  • This seems very good and I am tempted to pull the trigger but I wish there was an RTINGS review I could look at first, can't seem to find one. Any google detectives out there that can suss out a decent review of it?

    • I just read a review of this model here:
      https://tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/cooler-master-tempest-gp27q

      Seems quite positive.

    • +2

You’ll find plenty of reviews if you search for “Cooler Master GP27Q” rather than the regional model number in the title. The UHD version is GP27U.

Ah yep I see, thanks. I'm seeing a lot of people say you can get lucky or unlucky with these in terms of quality, backlight bleed, dead pixels etc… Isn't that kinda normal for monitors?

        • It's more common than it should be, would just hope CPL has good customer service but I've never personally dealt with them so worth looking into

          • +1

@lookingforadeal7: CPL customer service doesn't really matter, if it has a significant fault the ACL has your back.

It's CPL's responsibility to make sure their goods are of acceptable quality, if they don't like it then they shouldn't sell the monitor.

Absolute worst case scenario you just go through the motions, wait 30 days, do a chargeback, done.

        • https://youtu.be/g0Keem9gEuQ?si=h-OSqK5oij5_wilZ plenty of YouTube reviews on it probably worth sifting through multiple

      • +2

Changed it to this so its easier for others to find

    • for this price..

i don't think you can beat it,or even come close

at the 1199 they wanted, made no sense

      • I think you're getting this one confused with the 4K model, the GP27U. That particular one had a retail price of $1200 at launch, whereas the GP27Q (1440p) model was going for around $800.

  • Just needed G-Sync and I would've bought it

I've been stewing over which monitor to buy for the last few weeks after the immense disappointment that was the Samsung G5 34" ultrawide with it's heinous ghosting and colour wash that I can't fix. Thought about this one but the reviews are just so mixed and I really don't wanna have a monitor that's screwed by firmware issues.

Saw that the old reliable LG 27GP850-B is on sale again and also in stock at JB HiFi in town so I pulled the trigger on that for $479 (-$10 from JB perks voucher!) and will collect it this arvo. I almost bought the LG 27GP850-B from Amazon for $499 a few weeks ago so seeing it now even cheaper, I took it as a sign lmao

Now I just need to offload this Samsung ultrawide on Marketplace and hopefully recoup some of that $399 I spent on it in the first place. Post for $350 and be happy if I get that but with the expectation someone will offer $300 and I'd take that too

    • This will get brighter, and have better HDR highlights.

honeslty for 100 bucks more this is the better by

The LG panels are good, they just have LG tax applied to them, paying 300 bucks more for the logo

      • While true, there are a lot of horror stories out for the CM one vs the LG one. The LG appears tried and true whereas the CM comes across technically better but with significant drawbacks in reality, with firmware issues and panel discrepancy.

      • I saw but no stock in my town whereas JB had stock and I could use the JB perks $10 off voucher

        • Saw that it's been $419 previously which is a really nice price, probably realistically what it should be without the LG logo given this also exists https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827868

          • @lookingforadeal7: Probably but I prefer 27" for 1440p

            • @mojadu: Yeah i find 32 inch and 27 inch models usually end up being the same just due to most people preferring 27-inch, I don't think I could go smaller than 32 again but it took a while getting used to

I've been watching this one since last year, it was around $800 lowest at one point.

People had LOTS of issue with firmware, screens going off and won't come back on unless you full power cycle the monitor, I believe some people had VRR flicker issues and other problems.

Ultimately, I decided it was no go and wanted to wait for the GP2711, but apparently that one is even worse in terms of pure performance. Monitor unboxed had a look at it and apparently the latency was horrible.

Now that this is $600, it's a bit cheaper than before, nah I think I'll just go with an OLED lol.

    • +1

Only issue I have with OLED monitors is that a 27 inch qhd oled is priced the same or more than the 4k LG C3 42 inch on sale

      • You're not wrong, but I guess it's still a pretty niche market at the moment, OLED monitor's still quite new to produce so they'll still demand a premium likely until it becomes more common/competitive.

Also in my case, I'll either buy a new OLED TV or a new OLED monitor, but probably not both, and between the two I'd likely use the monitor a lot more (game and work) so I'll probably just pull the trigger on the upcoming QD-OLEDs 27" 1440p ones.

    • +1

Also if you dive deep into those forums most people's issues have been fixed with a firmware update or other trouble shooting methods

      • Most are fixed I think, but as far as I know (last checked) the power cycle issues haven't been resolved. Unless they recently released a new firmware update.

But the panel and QC overall just seems like such a gamble, you're basically buying, fingers crossed that it'll work. Which is why I said I'd rather go with OLED, and have my gamble there.

  • Anyone know if this supports VRR over HDMI?

Edit: hmm the tftcentral review posted above wrote this:

VRR was supported only when you have adaptive-sync enabled in the monitors OSD because it’s using FreeSync over HDMI (supported for VRR from the Xbox) but not HDMI-VRR as that’s a feature of HDMI 2.1. We do not have access to a PS5 to check if VRR would work from that, but we believe it would not work with FreeSync over HDMI 2.0.

  • Pretty tempting

    • +1

I think the main thing to consider between the two is the contrast ratios, on a normal IPS monitor your blacks are going to be a greyish blue whereas on this monitor the technology will make your blacks pretty close to OLED standard. Than have to consider 4k vs 2k and what frame rates you'd be aiming for with your card and looking at benchmarks for games you play with that res. Both seem like solid monitors though. 100mm x 100mm vesa mount however I've seen people say their 3rd party monitor arm didn't fit so would be worth looking how it actually mounts as from images I can't see where the vesa mount holes are.

        • +1

At 32" I can see that happening if you sit to close but for 27 inch it shouldn't be the case. Kind of like a 4K TV, if you move closer you'll start seeing the pixels.

      • +1

whereas on this monitor the technology will make your blacks pretty close to OLED standard

One caveat worth mentioning is that using local dimming in SDR mode in desktop applications has noticeable 'halo' effect which can be quite annoying depending on the content displayed on-screen. If the monitor had 4x more dimming zones, then this would be greatly reduced. It's not a problem in games or movies, but most people that have this monitor seem to not bother with local dimming in SDR mode when not playing games or movies.
