  • absolutely love mine but the treble is too much for some. these are also great for gaming ie hearing footsteps and strong imaging

    • Which ohm to get for pc gaming?

      • +4

doesn't matter at all, just get whatever your system is capable of driving

Take a look at EqualiserAPO (and Peace, which is a GUI for it) as it's a system-wide equaliser for Windows.

It should be able to tame that treble for you.

      • i quite like the treble myself but this is a good tip for those who dont!

Thank you for this suggestion jong! I found the DT 880 a bit too flat and was thinking whether I should return it (if possible). Boosting the Bass and Highs using Peace was as simple as selecting "Boosting Bass and Highs". Completely changed how the DT880 sounds. I guess I am more of a generic listener who prefers the v shaped profile.. Thanks again.

        • You're very welcome.

  • dt880 vs 990 which one is better?

    • +1

it's subjective - dt990 is more v shaped while the dt880 is more neutral. the dt880 is semi open while the 990 is fully open back.

    • Whichever is truer to the producers mix. There's no point listening to well made music if it's then f'd up with headphones that can't relay it to your ears. If as laclantula says, the 880 is the more neutral of the two then I'd second that.

I regularly use AKG702's. Superb headphones indeed. They lack slightly in sub-bass but more than make up for it in all other area's. I only suggest 702's because they fall into a similar price bracket to those posted and represent outstanding value. I've also had extensive experience with cans over $5k (some MUCH more than that) and can confidently say you're not paying for improvements in sound quality at that price.

For reference, Aud$1k will deliver everything you can get in terms of SQ. For that solitary k you can hear exactly what the producer works hard for. Every dollar beyond is for exotic materials, exclusivity and everything else that matters not to this passionate listener.

      • have always wanted a pair of 702's, might just get them this time. what's a good price for them?

  • Looks like DT 880 only has 250 ohm version in stock

    Rtings Comparison:

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO and the Beyerdynamic DT 880 PRO are both very good headphones for critical listening, but they have different sound profiles.

Both headphones have a bright and clear treble.

However, the DT 880 lack bass compared to the DT 990 PRO, which pack a stronger punch.

This makes the DT 880 sound brighter compared to the DT 990, which sound boomier.

Both headphones also sound rather sharp, but the intensity depends on how sensitive you are to the higher frequencies.

You're talking about different headphones. These are the non-pro version.

      • +2

Which sound exactly the same as the non-pro, they just have slightly more clamping force on the band, a coiled cable and come in black and 80ohm.

It's a pretty decent comparison, the semi open and neutral sounding 880 is better for mixing, but the DT990 is a better set of headphone in most user cases.

Clamping force directly affects how headphones sound. You can confirm this by pressing any pair of headphones against your ears using your hands, and notice what happens.

Good to know they're technically the same headphones otherwise, but they won't sound "exactly" the same. Whether one is "better" than the other is another matter.

          slightly more clamping force

According to Beyerdynamic, the difference is enough to describe them as: "Tight (3.5 N) Vs Comfortable (2.8 N)".

          • @cerealJay: He commented on their sound profiles with a an accurate and concise comparison and you downvoted him and told him they were different headphones. Then you come and argue semantics…

Do you really think the clamping force is going to press the headphones closer to your ears? If the clamping is too tight you can easily manipulate the headphone to make it less so. They sound the same.

            • @LurkMoar: Clamping force isn't adjustable.

Do you really think the clamping force is going to press the headphones closer to your ears?

              Yes. That's the whole point.

              • @cerealJay: Sigh… You can very easily bend the metal headband in a couple of minutes to reduce the clamping force or just use something that keeps them pried open for a while to achieve the same effect. The compression of the pads on the pro model isn't like pressing the headphones in using your hands at all, you could just shake you head around more and the headphones wouldn't move as much. I've used both.

What is the technical difference between DT 880/990 Edition and DT 880/990 PRO?

        According to Beyerdynamic:
The corresponding variants with the same impedance sound the same.
The same transducer systems are used.
The Edition models have a slightly softer headband for enjoying music at home while the Pro phones have a tighter fit onto the head for everyday work in the studio.

  • I didn't find much info on the DT990 with that look? Is that just a recent cosmetic change? All the ones I found where black with a different grill.

  • Many people said dt990 is unbearably loud, just a heads up.

    • They probably bought the wrong ohm version for their use scenario. And if they don't know what difference it makes… you ought to take any advice from them with a grain of salt :p
