  • Anybody got any idea of the install price for a ducted system to a single story.. Ballpark?

    • +1

Friend of mine installed ducted system to single storey half a year ago. I dont remember the brand and how much he paid for the unit itself, but total cost was about 13000 for unit+installation. Brisbane.

    • +1

      $10-12k

      • Ouch. Why so expensive to install?

        • +1

Installing ductwork sucks & most people go for splits for this very reason so fewer installers are doing it.

          • @mitt: That is why ductwork (for either heating or cooling purposes) needs to be done when the property is being built.

    • depending on your house size, mate

    • +1

I paid $16k total for my Daikin 16kw. The unit was around $6k when we bought, installation was around $10k.

      • ozbargain rule, get 3 quotes.

        • My personal experience during a big renovation taught me to get more than 3 quotes. Prices were so different and a pretty wide range. I usually get 4-5 quotes!
The quote I got was the second cheapest (only $300 more than the cheapest) as they offered to remove existing evaporative cooling and gas ducted heating included in the price.

  • This isn't even that competitive, have you seen Smart User x TCL's 19kW system? They're selling 3 units for like $2999 when I previously checked, and that's inclusive of the installation.

      Can you share a link?

    • +1 for link

However, I heard they do require to decommission your existing gas ducted as a scheme under VEU though if you do plan on installing with them.

Their ducted system is still underway, once I get a quotation, I'm happy to send a screenshot through dm.

    • You can get the same in Midea. 3 units for 2999 under VEU program.. we green / Planet people (lookup facebook) is doing that.. additional head costs 1000.. with 7 years warranty

      • what the largest size outdoor unit can go under the program? 14kw?

        • +3

Yes 14.. with 5 head support.

The smartuser ones are rebadged TCL(manufactured by) but the units carry smartuser logo.. Midea ones are actual midea units .. also the Midea unit uses R32 as opposed to R410a on TCL

          • @Maverick123: excellent, apart from multi split 3 heads, 3 bedrooms with 3 vents ducted is also $2999 midea?

            • +1

@jjj123: I enquired that for my house.. but ducted one starts 7800.. only the multi split ones are cheaper

              • @Maverick123: so 2999, you get 2 x 2.5kw and 1 x 3.5kw head or 2 x 3.5kw and 1 x 5kw?

                • @jjj123: Heads you can go with any.. 2.5 x 3 or 3.5x3 or even 2.5x2 and 3.5 x 1 or 2.5/3.5/5

                  I am going for 3.5x4 (3999) because I already have a 7.1 at lounge.

                  • @Maverick123: wow, 2 x 5kw and 1 x 3.5kw , still under 14kw , is totally worth for just 3K.

      • Would you have a link to them? Can't find them on google or Facebook

    • this is under Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) scheme?

and do not compare tcl with midea, different brand with the midea much better

      • I've always thought TCL was more prestigious than Midea as they've been in the air conditioning industry for longer and make quite good home appliances.
Midea is a company that is spending hugely on marketing within Australia and it's always known as a cheaper branded product.
I never thought Midea to be more superior?

        • you'd find quite a few companies use Midea as an OEM

        • read my post please :)

Midea has several joint ventures with Carrier and partnered with Toshiba compressor on most mini split products.

Some of Australia (confirmed with ExtraSalf below) air con business work with Midea to design and manufacture their own brands in Midea factory.

Global market share of air con compressor is around 34 per cent (GMCC Compressor).

You may find TCL air con may use Midea GMCC (Toshiba) compressor or Hitachi or own brand.

          • @jjj123: Ahhh, okay. That's really interesting, I'm gonna do more research regarding to this.

      • Ya, It's under (VEU) scheme, a lot of programs under heating and cooling has been permitted through VEU this year and last year, making higher rebates.

I got good experience with Midea. My aircon got error code after 3yrs of '24/7' run in last Dec. I call up Midea and logged a warranty claim. The tech guy show up in 3 days troubleshooting and replace faulty pcb in outdoor unit. To be honest I never expect they respond this fast. I was thinking a Xmas without aircon.

  • Stupid question…..

I have an old ducted. It still works pretty good but it isn’t as cold as it used to be.

Can I replace the outdoor unit and reuse all existing ductwork etc or have I got a bigger issue?

    • Might be worth getting a tech to look at it. May have leaked too much refrigerant. If it's the old refrigerant, you will need to find the right tech who is prepared to top it up for you with the good stuff.

