  • What's the general consensus on upgrading from a V6 Absolute, worth getting this model for the price/specs vs other/newer models?

      • +1

        Thank you @Buy2Much

    • +6

I did this but only because my v6 crapped out. V10 is definetly a better unit, but not $600 better. If your v6 is still working fine then i wouldnt spend the money. Best thing i like about the upgrade is the easier bin emptying.

      • +1

Always wondered about that comment - emptying doesn't seem easier to me, because in the newer models you need to remove whatever accessory you have attached to the vaccuum. But I get that most people do that anyway.

    • +2

I upgraded from the dc59 which is essentially the V6 to the gen5 detect for the 2 biggest bugbears I had - bin emptying on the V6 is horrible and the brushbar collects so much hair that you need to remove manually. both these issues fixed on the later models. only drawback is that it is much heavier than the V6 which is super light

    • +1

I have both V6 and V10, they are both fit for purpose but V10 has bigger roller which is easy to clean and getting the hair out, as the roller is smooth, whereas the V6 is brush type, a bit messy when trying to clean it.

    • +1

I went V6 to V8 and I felt it was a massive difference…not looking at the V10 or possibly v12…

  • +1

    Thanks! Got one

  • +1

    Cheers OP- great bargain!

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

Anybody well-versed and done their research know how long (life-time) the battery in one of these suckers lasts?

Or typically; how long can you hang on to one before replacing the vacuum entirely?

    • Same battery life question,
Also how long this unit lasts?

      • +2

I bought a refurbished V10 in Aug 2021 and I love it. I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment and usually vacuum the entire place on low/medium and I've not once ran out of battery. I keep it on charge 24/7 with the supplied wall mount. A few YouTube videos show it lasts around 7 minutes on the highest setting. I highly recommend this model !!

        • Thanks for the reply but I meant - how long does the life of the battery typically last? Ie. before the battery needs replacing.

          • +2

@Barry off EastEnders: Oh right. well I'm still using the original battery from 2021 and it's fine ! (so far)

            • @Slurped: Thanks @Slurped ! Noticing any degradation, shortness in the battery life between charges over time?

    • +2

Our V8 is about 5 years old and on its 3rd battery. Both have been replaced by Dyson free of charge - the first was pretty easy as was within the 2yr warranty period, second they initially didn't agree to but then back-flipped when told we would buy a new vacuum from someone else.

    • got a v10 at start of 2019, still in use now 5+ years later. it does the complete 2 bedroom home weekly, plus a couple small quick uses each week.

brand new it was about 7m of battery on the highest power setting. after a few years that 7m on highest setting is only a couple minutes at best. so now it's permanently used on the lower setting, which is still perfectly good on carpet.
not sure how long the lower setting lasts now, but it's enough for the week as we charge it once a week, and it sits off charge for the whole week while still getting used.

i did purchase a 2nd filter though, because when you clean a filter it can take a couple days to completely dry in some melb weather; which means no vacuum. if you try and run it with a damp filter it complains because it detects there's not enough air flow

  • +1

Thanks OP! Waited for a while to get quality cordless vaccum, Pulled trigger!!

    • From experience, I wouldn't say it is "quality"

      • +1

It is, relatively, a quality brand and device.

It's not a great vacuum (and none cordless vacuum is) compared to an ordinary one.

The advantage here is not how well it sucks (because that's mediocre at best), but how handy it is.

      • I bought Dc37c vaccum back in 2019 & it lasted for 4 years hence quality from my prespective.

  • Buy with caution. I have this V10. it broke down after 1 year. motor cooked. I have to wait 6 weeks for replacement (under warranty). Meantime I have no vacuum cleaner. I have bought a Miele bagged vacuum instead.

    • Probably too late but If you live near a showroom just tell support you'd rather take it there. That's what I did and they fixed it on the spot. It turns out I'd sucked up a bunch of water.

  • is the Motorbar™ cleaner head OK for hardfloors? Does it hasten the wear of the motorbar?

    • +1

This was my only problem when I upgraded from the V6. I had to buy a generic fluffy head for $30

      • how is the generic fluffy head holding up?

