[Refurb] Apple MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro (2021) 8c/14c 16/512 $2,299 Delivered @ Apple AU

720

update: Silver OOS, Space Grey (link below) still in stock

rejoice me mates, Apple Certified Refurbished has restocked $2299 base MacBook Pro 14's with M1 Pro (8c/14c) 16/512

best value Apple silicon ever, beats similarly configured Airs by having much better screen, speakers, ports, performance (performance gap between M2 and M1 Pro isn't that big, but Pro is actively cooled so is able to run at higher load for longer)

space gray here:

https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/FKGP3X/A/refurbished-1…

I ordered a 16/1TB version of this a month ago for $2539, but haven't seen them in stock since. the only difference between Apple Certified Refurbished and brand new is different box. apple replaces almost everything in those inits, they look and feel brand new.

    Nice.

I picked one up new from Good Guys over Christmas at clearance for $2100 and it’s a beast.

    • +1

wow that was a good deal! was it advertised, was it online, or in store only? I thought I was monitoring prices closely around xmas

  • +3

Macbook Air is coming out March/Apirl… 14 inch of M3 Air which is suppose d to be as powerful without the extra fan..

    • +15

but will it have a miniled panel and 6 speaker setup like pro? also sd card slot gives the ability to expand storage using things like JetDrive Lite (which I did, like 512 GB for about $70) for music library and other stuff you don't need to have on high speed storage - is priceless

also passively cooled is still a downgrade if you intend to push it often

      • +1

had never thought of that as a solution! nice one.

        • yeah just make sure you get the right model so it doesn't stick out. awesome idea of permanent SD card expansion slash port protector

    • +4

I have both and actually prefer Air. Pro feels heavy everytime I use it.

Granted I am not a video editor or power user. Just use as regular laptop for home use. Love the Air + looking fwd to M3 Air
I actually love the passive cooling. It feels like an ipad

      • +1

before I switched to this mbp 14 I had original M1 mba 13, so I totally understand

but I need a laptop for photo and video editing, and mba 13 definitely felt claustrophobic on that screen

I could have gone for mba 15 but similar ram - storage was more expensive than this mbp 14, while having worse screen and speakers etc. so common sense won out

14 mbp is a chonkier boy, but it's totally worth it

      • I was concerned about the weight, but it has been a non-event. Came from air to the pro recently. I think it's more noticeable switching between them otherwise you just used to the weight

    • +4

The MBP will also let you run more than one external screen.

    • Unless things change, only supporting 1 external display is a dealbreaker.

  • +3

    whats the 8c / 14c all about?

edit: its not cents but cores (facepalm)

    • hehehe you made me chuckle .. thanks! :)

    • +23

      whats the 8c / 14c all about?

      Fuel docket.

    • +1

yup 8c CPU 14c GPU. I am happy with performance, did a few video projects (1080p) in iMovie, and use it frequently for photo editing, and the beast quietly deals with anything thrown at it

can imagine those M1 Max options can do it even better, but this was my budget and I don't need very best

  • +3

the only difference between Apple Certified Refurbished and brand new is different box

    I don't think so…

    • +2

I agree with you on this: the main board is not brand new.

but then again, it's the same damn board

      • +2

        Is the battery replaced?

        • Yes it’s brand new.

          • +1

@Magical Sound Shower: really? so all they recycle is the aluminium body?

            • +7

@ChatCPT: I have bought multiple apple refurbs from Apple throughout the years and they have all come with a new battery.

            • +1

@ChatCPT: I am not even sure about that, body on mine was spotless

              • +2

@shabaka: I had one with very light visible scratches on the back and that was directly from Apple as certified refurbished. Luck of the draw really, but the scratches were not enough to bother me given their location.

          • +2

@Magical Sound Shower: wrong, I got a bum battery on a refurbished 12 inch retina from Apple

        • When I got the butterfly keys in my Macbook replaced, it also included a "new" battery as it's all one part.

The "new" battery dropped to below 80% health very quick.

Same has happened to me with iPhone battery replacements.

I think the replacement batteries for older devices have been sitting in storage too long and have a much shorter lifespan.

Not saying it will happen with this laptop…but it's put me off buying refurbished devices with batteries from Apple.

        • mine came with a brand new battery. in the Settings app under Battery health it shows: health is normal, capacity 100%

  • +4

the build quality, screen and battery life on MBPs are unparalleled. Worth the investment if you're a heavy user IMO

    • yeah, and this is cheaper than same config Air M2 13 / 15 even with AOC pricing..

    • -4

How that helps the main use - browsing & playing media on reflective screen (none of my screens other than touch act as mirrors)
but cannot control it like Neuralink?
      I feel $2300 richer :)

  • Excellent deal if this also applies. Extra $240 in your pocket or to sell on classified.

Refurbished products and open-box returns sold ‘as is’ are not eligible for this offer.

