Can We Make a Small Bedroom as Media Room? Size 2.8m X 3.0m

Thinking of wall mounting a 77 inch 4K OLED TV along with a 3 seater couch on opposite side in a 2.8m x 3.0m Room. Will this configuration be acceptable? Or should i downsize TV size to 65 inch? Also There are mirrored wardrobes in the room, so might need to put a curtain on them to not reflect TV screen's light. Suggestions please.

    But why?

2.8x3, plus you have furniture in there is not going to be a great experience

    • +1

exactly , viewing distance will be terrible..

65 in like a 5 x 5 with furniture is kind of as low as i would go for an ok experience

        https://imgur.com/a/tb8uVtC

        How awful does that look?!

        • +2

If you were to do it I think you would skip the TV Unit and go straight up wall mounted, which would vastly improve the experience.

          • @witheredcouch: Depends on use case. Even wall mounted, would you want a games console, or soundbar etc

            • +1

@spackbace: I'd wall mount the tv, have a soundbar below and have any stuff plugged in over on the side with cables running through the wall.

Definitely not ideal though. That is quite a chunky couch in your graphic though, something slimmer could make the room feel a lot larger

        • +1

this is a great example of how bad it would be haha

          dat sofa though.

maybe can downgrade to a couple of bcf camping chairs to reduce the footprint…

        • You forgot the entrance door.
Remove the doors on the wardrobe and put all the equipment in there, game consoles etc.

          • +2

            @Sammy2000:

            You forgot the entrance door.

I put a sliding door? Normal opening door would make it worse

            I realised after that I forgot a window :P

    • just a 3 seater couch and TV wall mounted, still not okay?

      • +6

brah if u want it just do it , no amount of convincing here will change your mind if you want to make it happen

        • +1

(i would recommend the 65 though, but again dont let me stop you lol)

      • +2

Have you mocked this up? Just get a load of cardboard the size of a 75" TV and put it up on the wall first.

Sound is going to be a big problem- crazy reflections, and gigantic bass dead spots if you're using a subwoofer. Don't go crazy on the sound system… in fact, don't even bother to install a sub.

  • +3

I'd do it. Check out this calculator but better still test out the distance in-store. Screen mounted too high is a more common mistake than screen too big.

    • just a 3 seater couch and TV wall mounted, still not okay?

      • +2

I rate it OK, and with that room size your home theatre will sound great! Have you ever visited anyone whose screen is too big?

    • My thought process isn't a matter of distance from tv, it's how the room will look and feel. I'd be guessing it'll feel cramped and tiny, and almost like a punishment for going in there to watch something

      • But OP says it's a media room

        • Former bedroom with a mirrored wardrobe, turned into a media room

          • @spackbace: So perhaps some acoustic treatment to deal with the hard reflective surfaces?

  • I have seen some examples online with big tv and a small room designs, they look good?

    • +1

It'll be fine. Definitely have to remove the mirrored wardrobe or at least cover with blockout curtains. You'll need to cover any windows too. Might have to turn the sub down a bit otherwise it'll sound echoey.

    • +1

      Everything looks good online.

  • +7

This is the worst design I could create given the limited time.

    • +1

      Pretty sure that's bigger than 2.8x3 ;)

    • +3

Where did you get the 4:3 TV from? Is it a Sony WEGA?

      • +1

this is going to be perfect for playing street fighter 2 on the sega genesis ii

        • +1

          Perfect classic games room!

      • +11

It's actually a CRT. The tube penetrates into the next room which functions as a drying room.

    • i like what you've done with the cornice lighting, woulda traded the strip light @ tv cabinet and bench for bias backlighting on the tv back but

    • +1

No wardrobe with mirrored doors though..

      • +4
        • +1

the 4 downlights in a row like that for a 3m wide span triggers me…but other than that, A+ effort

        • +4

Looks sweet, but might need to explain to ChatGPT how mirrors work?

        • What you need is the door at the back opens to the ensuite. Much more efficient.

    • +3

I like how none of the seating points to the TV.

  • use the home theater designer here:

    https://www.audioadvice.com/home-theater-design#designer

The width and depth settings dont go lower than 3.05m but it gives you can idea of what it might look like

  • The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers recommends sitting at a distance where the screen fills up a minimum of 30° of your field of vision for a good experience and THX recommends 40°. So the absolute closest you should sit to the TV is like 2.33 meters. If you could put the TV on the short wall and somehow get comfortable seats that sit as flush as possible with the opposite short wall, it could work. It'll be physically impossible to get 30° fov in that small room, but 30° is just the minimum recommended distance. So you'll want your head to be as close to the wall as possible.

  • I will not be putting any consoles or speakers, just the TV and couch, still its not good?

    • +3

Common mistakes: screen too small, mounted too high, using TV speakers for audio.