        • Seems to be close to the original head with the advantage of LED lighting. The one issue was the rollers were supposed to be padded, but they are actually a hard rubber (doesn't seem to scratch the floor though)

          • @Zodiacmindwarp: didn’t buy absolute with fluffy head or wait for sale?

apparently oem definitely better than generic, at least certainly true with batteries

            • @tonester: I bougt it back in January when Dyson had it for $597 (same as the one on sale now). Funny you mention batteries, the latest generic battery for my V6 gives me four extra minutes than the OEM, longevity will be the big test

              • +1

@Zodiacmindwarp: Absolute was even cheaper just before then, though required eBay Plus

yes, longevity is the issue with generic batteries - they only last for months, instead of years like oem

                • @tonester: Damn, never noticed that one back in December, I would have jumped on it for sure

  • +1

Are these sorts of units good for odd jobs, or doing a whole house / apartment? Have a good Miele corded vac and wonder if this is overkill for just doing 30 second jobs here and there.

    • I also use it for the window blinds/ceiling fans in my apartment when they get dusty. Great for cleaning the inside of the car too since it's cordless.

    • +3

Have the v10 and a Miele Cat Dog from about 2006

Cleaning ability the cat dog leaves this thing for dead. What this is fantastic for is odd jobs. I use this most of the time because I vacuum regularly (whole apartment) with it. The convenience over the corded Miele really makes it excellent. Similar experience goes for using both in the car. But when I want to deep clean then the Miele is infinitely better.

      • in your opinion, is this price worth the odd jobs cleaning? and do you use the motorbar on hard floors?

        • +1

Yep definitely. I bought mine in 2019 for $900ish (courtesy of a good CR cashback). I use this one mostly and for $600 it’s a decent buy. If you’re after cordless I would crossshop this with a cordless Miele though, they may be better bang for buck. If you find a newer Miele cordless for cheaper I would probably say get that instead

I use the motor bar on tiled floors and carpet, not floorboards though. It’s been fine after 5 years of use once or twice a week (main reason is to clean kitty litter)

          • @Gunnar: same usage for my Miele MedicAir and recent replaced Dyson V6 with V10 :)

not sure about Miele cordless though - some prefer Samsung over Dyson and Miele

    • +2

I used for whole house. Upgraded to Gen5 2 years ago. Have not used cord for the last 6-7 years.

      • is Gen5 worth the upgrade considering the price difference?

        • I have model below, they are awesome, battery is really good, but if you are super fussy about dust, you might need a second battery.
I go through 1/1/2 per clean on medium suction.

  • Is it just me or the coupon code not working for anyone else?

    • +1

Just you I think. Are you using an Aust eBay account?

      • you were right, got the location sorted, can see it now. thanks mate.

  • I'm part of the general public

  • FFS I just bought a V8 a month ago for $550…

    • +2

When looking into it, the representative at 'The Good Guys' actually told us that the V8 model is better than (the more expensive) V10. I hope that's some consolation!

      • +3

I don't find what a store rep tells me trustworthy until I call the line two more times and hear the same from other reps. Then I'd look it up to confirm.

        • +1

Well in the end the rep recommended a corded Miele, which was less expensive and much better reviewed. In this case he was true to his word after having read reviews in 'Choice' magazine as well as user reviews.

Yes, I wouldn't generally trust a store rep, but equally I wouldn't trust the marketing of companies such as Dyson or Apple.

    • +1

Dyson has a 30 day return policy. See if you are able to return it. Doesn't matter who you bought it from

  • +1

Thanks. Bought one. Our v6 finally gave up last week

    • +1

      Did it just flash red?

If so, the vac is fine. Just the cells are out of balance.

      • Can I ask why you 'negged'?

Edit: Just read your post below, that explains it. Thanks for sharing.

      • Somehow the missus broke it physically. I think she just wanted a new vacuum.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Been looking for a cordless stick vacuum.

  • Actually interested in the heater for study.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155109941914

Not sure if it will use more energy than a 1500W column heater. Cost of replacement filters is a deterrent.

  • The V10 bundle we had comes with a flexible crevice tool, the brush head is detachable, quite annoyed that they don't sell it as a replacement part but have to buy the whole thing.

    https://www.dyson.com.au/flexi-crevice-tool-971433-01

  • +6

    Don't support this mob.

They have purposely not connected the cell balancing in their battery packs. Even though the hardware is there, they haven't connected it. This means the battery will die prematurity… even though it's perfectly fine, just out of balance. Normally an easy fix, but they also added an eeprom to stop people fixing it. Forcing a perfectly fine battery to be discarded

I'm hoping a multi Billion $+ lawsuit heads their way.

This leads to premature life / landfill. Just scum.

If you can, get a drill battery adapter. Feel free to harness the cells out of the pack. They are 99% of the time fully functional.

    • source for this? very interesting

      • Its a long read, but this is the rabbit hole I went down, after finding a vacuum with faulty battery at the tip

        https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/dyson-v7-trigger-cordl…

Put the repair in the too hard basket after finding some functional battery packs

        • +4

So this forum PhD is based on a few-year-old model? and this is Dyson V10. How do you know, they still using the same tech?

