DT 990 is also $199 - anyone know how they compare?

edit: Looks like there had been same discussions in the past on this

In short, dt990 is more enjoyable out of the box with more prominent bass, dt880 has the typical studio mixing centric neutral-bright sound. I prefer the 880 after owning both in the past.

Beyerdynamic are a great starting point for fantastic comfort, quality and sound. I've got the DT250, DT1990.. had and sold the DT990 and DT880.

Tough choice. DT880 seems to lack a bit of detail in comparison but a touch more bass and make a good all-rounder. The DT990 is a bit too bright, has a treble peak (at 10k kHz iirc).
Both benefit from EQ. I'd probably suggest Sennheiser HD 6xx, but $200 is pretty good for these. Just look at some comparisons/reviews.

Ps. Get the 250 ohm, can still drive them without an amp if you have to but it's still recommended.

Ahh reminds me of the good ol days of the holy trinity; K701, HD600, and DT880.
Tempted to rebuy the 600ohm version for nostalgia’s sake but I know for sure I don’t need them LMAO.
Also I found that 250 ohm is the sweet spot for me, some (including myself) find the 600 ohm more prone to sibilance.

    • 250 fan here as well 😄

      • Is the 32ohm version better if plugged directly to a laptop?

        • +2

          Yeah for sure.

Wouldn't go the 250 or 600 without having a headphone amp.

They higher will work, they just won't get very loud. Higher ohm requires more power to drive.

If you have a dedicated space, I rate decent headphone amp though, but that's me (I use a JDs atom fyi)

        • +1

Yes. Unless the laptop is a macbook M1 Pro 2021 or M2/M3 pro (these have better amp/dac than a schiit stack and drive the 250 and 600 ohm very well)

How does it compare to phillips X2HR?

    • Significantly better, but so is the HIFIMAN HE400SE (Stealth and non-Stealth) and the Sennheiser HD 560S.

Hell, even the HD 599 is in most respects.

    • rtings actually rates them slightly higher on comfort and (most of) the audio quality tests:

      https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/beyerdynamic…

    • +1

If you're not a bonafide audiophile, the X2HR is far more enjoyable with movies, gaming and comfort.

Far more bass so a more 'fun' all rounder. They're open, so heat and long sessions is not an issue.

IMO no detachable cable = no buy for me these days. The first thing to go is always the cable and I dont want to have to re-solder connections because of a stupid 10c cheapening by a headphones company.

      • Depends how rough you are on your stuff. I've never had an issue, ever. You can still get replacement parts.

Ps. Get the DT 1990 pro if you want detachable.
        Buy right, buy once.

  • +3

Highly Recommended, I've had the 600 ohm for many years and the quality sound and comfort is exceptional

  • +1

Had one decades ago, highly recommended. Eventually sold it after buying the T1 gen 1 flagship at the time.

There's a difference in sound but I'd say it's about 10% max, if you tried them side by side you'd be hard pressed to pay 4-5x for the flagship.

    • Agreed, I also had the T1 second generation and ended up selling it as I didn't see that much of a difference.

Upgrading to the Sennheisers HD800S felt like a bigger jump, but regarding value the DT 880 is hard to beat.

  • If you got a good amp, hard to beat, they used to be $450-$500 back in the day and still perform at that price.

  • DT440 & DT250 user here. Love Beyerdynamic headphones. This is a very good price for new straight from the distributor 880's, although have seen occasionally cheaper on amazon's uk usa or aus sites during the past 10 years.

  • Which would better compliment my HD600: DT880 or DT990?

For reference, the only thing I'm really looking for is wider sound stage. That's the main thing I'm missing from the HD600. Not sure if these options would fulfill that.

    • +1

Neither. The upgrade is too small and neither would make a significant difference.

Dt880 has better bass mainly. DT990 just sucks and is too bright unless you have some sustained hearing loss in which case it will sound good.

    • If soundstage alone is all you care about - the 990 will beat its competitors in this price range definitely.

    • A planar with a wider stage would better compliment your HD600.

Look into the Edition XS and the Ananda Nano.

      • +1

They are 3-4x more expensive than this deal

        • The point is the jump is too small to be worth any upgrade at this price point. With edition xs its a 2.5x jump as its on sale for $500-550ish on aliexpress regularly.

          • @zjz93: It does offer a pretty large soundstage in comparison and the frequency leading to what some consider exaggerated treble of the 990s can further help you pinpoint certain sounds and instruments ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • You would probably hate these if you're used to hd600's.

They will have a wider soundstage but be prepared for the beyer house sound - a peaky treble and sibilance

  • Can i use it for Guitar effects like Quad Cortex?
If so , which ohm would be good?

    • +1

It is not quite clear what the output power and output impedance of the Quad Cortex's headphone out is. I wouldn't recommend using it with the headphone out on the board because of that.

Safest bet is to go with 32 ohm, but if the output impedance on the quad cortex is high, it might change the sound of the headphones and your guitar won't sound right.

But if you go with 250 or 600 ohm the headphones just might be too quiet if the coretex lacks the power to drive it.

  • Any idea how this compares to the Focal Elegia? I was zeroing in on that until now.

    • Its significantly better if you like more full sounding male vocals

  • -1

the design is a bit old fashion though.

    • Agreed, I prefer the ones with a large spike directly into the cerebral cortex.

  • +1

DT880 are my favourite sound signature

  • I have had my 990's for 13 years and still going strong. They are wonderful

  • +1

32 ohm out of stock, dang. Was thinking of grabbing them for the office.

  • +2

    Extremely comfy.

  • Noob question: For practicing bass guitar, would 880 or 990 be preferable? I'm using a Scarlett Focusrite Solo, would that be enough if I were to purchase the 250 or 600 ohm ones?

    • Which version of the Solo? I believe most version drive up to about 200 ohm (although there's huge variation in there on what 200 ohm means). Definitely don't get the 600 ohm, the Solo has an amp but it's not a great one (it's not really the purpose of it).

For practicing I imagine it's fine though, I'm thinking about the same setup but with guitar. I was just going to buy a pair of AKG K52s for practice but I figure I'll treat myself and use it for listening to music as well.

I'd go the 880s too due to the cleaner sound.

  • Few questions
Thinking of buying these for PC Gaming/movies.
    880vs990?
seeming as the 32ohms is sold out would it be better to just get the 250ohms for now and a dac down the line?
is the inline cable removable it appears to be fixed and concerns me as the cable is usually the first thing to give in headphones.
any other recommendations price limit say $250aud
current headphones are Razer Blacksharks which im sure in an audiophiles mind are terrible

    • 880s would be better for gaming, they are almost the perfect gaming headphone. The 990s would be better for movies but I am nit picking. There is no reason why the 880s would be bad at movies it's just that they wouldn't sound as impactful and might sound a little underwhelming if you compared to the 990s for movies. If you don't play competitive games then get the 990s, if you play competitive games just get the 880s.

  • Been using my 600Ω for about 15 years. Amazing headphones, especially when it comes to bringing out fine details and soundstage. Might be a bit to bright for younger people but for 30+ they should be fine.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just bought a 600Ω pair. Such nostalgia…
