FREE iOS/Android App Tags Drunks, Dangerous Passengers, Inspectors (Free for First 10,000 Users). Normally $1.99

2714

Just launched a new App for tagging Ticket Inspectors and dangerous/drunk passengers on Public Transport called 'Spector'.
Available on both iOS and Android.
Aims to make public transport safer and more enjoyable for commuters.

(Don't worry, I checked with a lawyer and it doesn't break any laws)

On opening the app you will be shown a map displaying any nearby inspectors or dangerous passengers that have been tagged.
If you spot an inspector/danger you can tag an it at your current location and say where you are (eg. Train Station)

Free for the first 10,000 users!

iTunes Link: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id570529566
Android Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apps.guanx…

I worked on this app with my friend's company Guanxi3. You can check out my other apps at http://www.shinyblur.com

Thanks guys. Love to hear feedback about your experiences with the app/the idea.

EDIT: Google play store was still saying $0.99 for a while. Should be saying free now.

I don't buy the "loses money every hour they run trains" bull.

Even if the service doesn't pay for itself, you have to factor in the increased cost of everyone who currently uses PT having to drive instead (road maintenance, more accidents, road rage, carbon dioxide output).

And if it was less expensive, more people would use the service. It would cost me 10% of my daily wages to travel to and from work by public transport (which I would much prefer), but only 5-6% by car, factoring in maintenance and fuel etc.

        • And if it was less expensive, more people would use the service.

We don't want more people using the service during peak time though, the carriages already feel like cattle trucks…

Just cause you don't buy it doesn't make it a legitimate point. Read the annual report if you're so sceptical.

If paper is used up faster, we'll run out sooner and need more so another tree will have to be cut down to make it.

        • +1

Think you may have missed my point.

In very narrow terms the train service is running at a loss, but sometimes a vital service has to be run at a loss because the cost to society in general of not having it may far outweigh the loss it incurs.

If you take those other costs into account, it's not a waste of money to run it a loss. Even if you made public transport in Victoria free to use, it would still be more beneficial to that not having it (and I'm not suggesting that it should be free, mind you).

you must be 12 and not know what this is, i work hard for my money and fork out 60 dollars a week for travel, less then 10% of my pay but these people who call the transit officers "scum" because they catch them doing something illegal are the actual scum who make my ticket cost $60.

Not to mention it's 1 bird missed by 2 stones with this app,I could take a guess that 90% of the people who want to avoid transit officers are also the trouble makers.

Good to see that OzBargain has a conscience. I agree with the sentiments of many. This app is a crap idea - why should those of us who pay for a ticket subsidise the free loaders. Big Neg from me as it goes against the spirit of OzBargain.

Starting to throw insults and personal attacks already? I guess this app has hit your sensitive spot. Someone would have to be very insecure (and perhaps jealous) to be offended by a harmless app like this.

Some ticket inspectors are out to get anyone, even if they have a valid ticket there is always an excuse like "your ticket looks too faded, going to fine you anyway you can sort it out later by appeal". Don't blame people if they want to avoid ticket inspectors.

        • +3

it's not a harmless app if you consider that it basically encourages fare evasion. this app 'could' have significant real-world impact in a very negative manner.

        • @cutebirdy: so if OP made a similar one that is for traffic police, and police… would he get the same kudos?

        • +2

@slowmo, ironic you asked that because on the next page someone has suggested this for RBT so to answer you, YES there are people who would like such an app.

        • @slowmo - traffic police and police are around to ensure the place is safe. Ticket inspectors are not there for safety, they are there to fine as many people as they can, some even take sadistic pleasure in doing so. There's a difference between avoiding police, and avoiding ticket inspectors.

        • not really, no. they're both there to catch people who are doing the wrong thing = breaking the law. if you have a ticket, and you're not putting your feet up on seats, or breaking any other 'rules' for things which people should have commonsense to do regardless, then why worry at all?

  • great idea for an app, but it force closes on launch on my galaxy SII
just released so there will always be bugs, but once i can use it im sure it will be awesome :)

    • Sorry about that, still ironing out a few bugs. Hoping to release an update in the next day. Thanks for trying it out :)

  • +1

I'm not really sure how this is going to work… apart from relying purely on user input - if a train is moving wont it tag the location they are in rather then the tram? Also ticket inspectors rarely stay on a train for more then a stop or two..
Don't get me wrong its impressive you made this but i'm just not sure how it would work

    • apps that rely on user input usually flop out very soon cos people are just not bothered to go into the app, go through the hoops and enter data for other people to see

also app says free for first 10,000 users i dont think this will hit anywhere close to that download mark lol

  • Trying it on my android (a rooted galaxy s2) and the map doesn't load! And I do have internet reception otherwise I wouldn't be able to post this right now.

