    Vanilla VISA vs Coles Master?

  • Has anyone been able to pay their Zip balance with these?

    • Would like to know this. Cannot use Prepaid Mastercard, not sure about this Vanila.

  • +1

    Requires Registered Flybuys Card

This will screw your spending requirements for flybuys bonus points promos (eg. 4x $50 for 10k bonus points)

    • So use a burner….

Hey mod please hide this deal until Tuesday mid night otherwise all cards will disappear from shelf… !

    • still will show on the catalogue this Monday..

      • +1

That is fine as Ozbargain more popular than Coles catalogue….! As most bargain hunter are the one who hides card after learning on Ozbargain how someone bought $25,000 worth gift card in last deal …!

Someone did bought card worth $25,000 and did show pictures on Ozbargain… !!!

        • +2

Really? How? I wanna see it.

  • Is there anything likely stopping me from buying these at Coles, then going to Woolworths and spending them on buying Ultimate Gift Cards?

    • You should try it. XD

    • A grumpy attendant.

  • I take it these are visa DEBT cards, not visa CREDIT cards? apparently visa DEBT cards attracts less fees at some joints.

    cheers

    • +2

Neither. Vanilla Visa gift cards are prepaid cards.

The fees you incur when using a Vanilla Visa gift card will depend on how the merchant chooses to handle prepaid cards (if they choose to accept them at all in the first place). For example:

      • Some merchants (e.g. ATO, Virgin Australia) do not have a specific fee for Visa prepaid cards, so the fee that is charged falls under Visa card type (usually debit).

      • Some merchants (e.g. Sniip) apply a separate Visa prepaid card fee. In Sniip’s case, the Visa prepaid fee is higher than the Visa debit fee, but lower than the Visa credit fee.

  • Anyone paid a significant amount of their HECS off with these? Got 40k HECS need to pay off this year

    • Based on rates of inflation it's better off for hecs to index and deduct from repayments of your tax return than pay off hecs in bulk now that the 10% discount has ended.

I was fortunate enough when the discount was 20%

      • Okay, but I need to pay it off their year so looking at what options I do have

        • Why is that?

          • @Poor Ass: For loan purposes

            • @rekke: if a broker or a bank has asked you to to pay off the HECS to increase your borrowing capacity then they are not doing a very good job unless you are really desperate to get that loan approved or maybe settle for a slightly lower borrowing capacity?

think of it this way you have $40k cash asset and $40k HECS liability which will end up to be zero on the books. Once you paid that HECS off, your borrowing capacity might increase a little but it won't be $40k and you have also loss $40k in liquid cash but have paid off the HECS.

              • +1

@Poor Ass: In my situation, paying off the 40k HECS increases my borrowing by significantly more than 40k…

  • Does this usually start in the other states in the following weeks

Has anyone recently used these cards for ATO payments?

  • Will i be able to se these online to pay bills same as giftcards.com.au?

  • has anyone been able to buy these cards from Hurstville coles? I think they take them off the shelfs and don't sell anything

    • +1

they keep it for their F&F…..

    • What time are you going to the store? I've seen the $100 cards but havent been early enough to see the $250.

      • I went yesterday and there is no cards there at hurstville store and coles up next to the station

        • Sounds like people have already hidden them or staff may have taken them off to stop people hiding them or are planning to hold them behind the counter to stop people buying too many or some other reason. Just go at store opening and ask for them if you really want them that much. They cant say they sold out if you are the first customer.

          • @8azinga: they are hidden at the front desk in the second last draw under the cigarettes.

  • Is it accepted at Apple Education online store?

    • +1

just buy apple gift cards with them and load up your apple balance. You can pay with your apple balance on the education store

      • Kinda think about it, it actually doesn't really matter. If I can find them, whether using them to pay for utilities or Apple, still money saved.

  • Hard to find any of these cards now 3 days BEFORE the start of the promo…I wonder why?!

    • +1

      Freezer item

    • +1

I went to three stores already and no cards there . The two stores at Hurstville is a joke

  • +1

Does officework price match this offer

    • -3

yes they do. I have priced matched many times in the past

    • +5

      No.

