How does anyone manage to post a deal on this site without mentioning the price anywhere? On the rare occasions where I have posted, the website almost literally flashes at you to put the price in…

EDIT - and the ninja edit goes in.

    • +35

I literally posted, hit edit and within 20 seconds the post was in the title. How does someone manage to complain that fast?

        • +7

Too busy looking at how other posts posted their specs. I think its a bargain.

Better than this deal for example https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830236
Unless you really want that extra CPU power

          • -1

@mavis30551: To add my 2c to the actual deal, I won't neg it but I don't think it is a great deal, these are gaming laptops, so the focus should be on the GPU performance, and 4070 laptops are available for similar money (see e.g. https://www.msy.com.au/product/msi-katana-15-15in-fhd-144hz-…).

That being said, this has a nice OLED screen (not that a mobile 4060 will be able to give it justice when running games), if that is important.

            • +11

              @xyron:

add my 2c to the actual deal

              So $2,149.02 ?

            • +1

@xyron: That is a good deal. you should post it
              .
Looking at reviews though the AMD CPU sips a little less power so that may be important for someone who would double as a study laptop not plugged in.

Also I like the slim form factor (not that its that slim)

              • +2

@mavis30551: I dunno if it is that good a deal either tbh - these laptops always seem to have some kind of compromise, in the case of that MSI model, it's the FHD display (albeit high refresh rate).

                • -2

@xyron: And MSI build quality & quality control is generally bad

              • @mavis30551: Connected to sipping less power is that it is slightly less likely to throttle or reduce the speed of the CPU and GPU due to heat issues.

Although any laptop will throttle much much sooner than a desktop.

            • +1

@xyron: The Lenovo is a much, much better machine than the MSI.

      • +4

just upvoted to cheer you up, keep posting - don' worry about someone with price tag syndrome.

  • -7

    Seems expensive.

    Why is this a bargain?

I have the 3060 version of this. I’d prefer the MacBook for productivity, especially if you have an iPhone. The availability of productivity apps I like better on MacOS. Battery life is definitely much better on the MBP. Only consider switching to this if you would like to game on the side and don’t have a gaming pc, and also if you don’t mind having it plugged in most of the time.

If your primarily purpose for it is for school, I personally would stick to the MacBook.

    • thats helpful thanks.

      • +3

Happy to help. Not sure what the hate was all about.

    • +5

There has never been a 3060 version of the legion slim 5 14", in fact this is the first of its line and was released in Aug 23

      • +1

I have the Legion Slim 7 Gen 6 soz. At the end of the day it's a gaming laptop. And battery life and thermal sucks. The whole point of the statement is he wants a productivity machine that he can use for school. Not a nice gaming laptop.

    • +7

availability of productivity apps I like better on MacOS

MS Office is much better on Windows than on Mac IMO

      • +1

Productivity doesn’t equal office work. A lot of great productivity apps on iOS and iPad have MacOS counterparts but not Windows.

        • Agreed. Not even thinking about office apps lol.

      • +1

i know right , its actually puzzling why it cant just be the same… unless it was some intentional stitchup by MS

    • +8

I'm not sure how you could have had a 3060 version of this laptop, because Lenovo only launched the 14" Legion Slim with Ryzen 7000 and a 4060 in 2023. So I assume your post is just completely incorrect comparison.

This Ryzen 7840 a very powerful CPU, with good on board GPU and AI when you don't need to use the 4060.

      • I will agree with him on one thing, the battery doesn't last. At least not in slim 5. The rest of it is good though the sub pixel layout on this particular OLED doesn't seem as good as the 14" ones on the other Lenovos. It's not bad that bad, just slightly worse IMHO.

      • I have the Legion slim 7. My thoughts on it being a gaming laptop and macs being better for battery life and productivity stands. And still recommend the Macbook M1 Pro for what OP actually needs and wants.

I have the 32GB 1tb version Slim 7 Gen 6 but I still prefer my M1 Macbook Pro 16GB (the 2020 model) for productivity and browsing.

  • -3

    $2,149.00 Legion Slim 5

Is this made in Australia, or is it a foreign Legion?

