  • Stock coming from Germany. I wouldn't think this would come with an AU power adapter. Most likely this comes with a UK or EU power adapter in the box and nothing else. Perhaps need to buy an appropriate third party AU power adapter for this.

    • The AU retail boxes come with a multi-plug adapter.

      • AU retail box comes with Australian, UK and US socket connections that clip onto power brick.
        Most importantly under region have the option to select: Asia, China, Europe, Korea, Singapore, United States or Australia.

    EU routers are hardware locked to have weaker transmission power so I wouldn't want to buy higher end routers from there…

    • Perhaps that's one reason why it's cheaper.

          There is a Merlin firmware for this router. You could flash this with it to get full WiFi power output. It however probably voids the warranty?.

            @hollykryten: Probably can tweak it using Merlin, but I noticed Merlin firmware doesn't bypass region configuration as it is based on Asus firmware. I have an Asus router (overseas model) running Merlin. There are less languages available for that router and it has an option that region specific (i.e. that special cloud service is not applicable / usable in Australia).

              @netsurfer: Flashing Merlin doesn't get around power limits.

              • @gamerkonks: I see. Never mind then. :(

                The EU model it's a POS model then.

              • @gamerkonks: It is linux based (even the Asus firmware is) so if one really wants to, it is likely still possible to hack it at command line level.

                I think 2 years ago, I was mucking around with merlin firmware and wanted to boost the wifi power level. I elected to use command line to go above what the UI page allows (because I wanted the router to remain in AU region, but wanted to boost WiFi power). There are a lot more you can do with entware, actual linux commands and scripts.

                Anyway, I found is it didn't help much. If the router couldn't provide good coverage at certain areas of the house, boosting that power limit wouldn't fix that.

                Just a bit of google:

                {x}@RT-AC67U-4878:/tmp/home/root# nvram show | grep -e 'country_code\|location_code\|territory_code\|ccode'
                wl0_country_code=CN
                cfg_location_code=AU
                location_code=XX
                1:ccode=CN
                wl_country_code=
                size: 54231 bytes (11305 left)
                0:ccode=CN
                territory_code=AA/04
                wl1_country_code=CN
                {x}@RT-AC67U-4878:/tmp/home/root#

                An Aussie posted info on how to get region information out of an Asus router. You can also find discussions on people talking about the best region to use. However, I am not responsible for your actions. If you voided your warranty by region tweaking, then it's your problem.

          • @hollykryten: Warranty would require shipping back to supplier, overseas model will not be entertained by ASUS AU.

    • Why is that so?

    • I bought an overseas model of TP-link router recently that was a WiFi 6E but it turned out that it was under-powered and it's wifi signal was super weak. I managed to on-sell the router but would never be buying these overseas models, unless there is evidence that the custom firmware can revert to its normal wifi power.

    • Can this router be imported from Taiwan or China and exported to work here? Asus routers just too expensive compare to overseas

    • Does anyone have any more information about this? What is the real-world consequence?

  • Are there actual real-world tests on the effects of the lower Tx power?

    • It helps a bit and mostly makes our brain feels better. There is nothing stopping you from going in with linux commands to boost it (though the actual transmit power won't match what's show on the UI screen).

      Put it this way, I gave up on boosting the Tx power years ago and went with Mesh setup to fix lousy WiFi coverage issue. The lower Tx power is more EU wanting safer environment (WiFi waves are exactly great for us). Would you sleep next to a WiFi router?

      • So just MOAR POWAH!!! lol

        Yeah - that's what I was gonna say. If your use case needs a ton more power for coverage, and don't mind the increased interference, (nd AU standard isn't that much higher, it's 200mw compared to US which is 1W), you should be looking at a mesh setup and not the AU version of this router.

        • The bit I am not sure is the plug adapter. I don't like using plug converter. Big one is bulky, small one is dodgy.

          Correcting a typo earlier: WiFi waves are aren't exactly great for us

          • @netsurfer: You don't need a converter. The router comes with 3 sets of adapters

            • @Broomstick: I know the AU version does. I bought 2 Asus routers from other regions before. Neither one came with the AU adapter plug piece.
              So EU versions do come with 3? So EU, AU and which one is the 3rd one? US/JP?

              • @netsurfer: Hmm you'd think it'd be the same across all regions but if that's your experience then I'm not sure. I almost pulled the trigger on this one but decided to pay the extra $20 after reading comments about regions.

    I was looking at buying an Asus RT- AX88U pro from Amazon US, as the channels and power are similar to Australia.

    I decided not to get one from Germany as i believe they are region locked and a lot of mucking around if you could get it to Australia region and power output.

    Plus you have to factor a power adapter plug and live with no warranty, as they Asus told me no international warranty on the product.

    To bad if you get a dud.

    Decided to buy local another router.

  • how much do these usually cost in Australia?

    • Amazon AU currently has it for $471.95 but the RRP is $499. This is for the Australian model.

      • Asus is such a rip off in Aus. Pretty sure China and Taiwan selling 30% less

  • With WIFI 7 now, is it worth spending this much of a WIFI 6 router or wait for ASUS to release the next gen?

    • Asus do have a Wi-Fi 7 router out already, the GT-BE98, but that's $1500. Hopefully they'll release a cheaper model some day!

      • I doubt thats the next gen to this one, the one you are referring to is probably in another category at that price

        they are starting to talk about different tier WIFI 7 routers
        https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=ASUS+Unve…

        • That looks reasonable, although no 6ghz option, will be interesting to see the price.

    • i would if you can afford if always go for the very latest.

      • That's the thing, in this lineup, this is the latest. Surely ASUS will release something with WIFI 7 in this particular lineup.

        • it will be double the price or more, useless to future proof

  • Achtung achtung

  • Asus good.

    Actually a great router for home lab and cyber related things

  • I've been using an Aussie 68U Pro for a couple of weeks. Haven't noticed any improvement over my UK import 58U that it replaced.

    • It probably depends on how far from the WiFi router the device is. You won't notice a difference if the device is close enough to the router.

  • Also Germany but Dual Wan
    Much chepaer than Aus prices
