6% Credit on Coles, Woolworths, Dan Murphy's & BWS Gift Cards + 1% Surcharge @ PayLab via App

121

I can see this is the first deal for PayLab here. They've only recently opened up to consumers (used to be just B2B).

A few things to consider:

  • Unlike cashback places which give you $$ back, PayLab gives you reward credit that can be used to offset/pay for future gift card purchases on the platform
  • The reward credit is actually 6%, but there is a 1% purchase fee when using a credit, debit or Apple/Samsung Pay* which brings down value of the deal to 5% (can anyone get around the surcharge?)
  • Gift Card delivery is instant and the minimum purchase is $35, reward credit is also instant (so if you buy in smaller denominations, you can use the credit sooner)
  • The 6% offer ends 31 December 2024

Also, stackable extra credit see T&Cs here:

  • Get $20 extra credit by spending $100 at Coles, Dan Murphy'sr & BIG W EACH (total $300)
  • Get $30 extra credit by spending $150 at Woolworths, BWS & Kmart EACH (total, $450)
  • Combined gift card purchases are allowed to meet the total spend (ie, multiple transactions in smaller denominations)
  • You can only get each of the extra credits once
  • Extra credit is not instant but "credited to users' Paylab accounts after the promotion period, within 10 business days of 09 January 2025"

Edit,

I originally read this as $100 at EITHER, as the Ts and Cs don't specify each…. however, PayLab on Facebook has confirmed it is EACH…. I'm v sorry!

Just bought $150 Woolies, instant $9 cashback through app and pending $30 from the promo. Thanks OP

    • Does it show a 'pending' amount for you in the app?

      • +1

The 6% back shows instantly, the extra $30 won’t show till up to 10 days after the 9th of Jan, according to Ts and Cs

    • +1

Awesome! It’s like 25% off if you max it like this!

You can also get the Dan Murphy or Coles reward in addition to :)

      • Opps… it's not, see neg comment below….

    • Hey, I wanted to say that I misinterpreted the promo and it wasn't either, but EACH… though the Ts and Cs don't say each, see the negative comment below. I'm sorry!

      • further change the "or" to "and" in the two dot points under "Also stackable credit…."
        That will make it clearer.

  • +4

Tell me if I am reading this wrong, but does it mean that essentially you can never fully cashout because the only way to get your "cashback" is via purchasing more gift cards which means you will instantly have more credit and so on.

I get that you can dwindle it down to 6% of $35, but it's a clever way to keep people in because they will always have about 2 bucks credit left.

Still grateful to OP for posting. I had never heard of it.

    • Yep, it’s a bit confusing hey! Seems to be a new concept on the market, instead of ‘cash back’ they do ‘reward credit’ for future purchases.

    • +1

So you could die without fully cashing out :(

  • Just to clarify, can Woolies GCS be used get a dif GC in store?

    • Haha. This guy knows the unlimited free money hack. Not sure. Please PM me if you figure something out. At some older stores this used to work on other deals, if I’m correct.

      • Can confirm it doesn't work :(

  • +2

By the way the cashback after the fee comes to 4.95% ($150 gift card, $9 cashback, minus the $1.50 fee is $7.50 cashback) :D

Seemingly no way to get around the surcharge as you can only pay via Apple Pay or Mastercard/VISA, both of which have the surcharge

    • My mate knows a guy involved with PayLab and told me about it. If this deal goes well, I’ll get in touch with him and see if we can reduce the fee somehow (PayID?) - they seem like they could be a genuine competitor in the cash-back space… if the 1% fee could work worked around.

      • +1

Your mate screwed you (and us) over 😅 (not your fault obviously)

    • Isn’t this illegal? I thought they must offer at least 1 payment method that doesn’t have a surcharge.

      • +1

        No.

A merchant can choose to surcharge all payment methods, but if they do this, they must display the total cost (including surcharge) as prominently as the cost before surcharge.

  • Does anyone know the normal Coles and Woolworth reward credit rate? Or other stores for that matter? Can't seem to find it on their website and don't really want to sign up if it's not worth it compared to other discounted GC methods.

    • 6% for Coles and Woolworths, BWS and Dan M on promo, usually 3%, which is typically the same rate for everything else. Don’t forget about the 1% fee too.

Does seem to be the best rate going at the moment with the promo. I’m keen to see this deal go off to incentivise PayLab to become a new competitor in the cash-back space.

There is also a $5 bonus for Cafe choice which can be stacked with either bundle 1 or bundle 2.

    So I bought:
    * $100 Coles
    * $100 Cafe Choice
    * $50 Wollies.

On top of the normal cashback should get $55 in bonus.

    • Do you think Cafe Choice is good? What's that for?

Gift card subject to individual merchant acceptance. (Please refer to this table for more information.)

Bottom line, can be used for food and drinks

        • Sweet, will use for my bi-weekly fortune-telling visit.