    • I hear the French foreign Legion is good at taking returns.

  • -4

You feel like the M1 Pro will last 10 years but you want a new laptop? I would hold onto the M1 Pro if I were you. Windows laptops will feel like cheap plastic toy if you're coming from a MacBook. Don't say I didn't warn you.

    • The Surface range is nice, but they’re in MacBook price territory:/

      • fax while being slower than apple's macbooks

    • +1

It doesn't feel like a cheap plastic toy, you need to go a lot cheaper than this. It's not M1 pro polished but it's a nice machine.

I agree with you on why he's bothering or shouldn't be. I don't see point in upgrading the M1 pro to this if he only wants it for study. M1 pro would probably outlast it for usefulness. Pointless upgrade if he doesn't need the extra power.

    • Your soldered-on ssd storage might disagree with your durability claims.

  • +10

The best place to ask questions like this is the forum, instead of making a post with criteria that you have no idea about.

If you want to play games on a laptop under 2kg, this is the best machine to do it, just wait for a cash back offer. This model has been at 2149 since the start of January and is not a deal without cash back.

If gaming performance is not a deciding factor, look elsewhere.

    • +5

I am sure he knew he’ll get a better response here then in forum. You just gave excellent advice just there!!

  • +1

    Good laptop.

  • +4

Pretty sure you can get this laptop for sub $1700 with all the cashback deal stacked, patience is the key

    • I'd agree with that. Wait for 14-16% cashback

    • +4

Be careful with CR. Mine got declined for bullshit reasons they couldnt prove so ended up paying full price. no way to know, even if its tracking can just be declined like that.

      • +2

Same happened to me zzzz. It’s a good laptop though so that made up for it I guess..

      • What was the bullshit reason?

        • Apparently i didnt follow the instructions correctly when ordering and it appeared at Lenovos end as if id ordered directly from them. Horseshit cause i was following their instructions on their site quite methodically as i didnt want to be out of pocket $400…..But ah well they got me well played CR and Lenovo.

    • +1

Yeah i was aiming to get this less than #1.7k why this being posted for $2149 lol

  • +1

Where dem nit brigate at? ;)

  • +9

Hey, first time commenting on this forum but I feel obliged to share my experience.

I have the same exact laptop, bought Oct 2023. Performance is outstanding, pretty noisy if you put it at best performance/turbo mode.

Few bloatware but manageable, form factor is awesome given it's 14" gaming laptop which portability is not an issue at all.

OLED screen is super vivid and everything looks beautiful.

The only downside is that my laptop BLEW UP, I was playing Baldur's Gate 3 and suddenly smoke came out from all the vent. Burnt smell was so horrid.

Lenovo Warranty services was very quick to respond to my emails and queries - they always call and email back within 6 hours and 24 hours at the very latest.

They said that they will be reviewing the damages and let me know if they would replace or refund my purchase. They arranged DHL express shipment to grab my laptop back.

Overall, personally I would use the Legion line again, I truly believe that this is just one bad occasion as most of my friends using the Legion laptops have no complaints whatsoever.

    • How long did the battery last on basic web browsing - video watching off power? (i watch a lot of lectures etc in bed)

      • +1

not bad at all given that it's an AMD processor. However I never really tested it for just general web browsing. I can play Fallout New Vegas at least 2 hours on battery life.

        • +1

So in the end, did you get a replacement or full refund?

          • @inusure: Not sure yet, the laptop was just picked up last week.

    • Did you have any elevation for the fans, interesting that this happened to yours.hoping this won’t happen to mine although it’s good to hear their customer service will replace or refund

      • No, but not sure if that has any impact. I was playing it in an open area on top of hard surface. Nothing is blocking any opening or vents. Free of dust as well as I look after all my devices thoroughly.

        Just bad luck I guess.

  • +4

I feel like this is a good deal, let me know if its not.

    Not a deal

Has already been sub $1.9K twice and extra 16GB RAM is not an additional $250-300

    • +14

and extra 16GB RAM is not $250

      Tell apple that hehe

      • Look Up is right. 16GB is not $250. This is Windows platform laptop not Apple. Not really a deal.