Anyway I was trying to tag some inspectors that I saw on Anzac parade Kingsford/Kensington opposite unsw at about 1pm. So I'm not sure if they are still there. They were sitting on the bus stop heading city bound.

    • Thanks for letting me know, I've had another person say the same thing so I'll try to fix it and get a patch out in the next day hopefully!

  • Not compatible with Samsung Galaxy S?

    • Yeah, saying not compatible with my Samsung Galaxy Ace

    • yeah, my samsung galaxy tab is pretty much an SGS with a bigger screen, and not showing up on SGT either…

  • +1

    Thanks, just what I need.
Had an inspector an hour ago :( Wish I saw this app to tag

  • +6

    i don't get it.

if people have no problems with not paying for train tickets, why would they pay for your app to begin with?

  • +4

"Aims to make public transport safer and more enjoyable for commuters."

Keeping freeloaders off the trains is a good start to make transport safer. How does this tie in with tagging the train with ticket inspectors whose job it is to catch them? It seems to me the app makes the commute more enjoyable for the minority of passengers who can't be bothered paying for the trip, at the expense of everyone else.

I'm a little surprised Apple approved this app.

    • Apple wouldn't understand more than likely because of the way he has worded it.

    • Apple approves everything, apart from nudity.
Have you seen the Apple App store? So much fake/dummy apps that don't do anything.

    • You can see stress levels shoot up whenever inspectors arrive, I agree that the app makes public transport safer, by avoiding stress.

      • +1

And what…that increase in stress causes you to do something unsafe? Like sticking your head out the window? I mean…really?

        • +1

Stress in general has been proven to shorten a person's life span. That is dangerous enough in my books.

Good idea of pinging where something is happening. But why not use it in a better way?

    1. Tag where you last filled up on petrol - flagging how much petrol was.
    2. Hot traffic spots - even though google navigation kind of does it already.
    3. RBT's - kind of along the lines of transit officers.

Special mention to Celebrity spotting, for those celeb hunters.

    Just some ideas.

      1. There is a site for that called MotorMouth
      2. Google does this quite well also government site called "RTA Live Traffic" which you can use street cameras to see traffic.
      3. Disgusting man, encouraging people to drink and drive just by avoiding RBT's. Disgusting can't believe you even suggested that.
      • +4

fully agree on your point 3. that's abysmal. how about DON'T DUI and not have to worry about where RBTs are? how about DON'T speed and not worry about where speed cameras are?

        • -2

calm yourself down. it was a joke.

    • Thanks for the feedback :) I'm thinking of doing a similar thing to tag the location of wildlife spottings, but celebrity spottings isn't something I'd considered.

      • what about Bargain spotting?

        • Nice idea, location based bargain spotting.. What sort of bargains do you think people would tag?

  • +8

Flip the app - tag fare evaders so inspectors get a heads up.

  • just looks like owner of the app is looking for a bunch of beta testers aka lab rats

you'd have to pay us to input data into your app

  • 10 negs and this is still up. Mods - getting any idea that this shouldn't be here??

    • even if it is a really bad app, its still a freebie.. i guess?

  • HTC HTC Desire HD A9191
This item is not compatible with your device.

    What the?

  • +2

This is wrong on so many levels. why avoid the officers if you've paid for your ticket???
u have nothing to be worried about anyways….

  • +2

Fail app for usability and moral issues raised in comments already.

  • +2

Have to agree, this would only really work as a FREE app, as it relies so much on community feedback.
Extending to things like late trains, and providing comments could make this the next 'twitter-verse' (spector-verse?!) [I should patent that!!]
On a slight downer, here in Melbourne, just installed on the Galaxy S3, and it doesn't seem to load the Map (only displaying the Grid) - hope it isn't mentioned above, as I only breezed over the comments, and didn't spot a reference to an issue. *8v(

    • -1

Don't extend the app to include useless information like late trains, the purpose of the app is to report ticket inspectors, keep it that way.

      • +1

now that almost sounds like a troll.

  • +1

This app is insidious, like everything else this guy has pumped out.

It seeks to both encourage fare evasion, and encourage a measure of irrational fear in your fellow man.
