This ticks lots of boxes for me but not for everyone. Particularly not a great gaming option. But for work/programming/crunchyroll this is going to be perfect for me. I added the bigger battery for $10. It has an Arc iGPU which probably is about the same as an AMD 780M (not even probably, see comments) so not a gaming laptop but not incapable at medium 1080p type gaming. You can also save a few bucks taking off the on-site warranty.

Full specs:

  • Processor: Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 155H Processor (E-cores up to 3.80 GHz P-cores up to 4.80 GHz)
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64 (Pro Upgrade $120)
  • Graphic Card: Arc Integrated Graphics
  • Memory: 32 GB LPDDR5X-7467MHz (Soldered)
  • Storage: 1 TB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe Gen4 TLC. There should be a spare 2280 PCIe slot inside based on specs.
  • Display: 16" 2K (2048 x 1280), OLED, Glare, Non-Touch, HDR 500, 100%DCI-P3, 400 nits, 120Hz

  • Battery: 3 Cell Li-Polymer 57Wh. Optional 4 Cell 76Wh upgrade is only $10
  • AC Adapter: / Power Supply 65W USB-C Wall Mount Slim 90% PCC AC Adapter - ANZ
  • Fingerprint Reader: No Fingerprint Reader
  • Keyboard: Grey - English (US)
  • WLAN Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX & Bluetooth® 5.1 or above (5.2 in specsheet).
  • microSD Card Reader
  • No Ethernet
  • HDMI port is 1920x1080@60Hz
  • 2x USB3.2 Gen 1. Monitor support is 4k @60hz
  • 2x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1

  • Weight: Not listed but tech specs say 1.9kg?

I think it's worth comparing to the other similarly priced deal for the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s G4 R7-7840U which I was originally considering but hated the screen and am not comfortable doing DIY. Bit more $ but much better screen. You also don't need to work around the Education store.

    16:10 120Hz OLED. Not bad.

    • +1

At 2K res too. This is tempting for work.

      • it’s only slightly more than 1200p, would be good if it’s 2.2 or 2.4k at 16”

        • Yeah right, I didn't actually read the res. 1280p :-D Doesn't sound as impressive. And a lot of people refer to 1440p as 2K monitors, but the horizontal resolution of them is 2560 so more like 2.5K as I read elsewhere. Got to love resolution "standards".

    • +4

with HDR 500, 100%DCI-P3, 400 nits, this is a great display

  • Do current gen Lenovo laptops still have hinge issues?

    • +1

I did look this up but impossible to say. Anecdotally the hinge issue was isolated to a few specific models and it has been resolved but…

  • +2

    No ethernet. Is that unusual?

    • +10

Not for a slim laptop. You can get a USB-C hub that includes ethernet that should do the job though e.g this one

      • +1

        Ok cheers

    • of you can get a macbook - they have no ports

  • +8

Make sure to upgrade to larger battery for only 10 bucks. Hopefully, that won't make the laptop much heavier!

The Arc IGPU is nowhere near a 780m when the TDP is restricted. You also need to take into consideration that Intel has a long way to go in regards to their graphics drivers due to significant bugs when playing some current, and a lot of older titles.

If you want to compare 780m graphics vs Intel Arc, I noticed there is a YouTube video with side by side comparisons.

    https://youtu.be/G-SYOQ35jQw?si=KRrHSngQbcF5ytzp

For example ARC is 33% slower than the 780m in Cyberpunk with similar settings.

    • Yeah it's not even close

      • +1

I wonder how long before Intel is finally competitive.

    • So can this still do some low/med settings light gaming?

      • If the drivers work and it doesn't randomly crash.

  • +4

Save $16.94 by downgrading the warranty prodecure

    • I assume their warranty isn't worth buying?

      • i didnt buy - just maxing out the ozbargain effect
This was just type of warranty not length - ie you drop at depot vs they come to your house
They are pretty bulletproof so doubt you would even need repairs - during warranty period

        • Ahh good to know!

I'm kind of torn, also looking at
          Yoga Slim 7i (14", Gen 9) with 1tb/32gb for $1770.

  • +1

Isn't it weird that the HDMI port is capped at 1080p?

    • Cost saving shortcut is the only thing that makes any sense. USB-C to HDMI cable should work though

  • +3

Pity there were no deals like this around when I bought my laptop back in Dec 2022. One of the subjects I'm currently doing in TAFE is virtualisation and I need more than the 16GB RAM my current laptop has!

