HP LaserJet M209dwe Mono Laser Printer $123 + Delivery ($0 SYD C&C) @ Toner Masters (Price Beat from $116.85 @ Officeworks)

68

!!! IMPORTANT UPDATE !!!!

!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER !!!!!

After we realised how bad HP is (with help from the OzB community via the comments below) we decided to get a refund from officeworks and get a Brother Printer instead. for more information, please read the comments below.

Hi Ozbargainers, we were looking for new printers for the business and found this deal. We managed to get it down to $116.85 at Officeworks via Price Beat.

One catch we found is that this printer must be connected to the internet and have an HP account to get it working. Also, if you want to use a non-genuine toner cartridge, make sure you opt-out of HP+, otherwise, the printer will be locked to genuine toner cartridges only.

2.9% PayPal surcharge.

Don't support HP's absolutely shoddy printer practices

    • +5

There is no good reason to buy any HP printer now. Their practices are openly hostile to customers and competition. Do not support.

      • Can you share a recommendation around this price? I don't know much about printers, but appreciate the heads up, as I would've taken this deal.

        • +2

I'm partial to Brother as a printer brand these days but I'm certainly no expert. If it was my money, I'd probably just stick with the best model of theirs for the budget, with the usual online sweep for any outlier sales on it.

          • +4

            @MrSparkle: Brother H1210.

Toners are $20 for 1000 sheets.

          • +1

@MrSparkle: I've heard Brother are going to try and go down a similar HP path… but, just keep your updates turned off, and you should be okay. Just make sure you have the option to turn them off, before purchasing!

    • How is HP any more shoddy now than they have ever been?

I mean look, it should be regulated that the cost of printers is in the unit and not the ink. Then we wouldn't be in the bs that we've always been in.

I also saying this knowing they continued to sell the k550dtn despite engineering faults and I had 15 of them… And that's not my only example of their willingness to sell known faulty goods. But again, that's just displaying they have had dodgy business practices since at least 15 years ago

(Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't buy HP either. Just wondering if something new has happened)

HP printers must have an internet connection to function. Requires an account. If you want to scan something it won't if one of the inks is low (that's the big one lately). There's something about genuine only cartridges and also the monthly ink subscription conditions of use I think.

HP printers must have an internet connection to function.

What if you don't have internet?

          • @jv: um, they don't function.

            • -1

@AdModnar: So how will I print the labels for my floppy disks?

              • +2

                @jv: very slowly

              • @jv: I'll sell you my good old Epson LQ-850 which I've still got lying around somewhere. No Internet required!
BYO USB to parallel adapter, or serial if you are feeling adventurous.

I think the most recent is the CEO describing people who buy their products as investments; TechSpot article

if that customer doesn't print enough or doesn't use our supplies, it's a bad investment.

They're not even trying to hide their true intentions anymore. Other customer-centric (/s) quotes:

our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription

you can embed viruses into cartridges, through the cartridge go to the printer, from the printer go to the network, so it can create many more problems

    Don't trust HP. Brother.

    • +2

Yep, Brother is the only brand of printer to buy.

      • Heyyyyyy Brotherrrrrr, do we still believe in one another?

      • +1

Yep, Brother is the only brand of printer to buy.

Nah, I'm happy with my Epson Ecotank…

You can only trust a brother in times like these.

Many issues with HP hardware and software in the past with more than one printer. It's all brother for me now.

You've gotta be kidding. Hard no.

Hi all, thanks for the feedback. We were unaware of the trend with printers, and appreciate the information. We will attempt to get a refund from Officeworks and consider purchasing a Brother printer instead. Additionally, we'll remove this post from Ozbargain. Thank you

    • +12

Maybe leave the post up. It'll help people doing future searches here for printers.

Just so everyone knows, OP also runs a greeting card business and often posts really good deals that usually sell out.

Whilst this isn't the greatest deal ever - per feedback from users - I think they deserve a high five for participating in the community beyond trying to merch their own wares, which is what 99.9% of reps do.

Well done Ambert, and keep posting deals!

Thank you very much @The Judge :)

  • Thanks for the comments.
We are In the market for a laser printer.

Which brother model is the ozb gold standard?

    Thanks

    • See my comment above for this price point

    • Which brother model is the ozb gold standard?

      The light one.

Friends don't let friends buy HP.

  • +6

This is what I love about Ozb community, honest pple trying to help each other out. And if you don't get it right just correct yourself. kudos to @ambert

    • +1

      Thank you :)

  • My Brother printer was a unit, but now I'm using the Epson Workforce and it's pretty good. Recently bought ink from Inkstation and it was soooooo much cheaper than Officeworks that I just print whatever I want now 😂

  • Best printers ever were the dot matrix ones especially the star micronics series. But yeah either Brother or the newer higher end Epsons are good. Avoid HP like the plague.

  • !!! IMPORTANT UPDATE !!!!

!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER !!!!!

    Bargain !!!

    • +1

I like how there are still upvotes on this deal after OP wrote do not buy.

      • Some upvotes are from before that message.
The ones from after are upvoting the warning?

  • I'm kinda tempted to go buy one.
Then return it for refund. But I don't think I really have time to do.
However, if enough people did that it would send a message about this business practice.

  • +2

I used to swear by HP laser printers until one day my NBN went down and couldn’t print without an internet connection. After that I swapped to a Brother MFC-L2750 — great multi-function printer!

  • +1

Print up to 30 pages per minute

They forgot the 1 at the end of that statement.

    1. Unless you have no Internet (connection) or ink subscription.

    • Now I'm conflicted.

  • -1

If they treat their customers like crap imagine how they treat Palestinians

    • Wow, imagine how they treat 'Palestinian' customers!

  • Even brother printers don’t let you scan if ink is low but HP is evil incarnate

    • +1

That sucks! Even my Officejet 8740 doesn't do that. In fact I only keep it around for scanning, because of the ink situation.
