F Amaysim! Never again! Horrible reception. Be warned.

      • Full Optus network as well. Optus have consistently been the fastest 5G network for the past several years per OpenSignal testing. Of course it doesn't have the reach Telstra does, however.

        • +5

Telstra has become quite bad recently. It doesn't work inside of shopping centres for me. Lot's of drop outs on the train.

          • @zealmax: Are you on boost or Telstra ?

            • +2

@JoeBogan: Telstra. It's got to the stage where I have to use mates Optus hotspot to order food at the food court.

Have 2 phones, both with Telstra both have problems.

              • @zealmax: And where may you be zealmax ? That does and can make a big difference either way.

                • +2

@ozhunter68: Sydney metro. Happens in almost all shopping centres and on the T1 line. I never had a problem before the 5G roll out. Yes I have 5G phone.

                  • @zealmax: Yeah, that's bad. I noticed 3g got worse gradually with the 4g rollout also. Planned obsolescence and pushing people towards 5g maybe.

                    • +1

@ozhunter68: I am using 5G, still bad for me.

                      • @zealmax: Oh, even worse. So your 3g, 4g, 5g auto combo still worse than when there was only 3g, 4g. Should not be allowed to happen I reckon. Only reconfigure the frequency and towers in order to improve on what is already existing.

          • @zealmax: Back because I remember this comment. Compared my Optus reception with 2 family members using Boost in a busy shopping centre and I had 5g whilst they both had 4g. Before anyone says Boost isn't Telstra, it's the exact same service.

no such thing as blanket for all! do your due diligence in what signals best in your area!

    • +7

In my own experience, they have the best customer support channel in all MVNOs I've used

  • Where can I find the $165 price tag plz? Not seeing it after clicking the link

    • +2

Looks like it's in the catalogue from this Wednesday 28Feb…page 43
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/catalogue

      • Thanks, somehow the website doesn't let users to view a specific page directly unless they download the PDF file
Update: it is on the page 45 of my local catalogue

        • Hey mate did you manage to buy it yet? Cheers. Is it via woolies? All I can see in the catalogue for this week (tomorrow) is everyday woolies mobile plans? No mention of amaysim.

          • +1

@SES: Nope, I am about to scout it today

            • @Freddies: any luck? is it an instore deal only? still can't the $165 tag, maybe comes on from tomorrow? Cheers

              • +1

@SES: confirm no advertisement in store but checked out at the catalogue price

              • +1

@SES: I didn't seem to find it yesterday but I'll try to ask it tomorrow.

                • @Freddies: thanks, I should go to my local store and pick one before it gets ozbargain'd lol

  • +1

    I bought this today.
Friendly reminder: paying with discounted Woolies gift cards are ok.

    • +5

anyone else can confirm this? was not allowed to use GC earlier with Lebara discounted sims.

      • I bought two different SIMS (Lebara and a Telstra) recently and was NOT able to use "Wish" giftcard for either. The Amaysim (simular to this deal) I got in Sept was the same. Giftcard not permitted.

      • Just bought this an hour ago. 10% off using Everyday Extra, paid with a Woolworth egift card. I had a bag of bread in the order together with the sim FWIW.

    • The monthly 10% off should still work too?

      • It should work. It worked for Vodafone last month.

    • can you confirm that e-gift card can be used to buy the phone sim card?

      • Pretty sure , gift cards cannot buy other cards including sims . Just try !

    • How did you buy it? Can you please share the link or something? 🙏 Cheers

  • +1

Does anyone know the activation expiry?

    • would like to know also

      • Should be activated within 12 months of purchase. Says at the back of the pack. Just picked one up

  • -2

If you don’t need international call, Moose mobile seem to be a better deal. A little more expensive but has more data and 5G.

  • +1

The $165 price looks like it doesn't start till the 28th of Feb. The 1000 points though is valid from 14/2/24 through till 5/3/24.

  • Whats a new customer? New to Woolies or new to Amaysim? I have a prepaid a/c for mum in my name with Amaysim Does that mean if I buy this sim I wont be able to activate this plan?

    • New to Amaysim so just port out and back in.

      • +2

I believe if you activate this sim, it must be for a new number or port in from other telco. You can be an existing customer.

        • This is the correct definition of the incorrect use of the phrase "new customer" in this industry.

    • @glyptothek the others are right, but also wrong.
The correct answer is from @timhn.