  • Right, spent $100 on Coles GC and got $6 only, no $20 extra credit. My app notifications say: "Spend at least $100 EACH at selected retailers"… , so it looks like $300 for $20 and $450 for $30 ?

    • I don't think that's right. I agree that the wording of the promo is v confusing, but it does not use the word 'each' in the Ts&Cs and talks of them 'as bundles'.

It even gives an example of "two $50 gift cards to meet the $100 spend requirement is allowed"

      • Exactly, you need to "complete each bundle", not just buy a single gift card.

  • +1

    I hope I'm wrong about this but…..

On the facebook post it says:

    Load up your rewards rocket:
Spend at least $100 EACH at: Coles, Dan Murphy's and Big W = $20 rewards
Spend at least $150 EACH at: Woolworths, BWS and Kmart = $30 rewards

The EACH has me concerned that you have to spend at least $100 on coles gift cards AND $100 dan murphy's gift cards AND $100 on big w gift cards.

EDIT: looks like mallard has beat me to it.

  • +4

This post is misleading; the advertising for the spend X get Y says you have to spend $100 at each retailer, not just 1 of them.

    • Spend at least $100 EACH at: Coles, Dan Murphy's and Big W = $20 rewards
    • Spend at least $150 EACH at: Woolworths, BWS and Kmart = $30 rewards

So you'd have to spend $100 at Coles, DM and BIG W (total $300) to get $20

    • Hmmm… I agree that the wording of the promo is confusing, but it does not use the word 'each' in the Ts&Cs and talks of them 'as bundles', which I took to mean 'either', but that might be the wrong assumption….

It even gives an example of "two $50 gift cards to meet the $100 spend requirement is allowed"

You could be right and that somewhat kills the deal… and was misleading for me… I'll message them to see

    • Yep, you were right…. I'm sorry!

    • This is correct, the Paylab official on Facebook has confirmed, must buy these as "bundles"

      Paylab
Daniel Collins Yes. You have to spend 100$ at each retailer to get 20$ reward. This is in addition to the normal reward you will get at each retailer.

Advise everyone be careful cause this is what found while googling company. But is up to you if willing to take risk. https://www.smartcompany.com.au/startupsmart/paylab-fintech-…

  • Did anybody save a copy of the T&Cs before it was discovered that they were worded incorrectly? It seems they've changed them since.

  • +2

They're now lying about having changed the T&Cs. I would recommend staying away from this company in future.

Paylab: "We have not updated any terms now. The terms mention that you have to spend on all three retailers even thought the word “Each” have not been mentioned."

But they did update point 6 to state that the minimum amount needs to be spent at all retailers in the bundle.

That's not good. Let me see if I can reach out to the company and see if we can get some of them honoured. I really feel if PayLab responds to this well, and perhaps even offers another cracking deal to go with it, they could use Ozbargain to launch the businesses.

      • Second you on that. Thanks

    Hello everyone,

We've noted your concerns and comments here regarding our recent promotions and app functionality. We want to ensure everyone that we are here to help and are keen on making your experience with Paylab as positive and clear as possible. All of the comments are awesome for us to take on board as we try and get better at what we do.

If you have any specific issues or need clarification on how our promotions work, please don't hesitate to reach out directly through our customer service [email protected] and I will make sure we address them to the best of our ability. Apologies for any confusion in the way we have worded the bundle promotion - we were trying something different with this one that, we think, brings some great savings for those who take-up the bundle!

As for the service fee there's not much we can do about that right now unfortunately but we are keen to address some options in the future that can lower or do away with these fees - I don't think we are alone in this regard!

Thank you for choosing Paylab, and we look forward to assisting you!

Best wishes for the Season, Scott from The Paylab Team

Nothing in this PR statement addresses the legitimate concerns about the misleading way that the T&Cs were worded. Could you please let me know if Paylab will honour the promotion as it was originally worded in the T&Cs before the changes (that were lied about), or if Paylab will be able to assist with cancelling the gift cards and issuing refunds, or if I should just contact my bank instead?

      • Shoot us an email and happy to support a refund if the cards haven't been used and apologies once again for any confusion around the T&Cs.

        • I appreciate that, although it would've been much preferable for all involved if this was the response from the get-go. I can see I've been proactively contacted via email so will reply now. I hope that this will be followed through for anyone else who contacts with the same concern. Thank you.

As for the service fee there's not much we can do about that right now

Why not just scrap the fee and adjust the rewards rates to compensate? That way when you advertise say 5% your customers will actually receive 5%.

      • +1

Love this as a differentiation to others and we will definitely consider how we can best state. - e.g. 5% After All Fees ? Many thanks

        • You don't necessarily need to mention any fees, just deduct 1% from all the promoted rewards rates. Instead of 6% credit back with a 1% fee, make it 5% with no fee