      • Their Price Beat Guarantee only applies to identical stocked items. I have never seen a Vanilla Visa gift card stocked at Officeworks.

      • Officeworks added Gift Cards as an exclusion to their Price Beat Guarantee around December 2023.

  • +1

Officework states that Gift cards are excluded from Price Beat Guarantee!

  • i am sure this has been asked but I can find the answer :( Is there any issue using these to but TCN cards at Coles or Woolworths ? I wouldn't think so but i remember something about Coles not allowing the master card GC to buy gift cards so not sure if this would also be restricted or is there an issue using split payment when buying giftcards ?

Thinking of getting these then wait for Home GC to be on sale and buy them for use at Good Guys :)

    • In terms of Coles:

      • The fine print of this deal should say Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase any other gift card at Coles.

      • I have not heard recently of anyone reporting on whether the checkout returned an error as soon as they swiped a Vanilla Visa gift card when purchasing a TCN gift card.

      • If you are redeeming over $35 from a Vanilla Visa gift card, the EFTPOS terminal will ask you for a PIN. You need to press Enter (without entering any numbers) at this step, which means you will be forced through the signature verification process; the checkout will print out a small receipt for you to sign, and then a staff member is supposed to compare this signature with the one the back of your Vanilla Visa gift card (and maybe also any ID you may have on you) before they decide whether to approve or reject the redemption from your Vanilla Visa gift card. Considering you are supposed to show the staff member the signature on the back of your gift card, that may cause the staff member to remember the rule I pointed out above and reject the redemption. If a staff member does this, you will need to wait for the funds to be released back onto your Vanilla Visa gift card.

      In terms of Woolworths:

      • A number of staff have mentioned to me over the years that you cannot use any gift cards of any sort to purchase any gift cards at Woolworths.

      • I have not heard recently of anyone reporting on whether the checkout returned an error as soon as they swiped a Vanilla Visa gift card when purchasing a TCN gift card.

      • +2

thanks, i will give it a go and report back if there are any issues :)

  • For this type of gift card, when making a payment does anyone know if you press 'savings' or 'credit'? I recall it's savings?

    • +3

You need to select Credit in Australia, because that is the option you need to select to route a payment through the Visa network.

You would select Savings or Cheque if you were routing a payment through the eftpos network (and this prepaid gift card does not support the eftpos network).

      • So that means they cannot be used at Aus Post to pay ATO as Credit payments are now blocked.
Only option is to use them online via ATO online and Govt Easypay

        • +1

So that means they cannot be used at Aus Post to pay ATO as Credit payments are now blocked.

          Correct.

Additionally, my understanding is that you can only swipe or insert a tap when making a payment to the ATO. I believe the option to tap a card for payments to the ATO has been disabled.

Only option is to use them online via ATO online and Govt Easypay

          Probably.

I am not sure whether there are BPAY bill payment services that would let you send payments to the ATO and use Vanilla Visa gift cards as a payment method. Last time I checked (last year), Sniip would not let me send payments to the ATO from a prepaid card, which included Vanilla Visa gift cards. There are other bill payment services out there (e.g. Yak Pay), but I have no idea whether they also permit this, because I am not eligible to sign up for them.

  • Anyone know if these cards are just as susceptible to hacking as the prepaid Mastercards? I've bought a few of the mastercards in previous offers and always used them up straight away. For this offer I probably won't be able to use them for a few days after purchase and am wondering if it's worth the extra risk.

    • I think these cards are similar to those MasterCard, that are susceptible to hacking.

  • 1st card tried to use on healthfund where I use the Coles giftcards all the time. My payment was declined because: (reason: Exceeds Withdrawal Frequency Limit). I used the same giftcard on Council rates though and it worked.

Card status at 6am (store opening) 0 $100 cards and 12 $250 (i took 5) I scoped out Monday and there were loads of each.

**update - tried again on health fund with a different card and it did work.

  • Nothing in 2 local stores.

When I asked staff, their magic words were "New Stock is locked in backroom but cant get it until the Manager comes".

I know the cards are generally kept in a small cupboard behind where the cards are displayed so what a lame excuse.

  • Same nothing in 2 store as waiting for manager.. !