You can be an existing customer but adding a new number to your current portfolio. I have 7 under my name so far. Eventually, they expire, you get cracking deals on these 'expired' numbers to tempt you to come back.

  • +1

I also love the amaysim $70 roaming pack, lasts 365 days and you get 9gig and 100min, I only used 3 gig over2 weeks at Xmas in Asia so using it again in May for my next trip, so much better value than other long pre paid offers

    • +2

Travel sims are really easy to use. I have a Travel Sim already and each time I go overseas I just recharge for that country or continent. The company is available 24/7 on whatsapp if I need fast activation.

Recharging is a lot cheaper than buying new travel sim. It was like $8 for 2G per day for 2 weeks recently in KL. I spent less than $70 for 4 weeks in Europe and Asia. Especially when travelling with the fam and everyone wants intl roaming.

9G for $70 is very little tbh

      • +1

What's the brand are you using?

  • +1

Can anyone confirm if you receive texts for free while overseas like Boost does? Cheers

    • -4

You'll need to purchase the international roaming pack. Anything that isn't Telstra based won't be able to use the Wi-Fi Calling function to get SMS + Calls free

      • +4

I'm pretty sure that is not correct. You don't need a roaming pack if you just want to receive SMSs.

    • Yes, you do get the texts for free if you have the overseas network connected…
      But no Wi-Fi calling feature…

    • +6

I can confirm this, and you do not need roaming pack either to receive SMS whilst abroad.

    • Can confirm that you can receive texts for free without international roaming. But not sure if you can connect to calls on VoWifi like Telstra

    • Yes, yes you can.

  • can someone tell me when I have to activate the sims?

    • +1

      Within 12 months of purchase

  • +2

If you end up at the Cabrini Hospital Malvern NO reception inside most part of the hospital.
Friend had boost no issue my Amaysim would not connect had to walk outside.
You would think they have a good reception in a hospital as if you have someone in emergency you can not walk outside to have reception to call someone.

  • Any thoughts on Lebara guys?

Looking that this plan but lots of caveats lol especially when one needs to make international calls on the regular to one of their 'included' countries (India)

    https://www.lebara.com.au/prepaid-plans/long-expiry/

    360 day sim - 80 GB in chunks - $119

talk me out of this lol

    vodafone #umemployed

    • +1

If you don't need the international calls, wait for a Kogan Mobile sale.

From memory, their 120GB yearly plan gets frequently discounted to $100, with very occasional further drops.

Their 200GB gets frequently discounted to around $140.

      300GB drops to aorund $160-180.

      500GB drops to around $180-200.

All 4 plans get 5 or 6 additional days over Lebara and can be renewed for the same value a year later if you monitor Kogan Mobile sales a few weeks ahead of time (make sure the fine print says the code can be used for existing customers as well as new ones).

Kogan Mobile plans can also be purchased from Kogan.com with Kogan gift cards, credits and credit card points. The first 2 have expiry dates, the last one has no expiry date and can be earnt at a rate of 1% if you have a no fee Kogan Black credit card.

I personally purchase a few Kogan Mobile plans every year using the points I've accumulated and discounted gift cards/credits to discount them further than their nominal costs.

      • @SES

If you're still interested, Kogan Mobile currently have a sale on their top two plans, but it will only work out if you have a friend who is also willing to go with Kogan Mobile.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/834437

$270 and $300 for 300 and 500GB respectively, but you get two voucher codes instead of one, so that's half price if you have a friend.

    • Voda are fine if you live in the capital cities. I was with them for 2 years 12 months ago. I'm not with Optus and Telstra (2 sims in same phone) and coverage is just better in some small towns. I would just go cheapest myself.

  • +1

I'm on unlimited data with Felix mobile, whats the fees if you go over data with this?

    • No fees. Your data goes dead. U need to buy more data

  • What is easiest and cheapest way to port in and out? How long to wait to before porting back in?

    • Aldi $5 sim? May be 24hr or just use up your $5 credit.

  • The worst network I've been on by far…stick with boost or Telstra.

    • +2

Can I ask whereabouts you're? I am with boost/Telstra currently and having lots of call drop out and barely get 5g anymore. Has been happening for a while now but now it's got to the point where whenever I dial out it drops out 95% of the time. I see others here reporting the same thing about Telstra/Boost.

      • Ah really…maybe it's just all the networks…I'm in SE Melbourne, about an hour from CBD. I was with boost before switching to amaysim ~7 months ago. Huge difference I've noticed in terms of consistency.