    • Cheapest it has been is $1,853.10 and that's for the 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Considering the RAM is soldered I'd say $300 for 1TB and 32GB RAM is not unreasonable. Could be cheaper? Yes, but it's still a good deal.

  • -1

Don't trade the m1 pro for this, the silicon macbooks crush every windows laptop in all use cases except gaming.

    • +7

You mean when a m2 max struggle to beat a 7940HS, and when there is a far more powerful 7945HX out there?

Please feel free to gobble up apple's false advertising, such as straight up glorifying m2 ultra speeds as proven by LTT, claiming over 3 times the performance (in cherrypicked tests) when its not even a 50% gain (again in their own claimed cherrypicked benchmarks).

The only thing good about macs is if you use apple optimised workload or you want ultra high battery life, anything else? Yeah no.

      • +1

Note that I said "use case", not most powerful. You can find laptops with more powerful CPUs but it's going to weigh more, have 1/3 the battery life, fans that sound like a jet engine, below average speakers, trackpad, etc.

Watched the video - he even concludes that the better laptop is the macbook as it's more power efficient, quieter lol

    • +14

… the silicon macbooks crush every windows laptop in all use cases except gaming.

The only things MacBooks crush are their display ribbon cables, soldered SSD drives and the wallets of their renters

      • Dam you really dislike apple hey

        • +6

Design flaws, design to prevent repair and refusal to economically repair are pretty good reasons to hate any company and their products.

  • +1

How does this laptop stack up against the Acer Nitro 5 RTX 4060 laptop? Is this laptop ideal more for gaming or studying?

    • proabbly this one better build quality and bigger battery and nicer screen

      • +1

True. I got the Acer Nitro 5 and I love everything it has to offer for a good low price but the only complaints I have with it is the screen and the fact that my laptop easily overheats even after restarting windows 11 a few times.

  • +2

Vent: Lenovo is frustrating to deal with at times. Like repeatedly sending email pestering me to register a monitor I bought last month, partly with points after buying a Legion 7. The problem? They don't accept monitors for registration. You put in your serial number to register and it rejects it. There's even the option to add monitors, but you literally can't register them. I tried to tell let their support know and shared screenshots but instead of taking it on board they got rude and kept demanding I send a photo of the box and labels!? You can still look up the warranty, so it's quite literally a case of incompetence designing their system to send emails to ask customers to do something that can't be done and just wastes their time. Then treating a company trying to alert them to a problem extremely rudely.

That said I got $400 off with Shopback and about $183 in points, then used that on a gaming monitor that was also discounted. So while it's not the biggest bargain, I definitely saved some money. And the main reason I go with Lenovo is I've had them do on site work at my house under warranty - again some frustration but at no cost and got the jobs done. Whether I keep buying Lenovo depends on how their newer models compare to the competition and how they treat any warranty issues I have.

As for this machine…you compromise a lot to get the size down. I especially hate soldered memory. If that memory goes bad out of warranty it's going to be expensive enough to fix the thing that it may make more sense ditching it. The other thing is thermals. Smaller machines are inherently harder to cool when CPU and GPU are under load. Then again it's only a 4060 and AMD laptop processors can be quite efficient. So if you're not running demanding games a lot, it might not matter to you.

If slightly larger size is not a big deal I would probably go for this one instead but note it also has half the RAM and storage.
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-pro-series/legion-pro-5-gen-8-(16-inch-amd)/82wmcto1wwau1
so I would spend the extra $69 on the RAM and $49 on storage here setting you back $2,227:
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bun…

    • If memory goes bad out of warranty you can always make them adhere to the Australian Consumer Law…
I did have a Lenovo laptop replaced for free (with a newer and faster model) a year out of warranty as they laptopt just died on me for no reason while it was well into is serviceable life

      • That is usually a lot of effort and very hit or miss.

        • As much effor as claiming any other warranty really and so far all the claims I have had under ACL have been successful. IT's tehere for a reason ans people should know about it and use when needed to prevent companies form being slack with their warranty practices.