          • @boomramada: Open the battery pack… Well, they no longer put the balancing hardware in there anymore (just pads where it is meant to go)

            • +1

@tunzafun001: I am not opening a perfectly working one even after two years. Last time when it failed on an older Dyson, the V6, out of warranty, Dyson replaced it for free. I'm not complaining.

              • @boomramada: Ok, cool..Maybe they are doing this as they have now been caught out with battery packs not fit for purpose.

Take note everyone else that has a flashing battery pack.

    • I've been considering buying a Dyson stick for a couple of years, my friends swear by it (although they may be brainwashed by the marketing, claims, etc.). I did pull the trigger on this for a couple for reasons:

      • Buy risk free with eBay Plus - return for free)
      • Buy now, secure the stock and do research between now and when it arrives.

I've been skeptical how a stick vacuum can outperform a plug in model such as a Miele, which is top notch. Also claims of filtering out microbes and nasties that other vacuums, according to Dyson cannot.

They seem to invest heavily on marketing and convenience and remind me of Apple in many ways, eg. more on marketing, planned obsolescence while prioritising aesthetics.

Is this too cynical? Am I on the right track or does the price tag truly match the quality?

      • +1

Stick vac has a very small collection tray. Once it's more than 1/2 full..it starts becoming useless.

People think they are cleaning…they aren't… it's just smashing dirt and dropping dirt back down.

Then you need to clean the mesh each time for full suction. Clean the middle sock filter every 3 times.

Kirby/ Miele…use it 100 times before needing to empty…but it has a chord.

        Simple as that.

So stick vac is good for a quick clean, but you MUST clean it out thoroughly each time to be anywhere near a chorded.

        • Thanks again, this confirms many user reviews, 'Choice' magazine as well as a rep that steered us away from Dyson and recommended a corded Miele.

Cheers @tunzafun001 - I've cancelled the order and will stick (get it?…stick..) with my recently purchased stick vacuum from ALDI for $99 which has been working great for a quick clean.

          • @Barry off EastEnders: Yeah the Aldi is as good as any other.

We 'had to get' a Dyson (did you say good marketing). In fact got two…both hard rubbish throw aways.

Balanced the cells and put back into action.

Kirby comes out for a proper vaccum.

    • You can still manually balance the cells with a lab power supply, but yes, it's a bit of a pain.

      • +3

Need to reflash the eeprom as well once it's gone into 30 red flash mode. In fact a manual balance can actually throw it into fault mode. It's just pathetic / disgusting..they need a HUGE environmental fine. Make an example of this practice.

  • The Good Guys is selling it for $607 if you have a $30 coupon or prefer to buy locally.

    • Noting that retailers like TGG usually have 3 less accessories than buying direct from Dyson (worth $79).

  • What about aftermarket batteries, rather than Dyson OEM. I assume the same issues?

    • Not sure. Ali Express have them. Can't be any worse than the factory battery.
Quiet possibly original "dead" batteries balanced and reflashed.

  • +1

I have a V10 and it's been the worst Dyson vac I've owned, and I've owned a few. The problems I've had (and are reflected in other people's reviews too):

    • Taking the stick out of the barrel every time to empty it is a pain in the arse, especially as something goes wrong with the socket and you have to brute force the stick out each time.
    • The barrel is small and fills up quickly (the next iteration of the product was literally the V10 Big Bin)
    • The release trigger to open the barrel goes bad over time, you have to brute force it open and then it doesn't relatch when you close it without some manual fiddling
    • As the seals in the barrel deform, more dust comes up through to the filter at the top of the machine, to the point where you have to wash and change the filter every single time you use it

Very disappointed overall; I paid $1100 for it when it was a new product from Dyson. They've replaced a few bits under warranty over time - the whole motor and the battery. Warranty support is good with Dyson in my experience, but the design of this machine is lacking.

    • Samsung next?

    • Yep.. rubbish design..and they knighted the bloke..

The true genius is how poorly and cheap it's made. ..yet costs sooooo much.

      That does deserve a knighthood.

  • Thanks OP, Got Good guys to price match it for $585.

  • This or Dreame T20?

  • OOS

  • +1

Good Guys has the V15 for $850 down from $1499 as well.

  • +1

    got one. thx OP

  • If you don't need the 3 bonus accessories, the standard kit similar to what retailers are selling are now $557 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155847599660

  • Apparently they knighted Miles Dyson for his services to humanity.
