Card has been recently launched, refer to press release here: https://blackhawknetwork.com/au-en/blackhawk-network-bhn-int….

I have not personally used this card before but seems like a decent deal!

  • Fortune Tellers (7996)

    What?

    • ha! that whole category is a hilarious inclusion for a 'cafe' card

There is a little bit of logic to having MCC 7996 covered on a food-related gift card.

The Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual says MCC 7996 is for the following:

Merchants classified with this MCC operate circuses, carnivals, and amusement and theme parks that offer mechanical rides, snacks and food stands, games, animal exhibits, and entertainment, as well as fortune-telling, astrology, mystic, and tarot card-reading services.

I think the intention of the gift card owner (Blackhawk Network) is to allow you to purchase food from a food outlet at a theme park or carnival or fair or fete, because there is a chance the company providing EFTPOS terminals at these events may have accidentally assigned MCC 7996 to a food outlet's EFTPOS terminal (even though it probably should be assigning MCC 5812 or MCC 5814 instead). It is just that the side effect is that you can use a café-related gift card at a fortune teller.

As an aside, Restaurant Choice gift cards (which I guess you would call the cousin of Café Choice gift cards) used to whitelist MCC 7997 (Membership Clubs (Sports, Recreation, Athletic), Country Clubs, and Private Golf Courses). That had the side effect of letting you pay for a gym membership using a restaurant-related gift card…

  • So is this as good as restaurant choice GC?

    • From what I can see it is effectively the same product from the same vendor but with a different brand. Restaurant Choice GC can be used at seemingly an identical list of venues (copied from Restaurant Choice website):

Eating Places and Restaurants (5812), Hotels, Caterers (5811), Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages), Bars,Taverns, Cocktail lounges, Nightclubs and Discotheques (5813) Fast Food Restaurants (5814) Motels & Resorts, Central Merchant (7011), Amusement Parks, Circuses, Carnivals, and Fortune Tellers (7996).