    • +1

Note to any beginners reading, youll also want to get Windows 11 Pro for virtualization

      • +2

        Only if using Hyper-V

    • Is the RAM not upgradable in your current laptop?

      • +1

        No, it's soldered.

    • Hey mate, 32 GB RAM?!

What TAFE course and TAFE subjects are you doing?!

      • The current topic I'm doing is NWK5C2HVS - it's about Hyper-V and vSphere (Virtualization). So far I've got two ESXi servers that need 4GB each, a vCenter which I've managed to cut down to 4GB, a couple of Windows 2019 Servers that I've cut down to 1GB each and a TrueNAS that needs 2GB. That's 16GB on its own, let alone the ~6GB my actual OS itself uses.

With the amount of RAM required and the disk space all these virtual machines require I can see why the course co-ordinators gave the specs they did for students to consider when purchasing hardware.

  • +1

Can you stack with 10% off first purchase? Waiting for my code to come through. Hope deal is still available when code arrives.

    • +1

No. It replaces the MARCH code

      • +2

        Oh well… Thanks…

Just adding 3 yrs warranty for 99 to cover any hinge issues

    • Would still be wary, there are lots of stories on Reddit about Lenovo not willing to repair their hinges when they fail during the warranty period and even crack the screen; hopefully it's a non-issue with these current gen models.

    • Wouldn't ACL cover hinge issues within that timeframe?

      • +4

Its one thing to be right. Another thing entirely to be made right.

    • +1

I am amazed how people view warranty extensions, regardless the concerns of hinges. Over 3 years, having piece of mind costs $ 2.75 per month! It's a no brainer and it's not a HArvey Norman wishy washy extension.

  • +1

    Glad it’s not 250-300nits

  • +5

Only $10 to upgrade from a 65w to 100w charger. Well worth it I think.

  • +2

    This or IdeaPad Pro 5 (16", Gen 9) AMD Ryzen™ 7 8845HS, 16" (2560 x 1600), IPS 350nits 120hz for $1269?
512GB SSD and 16GB though can upgrade memory to 32GB for $1569 total

Worse screen but is Pro better built than Slim? And AMD APU.

    • Probably a better choice unless you care about OLED and battery life. I think both offer pretty good value for money?

    • You can't combine the 32GB option with the IPS option. The 32 GB option forces you to take the OLED screen, which adds $250. So it is $1799 for the specs you listed (with the forced OLED). The IPS resolution is also 1080P while teh OLED option is 2048 x 1280

      • +1

I can on mine, just the 32GB. Still with the IPS screen and integrated Graphics. An extra $300 for the RAM upgrade is steep though.

Will the Intel provide better battery life? The AMD Pro has a slightly bigger battery too (84Wh vs 76Wh)

  • +1

With 76Wh upgrade this is a good work laptop.

  • +6

I just ordered this IdeaPad Pro 5 (16", Gen 9) via Lenovo AU site, came to $1669 with my chosen 2 upgrades, managed to get down to $1589 via chat. Chat has also confirmed it the integrated graphics is 780M which may be the only integrated available with the 8845HS??

  • Added the upgraded battery backlit keyboard and 100w over 65 w charger for just $50 more that’s perfect.

  • any good AMD 14" deals?
don't need a GPU but ideally good RAM and CPU and screen

  • +1

Specs say both of the USB-C ports are 3.2 Gen 1…so no Thunderbolt/USB4.

Looks great apart from that, it's the only thing stopping me from buying :(

    • +1

Take a look at the 8845HS mentioned above. That model has the good IPS and will cover usb4

  • +1

Arrived today. The keyboard layout is cramped and nasty (I will never be OK with squashed arrow keys), but other than that it's a nice machine. Could pass as a MBP in terms of build quality and general appearance. The trackpad and screen are lovely.

    • Hi Mate

I was planning to get one today just wondering how are you liking the laptop

It's just for office work and study. I am looking for long battery life and light weight.

      Thanks

  • So just FWIW, my Ultra 7 Laptop arrived and I was curious how it benchmarked. 3dMark has a reasonable reputation re: making sure vendors don't do specific things to bias. I've compared the world's best 7840HS + 780m result to the world's best Ultra 7 155H Arc as well as the result I got.

Summary? Arc beats the 780m on many of these benchmarks. Does that mean drivers aren't an issue? I have no idea.

    DX12
    DX11
    Vulkan
    Ray Tracing. LOL
