Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 Graphics Card $939 + Delivery ($0 to Metro) + Surcharge @ Mwave

670

An RDNA 3 card that actually makes sense
AMD have recently un-nerfed the Radeon drivers so the GRE memory can now be "overclocked" to run at their actual 20Gbps+ speeds
Based on HUB testing, the GRE is now 23-34% cheaper than the 4070 Ti Super and 7900 XT whilst being only 0-8% slower across 1440p and 4K gaming

Card Price Difference 1440p Avg FPS Difference 4K Avg FPS Difference
7900 GRE 16GB $939 118 70
7800 XT 16GB $769 -18% 99 -16% 57 -19%
4070 Ti 12GB $999 +6% 116 -2% 64 -9%
7900 XT 20GB $1159 +23% 127 +8% 75 +7%
4070 Ti Super 16GB $1260 +34% 124 +5% 70 0%

The PowerColor GRE variant is $10 cheaper @ PCCG but this Sapphire has a superior power stage design

The only "properly" good offering this whole generation imo. Shame it's like 6 months before next gen. Less if counting intel's battlemage.

    • +4

I'm really hoping next generation both companies decide to do a 180 although i doubt it. Like 20s to 30s was major improvement in terms of value ((profanity) mining). Anyways I have no hope and I'm honestly prepared for next generation to barely change prices if at all.

      • Amd and nvidia CEOs are related to each other. Probably conspiring to keep jacking prices

  • +2

    Slightly better than 7800xt

    • +1

Yeah would be nice to see how it stacks up for $769.

    • why do we not save 50$ just for 7800xt when you say its slightly better? is it better priced for high resolution against rx 7900xt or something?

      • Its closer to 7900xt performance than 7800xt, especially since lifting OC limits

    • +1

Which is just a 6800xt, great that we can get cards that cost more and are only slightly better than gpus released 3.5 years ago!

      • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt Technically cheaper right now but you're right, should be a lot cheaper considering it's basically the same performance. Anyone who bought the 6xxx series at a good price are the real winner of the GPU market the past few years. I always laugh at how much people paid for their Nvidia 30xx series.

        • Progress has slowed down a bit, frustratingly. The current price equivalent, inflation adjusted, for the GPU I bought 3.5 years ago outperforms it by… 40%, and still uses slightly more power to do so.

  • +9

hmmm.. I think for the $999 the 4070ti is a much better buy..
    https://www.centrecom.com.au/galax-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-ex-ga…

only $60 more, slightly faster and much better ray tracing..

    • +15

      12GB eww

    • +8

Really not sure why you're getting negged Kelvin, even as an AMD fan, I tend to agree.

      These need to be sub-900.

      • +1

aggressive "the top dog in the pack is bad" fanboys. Nvidia is still generally worth the slight premium over AMD (at the top end range) due to technology (DLSS, RT, Frame Gen) and a multitude of online support. But sure, I can understand going with AMD if you just want pure $ to rasterised performance.

        • I went with the 6900 XT over the 4090 because of the Apple support.

With Apple silicon Macs not supporting eGPU, I'm not sure it's worthwhile anymore.

          • @OzJD: thats not having a choice at all because the 4090 is in a whole different league compared to the 6900xt

    • +2

Problem is even with "much better raytracing" it's like 40fps, so everyone would turn that off anyway..

      • -1

no, at those lower frames, the % increase there is a huge deal. eg >60fps is a far better game play experience than 30-40fps

        • +2

Yes when comparing 35fps with 41fps, on paper it's a massive % increase, but what I'm saying is you are still only playing with 41fps on the RTX anyway…

          • @Grish: Ray tracing is still not a serious graphical option for normal games. Unless you have a 4090.

    • Not to mention, Nvidia cards are better for non-gaming loads. Just the all-round better card

  • Tbh I think if AMD introduces worldwide 6750GRE that would be much more appealing than this.

    • It was a sad day when they stopped selling 6700 XTs.

      • +5

Forcing ppl to 7700 XT, no one buys lol. 6750 GRE I remember is the best selling AMD card in China cuz when it gets to higher end cards like 7800 XT, ppl would rather pay a bit premium to get nvidia.

  • +1

in your list its directly comparable to the 4070 ti which is available for $1085 rn
$146 more and you get much better ray tracing performance and the rest of the nvidia features
    https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/GQofC5RFonswVPJ7E5VqBM.png

if AMD could make fsr not crap then it would be a clear winner but unfortunately it's still a tug of war over which features you want

  • +1

This is a better value proposition than most RDNA 3 cards, especially after a memory OC. Although bear in mind this performs at ~RTX 4070 level in RT.

  • +1

I assume it will play CS2 without crashing, unlike the 4080 driver debacle.

    https://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/rtx-4080-crash-cs2-pgl-2024

  • What about GMAT?

  • so this is only price competitive if the consumer overclocks it?

    • It's price competitive to begin with - 5% less performance for 6% less price compared to 4070 Ti.

There's a better value proposition on top due to the GRE's larger OC headroom.

  • How are amd drivers generally?

Are there any microstutter issues and is amd stable?

I’ve heard there are lots of crashes in some games like helldivers 2.

    • +2

The drivers are fine, and have been ever since the brief period of instability around the 5700 XT launch.

    • I’ve also heard reports of Hell Divers 2 issues.

If you only play a few games and you’re certain the AMD card works well in those, go for it

If you want it to just work (nearly) all the time stick to team green.

Personally I have owned both a 7900xtx and a 4080 recently, I would never recommend an AMD card to a less experienced user though.

      • thanks. While I am not 'less experienced', I also just cbf these days. So team green it is for me :(

  • +3

Am I missing something? In YouTube video's the 7900GRE performs a bit better than a 4070 Super and just under a 4070Ti in Raytracing, yet people are saying it is a lot less than that. With DLSS vs FSR, I think Nvidia is the better choice for a little more, though FSR 3.1 is looking better than 2.2 / 3.0.

    • +1

      Am I missing something?

      NVIDIA mindshare + anchoring bias.