    • +1

Please get even a cheap sound bar. You won't ever go back to TV speakers.

    • You're going to spend, what, 2K minimum for a 75" OLED screen, and you're going to use the incredibly bad TV speakers?

The room isn't going to be great for acoustics, but still this is nuts.

  • +2

It's not going to burn down or explode, it isn't dangerous.
But lots would say a bigger room is better.
Why don't you try it with your current tv and sofa and see if it is pleasing to you.

  • -1

Not sure why this would be a problem if you have a spare room, TV and couch. My current set up is probably this big.

  • +1

Seriously, what has the internet done to adulting?

Obvious solution- walk into a store, stand 2.5M from a giant TV, and call it from there.

Non-obvious solution- ask total strangers on the internet.

    • +7

      what has the internet done

      Created words like “adulting”…

  • I did it with a similar sized room pre-kids. Projector with an 88" screen, 7.2 surround sound (dedicated processor & separate amps). Treated the walls with blackout fabric. Viewing distance would have only been about 2m on a sort of 2 seater banana lounge thing that HN used to sell (very comfy). Only pulled it all down and sold it when I realised that there was no way I was ever going to have 2-3 hours of alone time to watch movies for at least 15 years once the kids started coming along, but it was awesome. I'd spend at least as much on the audio side of things as the picture.

  • Do whatever you want, it's your media room and money….

I’ve time-stamped the exact spot that I want you to see.

  • -1

Do it. The bigger the TV the better. Add a sound bar and sub at least a sound is just as big an effect for movies. If you can put dark curtains around all walls to absorb both light and sound reflection, you will have a much better result. Won't be great for watching the news or maybe a footy game, but awesome for your next special effects loaded movie. Some big TVs allow you to have smaller viewing windows for things like news of that's important.

  • Merged from Suggestions for Media Room Layout 3mx3m Size

Planning to put 75 inch LED wall mount TV and a samsung Q990C 11.1.4 speaker setup, is this setup okay for a room this small, along with a 3 seater couch?

    • +2

Spend less on a $2,000 soundbar… and more on getting an OLED.

      • -1

Spend less on both and put it towards an extension on the house for a proper media room.

    • +9
      • +2

        Different room….

      • +2

        3mx3m

        Inflation 🤔

        • +2

Got the school ruler out and remeasured.

      • +2

This is exactly the same as his previous post, only his using a different ruler and has added a generic, overmarketed soundbar for a room that's too small. At least the room is now 20cm longer this time.

        Sigh.

        • nah with that extra 20cm i would get a 98 inch tv

          QLED 4K Smart TV - Q80C

      • Op gain 20cm

    • +3

      Sounds perfect. No notes.

    • You may steer toward a QC990C if purchasing a Samsung TV, otherwise there's better value around. I assume there's no dwelling/neighbour issues with owning a sub? Your room is arguably too small to accommodate the rears. Atmos is perhaps overkill.

      • -1

Hii, can you please help me with other soundbar options for a small 3x3m room?

        • Are you an Apple or Android household?

          • @sumyungguy: Android, planning for google TV

            • @Saurabh9808: Have you considered any of the Yamaha models? I had one on trial in my small living room, it sounded great. Gave it to a friend who lives in an open plan apartment with high ceilings, room volume too large, not so good.
              New SR-C30A $249
              Refurb SR-B40 $220

              • @sumyungguy: Are these better than 300-400$ samsung soundbars for the small room?

                • @Saurabh9808: I'd say much better value for similar performance. Soundbars don't need to match your TV brand unless it's a high end model with decent speakers designed to integrate with the audio system (e.g. Samsung, Sony). Otherwise you're just going to turn the TV speakers off and never hear from them again. If you prefer the Samsung aesthetic then go for it. Also consider JBL, Bose, Polk, LG. Make sure you choose one with a sub because in a soundbar/sub setup mids (and LFE) are coming from the sub.

                • @Saurabh9808: Any soundbar is 'good' for a small room.

    • +1

Do Samsung really advertise the soundbar as 11.1.4? Thats absolutely frickin hilarious

    • +2

You should invite us over for a movie and snacks to test it out.

      • +3

With the TV, speakers, and furniture, I'm afraid there is no room for people.

    • +1

Don't ever get more than 2 friends and it'll be fine. Crap, but fine. Who are you looking to impress with your "media room"?

    • +3

Number 1 suggestion for a 3m x 3m media room is to have a door so you can enter the room.

      • +1

Or a manhole and rope ladder

        • I don't think the rope ladder is necessary if the man hole is in the floor . But it would make a nice conversation piece.

          • @altomic:

            nice conversation piece.

Problem is, you'll be talking to yourself in that size room.

    • +1

      3x3 is a little small.
Might of worked if the room was 3.0x3.2

      • +2

OP just needs a third ruler, then the room will be 3.0 x 3.2