          • @not4us: Ok, if you don't realize how lucky you've been getting results just citing ACL, I'm afraid I can't help you. I've fought several battles with various companies, at least one documented here that wasn't warranty but violated ACL. And it was not easy. Large companies sometimes won't care until you get lawyers involved, which is never economical and even then they are slow to pivot. Lots of stories online…look up the Jeep lemon fiasco for example.

            • @syousef: Maybe you are right and I have been very lucky but the pouint was that the ACL is there to help and be used.
The hit and miss argment could also be used for regular warranties for many manufacturers and that still doesn't stop you from claiming when there is an issue.
I think the consumer rights are regualrly abused by corporations mostly because of lack of action from the consumer part so least we can do is use the tools at our disposal.

              • @not4us: When push comes to shove and the companies don't cooperate you will find the consumer rights bodies take a very long time to respond, and you will be waiting generally months and filling in a lot of paperwork and correspondence to get anything resolved. And sometimes the company just won't play ball. There is a good reason a lot of consumers don't bother pursuing their rights: It's often not worth the time and effort.

  • I’ve used Lenovos (was thinkpads) most my working life
My son’s M1 Pro dumps on my recent Lenovo X1 carbon for battery life.
They genuinely get all day for general usage. Amazing
Apples M chips have for the first time gotten me genuinely looking at their machines.

    • I ran the last three generations of x1 carbon as my daily drivers. Great machines but definitely wished the battery life was longer. Got a 15 inch m2 air and its been great. If you just need a laptop for general use and don't care as much about best screen, best keyboard etc, the Mac is a solid proposition.

  • Good laptop for study😊

  • Great laptop, picked it up via a black friday deal and have had it since december with the 32gb ram and 1tb ssd upgrade.

Installed another SSD in it yesterday.

I use it for a mixture of programming and gaming.

It handles my 3 external 1080p 24 inch monitors (they aren't broken, so I'm not upgrading lol) running through a usb c dock well for productivity.

Games pretty well in quiet mode, but it can get very noisy in performance mode. So much so my partner commented on it when I was playing BG3 on the TV with the laptop plugged in.

    One major issue though:

It does not handle charging via usb.

It says it's charing however when it's plugged in via usb c to my dock (180 watt rated) and no power adaptor it has horrible (and I mean completely unusable, can't open anything) performance.

  • Not a study laptop. Ryzen 5/Core i5 + 16GB RAM with inbuilt GPU would be an excellent machine for most study and office (not specialised tech) work purposes.

If your studies involve graphics designing or playing games, then these specs start to make sense.

Good study laptops look like these:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/828055
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827996

  • Does anyone have any issues with the oled screen? It looks and feels a bit fuzzy blurry to me like hard to concentrate and look at on the screen? I use it no provlems with the external monitors and my old laptop so not my eye sight i dont think lol

    • So your new laptop has an OLED screen? Is the laptop this model or a different brand and model?

  • +1

Just because it was been cheaper before doesn't mean this is not a deal…it's usually a few hundred dollars more (not $1000 as Lenovo would like you to believe) and since the RAM is soldered 32GB for this price is pretty good.
I just ordered one and CashRewards tracked it as $150 cashback making it jus below $2000. I don't think there's a similarly specced laptop out there at this price, specially considering it's 14" and with an OLED screen.
I have had MANY Lenovo laptops in the past (personally and for work) and I have to say their warranty and support is one of the best if not the best and that's also something to consider with these things (ASUS and MSI support is abysmal compared).

  • +1

I own this laptop and I can say it is probably the only 14" gaming laptop that is actually worth buying as the other ones are either too expensive for what they offer (ASUS G14, Razer Blade 14) or run Intel which will mean terrible battery life and thermals or both (MSI Stealth 14, Alienware).

  • +1

Have this exact model and spec, edu store login during sales late last year nabbed it for $2050.

Not used it much personally as it's for the missus. But it's decent for sure, and actuality portable compared to other bulky gaming laptops. Display is absolutely incredible. Best I've seen on a laptop.

  • +1

It's now $2089 with new lunar deal

    • Not the same config, that one has a 512GB SSD
