Good for gaming since you still mostly only need single-core performance. Plus not really a fan of the 'new gen' = 'more performance cause more heat' design of 13th-14th gen.
Yeah, especially if you do graphic intensive single player games. Honestly even a 12400 would be fine for 4070ti or something. Yes you wont get the absolute theoretical limit from your gpu but its better then having the budget taken off your gpu.
Current i7 is 600-650. That's around 90% more. Best believe You wont be getting 90% better performance. Just like an iPhone from 2 years ago is perfectly capable today.
Not 90%, but with 14700k you will be getting 50% more multi core performance due to better arch and 8 more ecores
Not to mention the support of higher frequency ram is great boost for productivity as well.
The 13600K is a better comparison with the 12700K. It costs ~100 more but it's slightly faster in both multithreaded and gaming use.
I would love to see the calculations you made to come up with 90%.
Imagine the heat coming out of this thing.
Great for the upcoming winter
If I had a better motherboard I'd definitely jump on the 12600K and sell my 12100 (spare PC).
Unfortunately the VRM on the Asus Prime B660M-A Wifi is not particularly good even with top and side VRM heatsink.
Is it worth underclocking?
yes
The 12600K isn't really a problem for that board
https://www.techspot.com/review/2426-intel-b660-motherboards…
It doesn't seem to be that terrible, especially if you have a decent airflow case. Even better if you pair it with an aftermarket downdraft cooler to give the VRM a hand
The latest Thermalright downdraft cooler seems to manage the 13600K ok, should be fine for this as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx6kHShGzb0&t=273s
Ok yes @Satirical and @tatsulotto are right - I consulted the Budget B660 Comparison from Hardware Unboxed this time and saw that it seemed to be fine for 12600K. I previously was using the 18 Board Comparison and it only had Prime B660M-A numbers for 12700, which were quite bad.
And of course, one would assume that the 12700, a 65W part on paper, would be cooler than 12600K, a 125W part on paper - but it turns out the PL1 for 12700 is 180W vs 150W for the 12600K lol
In theory the temps should even be slightly better for my Wifi version of the motherboard, which has an additional top VRM heatsink.
I have this exact motherboard and i5-12600KF, with 64GB DDR4 RAM, a couple of Samsung 980 m.2 drives and a 7900 XT.
It works great!
I previously had an i7-9700k and wasn't really looking to upgrade, however I noticed someone was selling the board as new on eBay for $100 after changing their mind and wanting to go with a DDR5 board, which sent me down the upgrade rabbit hole because it was around last year's Black Friday sales.
I originally wanted an i5-12400, however they were out of stock at Scorptec, so I went with the 12600 which has been a great purchase so far.
I love that the board also supports 14th gen intel options, so if I need to upgrade in a year or two, I can (although I can't see much of a performance increase without also having to upgrade my cooler and PSU).
Can I ask what cooler you are using? I've just got a single tower cooler atm, not sure if dual tower is required.
I picked up a DeepCool AK400, and popped a second 120mm fan on it, which I had lying around, which isn't really needed unless you have a hot GPU (7900 XT gets a bit hot under load).
@Pedrohustler: Great cooler these - I have one on a Ryzen 7600X
Is it worth upgrading from i5 12400?
Is it a tool or a hobby?
If current one does fine, no it’s not “worth” upgrading
A few 'cheap' motherboard options at the moment if you're after a Z690 chipset board to go with one of these CPUs:
mATX: Gigabyte Z690M AORUS ELITE DDR4: $199 + shipping at PCCG
ATX: Gigabyte Z690 GAMING X DDR4: $249 + shipping at JW
ITX: ASRock Z690M-ITX/AX (DDR4): $255.67 + shipping/free with Prime etc. at Amazon US via Amazon AU
There are likely some savings to be had going with a B660/B760 board if you don't need the features of a Z-series board, but the Z690M AORUS ELITE DDR4 at $199 + shipping seems like a good deal to me.
The Core i5-12600K also hits a few weird niches at this price in the current market:
For people looking to put together a new cheap(er) rig, you can snag the Montech Air 903 Max at PCCG as well while you're at it, and IIRC that qualifies you for free shipping.
That's a really good case for that money!
For a new build for gaming, I would rather pay a bit more for 7600 + DDR5.
Snapped up the i7-12700K thanks OP.
I got one too! Couldn't resist the price, cannot find a used one on marketplace or gumtree cheaper. Thought I'd share this deal!
Been looking at an upgrade sometimes in the next 12 months.
Looking at i5-12600K but I will also need to upgrade motherboard, ram and buy a heatsink/cooler. Is this still a good deal if I need to buy all those other items as well or am I better off waiting for a good bundle deal?
Im happy to hold onto this if I buy it while I wait for some good RAM and MOBO deals.
I don't have crazy needs some light video editing and occasional gaming of older games.
There will be new gen in 12 months, old generation CPU most likely going to be cheaper or newer generation going be faster. Eg, You could get a 13600k for this price, which is much faster for gaming and productivity.
So you would hold off for now because you think prices will go down as it gets closer to the next gen chips being released?
Depends if you already have any LGA1700 or DDR4 parts. If not then AM5 or the future 15th gen (LGA1851) will have the better upgrade path.
@tekisei: Thanks
I will not buy most computer parts included CPU 12 months in advance, I will not say it will drop price, but most likely in 12 months time. As Intel 15th gen could be out, 12th gen (this) will be very outdated. You may want 13th gen by the time or 12th gen should be even cheaper. Or even AMD has something attractive or bargain.
@stevelo: Thanks for clarifying.
Which one of these do I need to play dragons dogma 2? / gaming? As I understand games tend to use less cores.
Currently have an i5 12400f, and picking up a 4070ti on the way as my 1060gb just cant cut it anymore with new releases.. and I think its a CPU heavy game too.
Depends on the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor. I guess 1440p should be the minimal res if you are using 4070 Ti. 12400f should be fine with 4070Ti. If you are runnning 1080p with high refresh rate like 240hz or 360hz, you will need to upgrade your CPU to 12600K or higher.
Here is the reference benchmark running by RTX 4080 with 10700F under 4K and 1440p:
Thanks so much for the very helpful reply, truly appreciate it! No high refresh rates, although for resolution I am hoping to play in 4k on a TV every now and then.
the i5 12600k is an extremely good CPU for the money. At $249 the value/performance is unbeatable. Would recommend.
The 12700K is $339 now with code BLUEBYYOU https://www.centrecom.com.au/intel-core-i7-12700k-unlocked-l…
Thanks kskinny ill post this up if
12th gen tho