    • Also it depends on the size/diameter of the existing ducting you have in the ceiling.

    • depends on how old, if it is not a R22 system, you can most likely reuse the refrigerant copper pipe and ductwork.

but you can not just replace the outdoor unit, a paired indoor unit is required so they can 'talk' together.

  • Is this an R410a unit?

    • they have both r32 and r410a for cash back

but it looks like only R410a 7/10kw outdoor units are dual fans - this is the thing I like

      • R410a gas is being phased out though because R32 is more efficient

        • double fans outdoor unit is always better than single fan.

  • Can I use my current gas heating ductwork for this?

Thinking of applying the gov rebate as well.

    • you'll have to pull it out. If you want to retain your gas ducted, you will have to firstly check to see if it's an XA model, check that your ductwork has been upsized and which compatible Add-On you can put onto it.

      • So I can't have this unit sit next to the gas heater?

The heater will be decommissioned, as per the requirements of the gov, but not removed if I recall.a

And how do I check if my ductwork is XA? It's all silver foil.

        • if you want the Govt rebates, the gas ducted will have to be removed, proof of it being broken apart and taken to an EPA-registered site…its quite intense these days i suspect because there were a lot of cowboy plumbers who were claiming everything under the sun. Everything is geo-tagged.

na not the ductwork, the label on the heater itself.

          • +1

@ExtraSalt: Right. Funny as the gov-rebate installer who gave me a quote for the air-conditioning said decommissioning is part of the installation price, but disposal will be charged extra.

I assumed that meant disconnecting the ductwork, switching the gas heater off and bob's your uncle

            • @sh4hp: Yeah thought mine would just be capped off. But they are getting more stringent and cut wiring and decomission the heating but dont remove.

            • @sh4hp: Technically speaking the ductwork can stay. Rip out and disposal of that would be charged extra because usually they take up a whole skip and garbo’s charge by volume not weight.

I think you can legally leave it on site and customer would organise their own council pick up but they need to physically “permanently disable” the gas heater. Otherwise they need to take time between jobs to go wait in line at an EPA registered site to dispose of goods..the tip receipt even had to make reference to your address or job number

          • @ExtraSalt: So as long as the gas heater is removed and taken away, the existing ducting can stay in place for the new electric unit to use ?

            • @Nom: Gas taken away, ductwork can stay but you can’t re-use it for ducted AC anyway. Some people have chosen to retain their ducted to claim VEECs leaving the door open to re-install GDH in the future. With AC capacities on single phase properties, many customers lose the ability to heat their whole home at any one time when going from GDH to Ducted AC

    • Just had my midea 14kw installed 2 days ago as part of the rebate (remove gas ducted)
I shopped high and low and no ones willing to do underfloor with the rebate.
Was also told there werent any underfloor models that were compatible as R32 refrigerant wasnt suited for below floor due to flamability.

Ended up going with the ceiling ducts.
Pretty happy with the install. Went with one of the providers listed above

      • How much did it cost you?

        • Just replied below to how much it cost me

      • Yeah I believe manufacturers are working on it but R22 cannot be installed underfloor. It’s highly efficient but dangerous in non-ventilated environments and kinda combustible lol. Ceiling is the way to go anyway as cold air falls

      • May i know how much it cost? Do they install new duct work?

        • New ductwork. Price below on how much it cost

      • Hey mate, how much did it cost you out of pocket? Which provider? Thanks

        • +2

          Sorry for late reply
We green. I had a referral which may have made the price a tiny bit better. I paid around 6.5 with the rebate which i thought was a cracker deal

  • Hello everyone, silly question perhaps , I am based in vic and I have separate ducted heating and evap cooling, can I reuse my ducted cooling for Aircon as well or should I go for split system and keep existing heating and cooling systems?

    • Have a same situation like you, waiting for someone can answer your question😁

@crazyguy let me know your progress if you dont mind, im also based in vic..still thinking about this rebate. While waiting my heatpump hot water to be replace..

  • AFAIK you can’t

  • @FBN ,Can you share or Pm me the installer detail please .I want to put 14kw system too.

  • +1

Hi, anyone can help to give update on their install and share the installer please? I want to put 12kw too. Thanks.

  • Anyone else took up the VEU rebate for aircon installation? Any company that's reliable?