  • 2 more Coles in western Sydney only had $25 and $400 left and staff rudely said we have nothing else…. Bas***rt … !

    • Same - only $25, $50 and $400

      Which ones did you visit?

Mine was Mount Druitt and Penrith

      • i was at kings langley had no $250 and then other is stanhope garden, but managed to find some at stanhope garden but it would have been finished by now as staff gave me while i was walking out of store.. !!

        • Staff at Stanhope are a pain

  • +1

No stock at miranda and Hurstville

    • Nothing in Parramatta

  • Do we think they hide the stock deliberately?

    • Some do, in the locked cage. I get the impression that they are told to put some out at random times. At least I have observed that for TCN GCs.

Heaps of $100s this morning, but no $250s, so couldn't be bothered.

  • I got no idea but I thought the store opened at 7am and they opened at 6am . Thete was a line up like boarding a air china flight lol

  • -1

Is the 5 giftcards per Flybuys card enforced by the system?

    • It clearly says 5 per account, what make you think they wouldn't enforce?

      • +1

It can say whatever it wants. What matters is how the system has been programmed.

Maybe someone has tried buying a 6th card and has checked if the discount is applied or not.

If I do not get a definitive response before I head to the store, I will give it a go and report back.

        • +2

Just tried - confirming that the max 5 giftcards per Flybuys card is enforced.

  • I get the error message processing the card online through to centrelink . @WookieMonster do you know what it could be ?

Unfortunately we have encountered an error 65 while processing your request. Please contact your financial institution. Please see 'Next steps' to check your contact details are up to date.

    • Do they take paypal? You can add it as a payment method.

      • No they don't take paypal but i used this card in past and paid more then 5,000 worth debt … without issue.

This time i tried 2 cards and both failed. my be centre link stopped accepting this cards as a payment method.. !

dammm wasted so much effort waking up early morning only to face this !!!

    • It looks like error code 65 is something to do with “exceeding credit limit”.

How long after purchasing the gift cards did you try to redeem them? In past deals, I had to wait about 30 minutes before the full gift card balance was available for redemption, although for one of the deals in 2022 (I think), I had to wait 4.5 hours…

Btw, your tag did not work.

      • Yes, that was the reason I got as well but then I added card to paypal and purchased woolworth gift card and it went through.. !!

so it must be that government stopped using this type of gift card ?

        • Do you think that would be the case for ATO too ?

        • It could be that Centrelink has blocked it, but considering the response code was 65, that sounds as though Centrelink was happy to charge your gift card in the first place. If Centrelink actually rejected the card, I would have expected a generic error (e.g. “card not accepted”, “card not allowed”).

It could also be that InComm (the gift card scheme owner) has specifically blocked payments to Centrelink? Who knows…

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thanks, mate. It just went through so must be activation issue as you said earlier.. !!!

  • Yes I found the government isn’t allowing these pre paid cards anymore . I found five cards at kareela there was about 7 or 8 left

    • Government? ATO?

  • for anyone with HSBC 2% cashback the 100 gift card works to be around 6% discount.
you have to purchase 1 card per transaction. the check out lady was kind enough to be patient with me doing this.

$100 gift card = $93.72 ($90 for the card and $5.36 for activation less $1.91 for the cashback) = 6.28%

    • +1

You still lose out compared to buying $250

      $250 gift card = $231.75 ($225 for the card and $6.75 for activation) = 7.3%.

    • just split payment in 3 lots for the $250 to get your activation fee worth

note that that possible will get your card blocked after like 9-10 transactions

  • -3

Before i buy these GCs, looking for confirmation that currently they can be used to pay ATO….(not prev experience )

  • Does anyone know if you can ask for a 'temporary' Flybuys card in store, then use that to purchase 5x $250 cards, then rinse and repeat?

    • I'd be more surprised that you could even find a $250 card, let alone 5 in the first place. Guess you could sign up on the spot if you managed to.

      • +1

Generally where I live, the Coles here are less susceptible to OzBargain raids ;)

        • Discount is attached to register flybuys so I doubt system will apply discount but you can try and let us know… You don't need to ask staff just scan one card and then temp flybuys and then click pay and discount will appear if it is possible.. !