        • haha I'm a suburb past dandy lol, small world but yeah telstra doesn't work or is very choppy where I think you live so yeah it makes sense, a friend of mine did the exact same thing. What's interesting in my case I like 500m from a Telstra tower and never had any issue up until recently.

      • +1

Hi - Sorry to jump on but moved over to boost hoping for better coverage than GOMO(Optus) - they stopped providing their service but with Optus networks had the usual drop outs on the train but everywhere else it was great, i live in the western suburbs - of coz a few malls it would be bad. Moving to boost - itis soo bad even in the CBD say in a level 50 building to download even an app from the app store takes ages and its so slow! Southern cross station is a shocker - my phone doesnt support 5g not sure if thats the case but from what i am reading above - you having 5g is no better? just wondering if you reached out to telstra or boost (whoever you are with) 7?

        • yeah they dont want to ack the issue/fault after being passed around a few reps including Telstra reps. I told them it's not JUST me, ohers having the same issue but they were stuck on it being an isolated to me. Imma reach out to their retention team and see if what they can do, probs nothing so will jump ship.

Use the AUS tower app to confirm you have enough Optus towers/coverage in your vicinity.

    • These broad statements are useless as coverage varies from suburb to suburb, let along city to city

Refer to coverage maps and get the aus phone towers app to see which carrier has towers near you and what bands the towers have.

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.bitbot.…

E.g. In Dubbo, voda has a tower that covers the entire town, but it uses a low speed band so it's borderline unuseable for data. Meanwhile optus and telstra have closer towers and they have more bands.

      • I live 500m away from a Telstra tower and the coverage map says 5G indoors and outdoors but yeah calls drop out constantly. never had an issue up until recently so unsure etf is is going on.

        • That's pretty odd. Maybe there's an issue with that tower that needs to be reported? Might be worth seeing what bands that tower has active and how far out their signal travels

  • +2

Is it ok to buy now and activate a few months later?

    • Yeah, you can activate within 12 months of purchase

  • +1

"New customers only" ? Also can we purchase in advance if our current Amaysim plan expires in 2 months?

  • I would not recommend porting in to Amaysim.
    Never f***ing again.
In Canberra Telstra got really slow data wise so I ported into Amaysim, but my number is not receiving calls or SMS seemingly from other Telstra numbers(banking or Mygov text verifications, personal calls and sms). Issue still persists even after isolation test and sim card replacement. The customer support chat and phone line is a nightmare to deal with, without the physical store.

If opening an account with a new number, it is prob OK as there is no risk of ruining your main number.

    • +2

Unfortunately can happen with any carrier, I would raise a complaint and ask for the number routing to be checked/fixed on your service. TIO as last resort.

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/help/contact/complaints/submit-co…

    • I have both a Telstra and Amaysim sim in my iPhone. Travelling all Australia, not one is really better in my experience. I would just get a $2 sim if somebody is worried.

  • +1

I will recommend AMASIM , I ported in with them yesterday and getting 150MBS speed plus on 4G LTE , I was getting only 20 MBS from my Boost prepaid 4G coverage but If I walk around 25 meter from my home It was around 400MBS on 5G coverage.

  • +1

does anybody know if and when amaysim is going to unlock 5g?

  • New Customers Only… worth hitting up there support and asking for same price?

    • just port out and back in imho

      • how do you port out and back easily? like really easily

        • +1

buy a $5 aldi sim and port out and then port back into Amaysim. make sure all your info like DOB etc are accurate.

          • @SES: thanks. is lebara $5 esim better or worse for the sake of port swap purposes? which has less rego overhead, chance of failure etc?

            • @magnitude: never used a lebara esim but I guess it should be fine.

            • @magnitude: I ported to lebara esim card in like 1m, so it was super fast

              • @Freddies: It's absolutely shit. Now my number is stuck in limbo and the (profanity) had me on hold over an hour, said they'd reply to my email in a couple of hours. Big regret.

            • @magnitude: You could also use a $2 Voda Sim or $2 Lebara fyi

              • @SES: Yeah, in hindsight i should have done that. My number is now stuck in limbo with Lebara. They won't reply to emails or answer the phone

      • Good Point, forgot about that

  • +2

    what’s activation time frame?

    • Within 12 months of purchase

  • Does anyone know which 28 countries are included in their "Unlimited Calls/SMS to 28 Countries" ?
