wipers and indicators? Interesting…

      • What's your beef with 360⁰ cameras?

        • No beef, I’ve just not grown up using them (and this is the first car I’ve owned with them).

I just don’t feel they help me any more than the reverse camera, sensors and my mirrors. Just me, though.

          • @thrillhouse: I've only had one (current) car with a reverse camera, no sensors, so a 360° camera sounds like outer space tech to me.

Nifty for when you're backing out of front in only parking spaces sandwiched in between high SUVs no? Pretty rare but those times I can't see diddly squat.

  • $79.5 k in two weeks time!

  • +1

Even the base model accelerates faster than most of petrol cars. Why 2 seconds would matter much? Especially for extra 20k.

    • Base model (RWD) is 6.1s, so this is 3 seconds faster.
      The AWD model is 4.4s.

    • almost any electric car does this

    • +4

If you're a "car person", you know 6s~ 0-100 and 3s 0-100 are worlds apart.

      • +1

I knew a couple of guys who were professional racers at Oran Park Raceway. In fact they did drive like a normal person on city roads. So I guess so-called "car person" is probably referred to immature driver.

  • +4

    I don't get it

  • Best car Tesla, thanks OP.

  • Is this Performance model or Ludicrous model?

    • Performance. But likely they will have a "boost" option for Ludicrous speed in a few months for $2.5k and it will do 0-100 in 2.5s

  • 460hp but

"There's no substitute for cubic inches."

    • +1

Nope, 1850kg. Same as the new BMW M3.

  • +4

I'm still waiting for better battery tech in cars, like solid state.

I've been waiting a while already… Only 20 more years to go, not that far away tbh.

      • -1

    • -1

  • +3

What's the normal RRP and what's the saving?

  • -3

Given what's widely known about the quality of these cars plus the cringe of the brand associated with Q-Elon, why is anybody even thinking of buying one of these in 2024?

    • +6

Had one for the last 5 years. FAR better vehicle than my parents Mercedes (C300 and GLE350). Also FAR better vehicle than my old Audi S4 and VW Golf R. Just placed an order for the new one. They are just fantastic cars, there is a reason that Tesla has the highest loyalty rate in the industry.

      • +1

With you on this one. We've had the Model S,X,3 and recently the Y. No issues with any vehicle. Still have them all.

      • FAR better vehicle than…

Better how? Range? Plasticky looking Kmart interior?

    • What quality issues with these Tesla?

    • +1

Quality issues you're referring to are specific to US manufactured ones and were the "go to insult" about 3 years ago.

99% of OzBargainers are wheelying that bike into a tree in 3.1 seconds.

  • Is there a difference between battery type (other than capacity) between Tesla models in Australia? For example, if I'm not wrong, the Model 3 base version uses LiFePO4. Does the performance model use Liion (perhaps for power density and discharge rate)?
Asking because I keep my cars for a long time and interested to know expected longevity of the battery. For example, should we expect the base model battery to last significantly longer in years since it is LiFePO4 which in general are expected to last much longer than Liion?

  • Yuck

  • I am on the market for an EV, but Tesla isn't on my list from get go. kinda says it all, doesn't it? don't really care about 0-100kph, that's not important in a car you use every day.

    • +4

Terrible decision to go EV shopping and write Tesla off before you even start.

Don't let your politics get in the way of making a good purchasing decision.

      • it isn't politics even, it's build quality, design, and interior, also future doesn't feel solid with a person like EM at the top.

        • +1

Yep. Ignoring the politics, the design and build quality is pretty shambolic.