  • +1

    This or 7800x3d + 4070ti super build? 🤔

    • MacBook of course. but I have both lol

    • +7

Can't really game too well on a Mac

      • Idk the Apple seems enticing, same price and performs worse than what the 7800x3d on its own would, slower RAM, less storage, no GPU, also it's a refurb for only $2300! Hard to pass up this bargain.

        • +2

It is slightly more portable then this gaming desktop..

          • +2

            @Aureus: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/828921

What about this for less than half the price, brand new, better screen and better CPU?

            • @lookingforadeal7: Well yeah. That is actually a laptop now.

            • @lookingforadeal7: yes and no, the Apple has battery life, pretty much silent, better memory subsystem, better gpu etc.
plus an entirely different operating system

              • +1

@Lonewolf1983: Yeah if battery life is super important than fair enough. Better GPU of course but could get a laptop with same CPU and slap a 4060 in it and still be more than $500+ less brand new than the Mac here. The battery life might be worth the extra $500-1k for some people especially students.

                • +1

@lookingforadeal7: yep depends what you need and there will always be an apple tax on the pricing.
Note that most windows laptops also choke performance wise on battery, doesnt seem to be the case with apple due to the efficiency thing

            • -1

@lookingforadeal7: That was too good to last. If it was 40cm or larger screen (don't like wasted screen next to 2x 4K monitors)

            • @lookingforadeal7: Well, the Mac has way better battery life, runs way cooler, if using it for Davinci Resolve (our main use) and ProRes the Mac is massively faster. The screen on the Acer isn't bad, but is of no use for HDR grading, which is a non-starter for us. The keyboard on the Acer is awful.
Unlike the Acer, the MBP runs at full speed when on battery only, and the integrated Iris XE graphics on the Acer is useless.

If just doing Word and some light photo editing, the Acer would do the job, but it's not a comparable laptop on pretty much any serious work use case.

        • How's the battery life on it and can it fit in a small backpack?

    • Hope you can carry your PC and monitor outside easily and work without power source.

    • +2

      use case? completely different tools.

portability and productivity/adobe suite/video editing etc go the mac,

primarily gaming/3d work/blender/maya etc but still a capable productivity tool with no need for portability get the 7800x3d.

But desktop you'll want to invest in a decent monitor and peripherals etc I don't think you can get far with $2300.

edit: also wouldn't get a 4070ti super, I'd get the regular 4070ti for $500 less. If you have the budget for 4070ti super you can get a regular 4080 which are on sale for the same price.

    • +3

Both - My devices are a PC(5800X3D/3070) and an MBA. Both are great devices for their respective uses.

    • This one

      • +2

        Well, of course Tim

  • +4

    There's a lot of "ifs" here but…

If another 8% cashback promo event happens
and they allow MBP M3 to be included again
and it happens before gift card offer expires
and you value the Apple gift card as cash equivalent / sell in classifieds
and you have stocked up on Apple gift cards through a method like this (where you value the respective rewards points as cash equivalent)

…then the equivalent M3 model would come to $2481 according to @tc423 fantastic spreadsheet

    • I can't remember why, but I thought m3 (non pro) mbp 14 is to be avoided

      • The example (s)he listed was for 14" M3 Pro 11C/14G 18GB RAM 512GB storage

        • Sorry yep was a bit vague there when I just said "equivalent", should have clarified it as M3 pro. Cant edit the comment now unfortunately.

          • @tobinm: ahh makes sense. well still a lot of legwork for someone who values their time a lot.

            • @shabaka: All good, yeah I still upvoted your deal because it's available right now.
Just posted FYI for anyone not in a rush because I'd been keeping an eye on the prices of various hardware since the Apple Education promo started.

      • 8GB of RAM on a "Pro" laptop as the base model perhaps?

        • doesn't it also have lower ram bandwidth and some codec downgrades

      • I can't remember why, but I thought m3 (non pro) mbp 14 is to be avoided

Only supports one external monitor. Absolute joke.

        • Agreed, one monitor support is a joke.

There are workarounds e.g. using the right dock but still annoying.

This is a good website about the problem and solutions: https://m1displays.com/

          • @nickeveli: Just my 2c, i have a 2021 14" Macbook Pro M1 CTO (32GB/512GB) and run 2 extended screens + laptop screen using this Ugreen Displaylink dock with standard ASUS 27" 1080p monitors fine.

UGREEN USB C Docking Station, 9-in-1 Dual 4K@60hz Extended PD Dock for MacBook, 2 DP & 2 HDMI Ports, 10 Gbps USB C and USB-A Data, 100W PD Charging, Gigabit Ethernet for macOS, Windows

            • @HyperZ: Thanks mate, helps to have a personal review with these things.

Do you reckon $184 is a good price for it?

    • That’s the bargain I got my M3P

  • I got one in 2023. Awesome machine. Screen and sound are amazing. Also I can finally play Civ6 with barely a whisper from the fans

    • +2

best laptop I have ever had, and I've gone through at least 3 dozen windows laptops (incl premium and gaming) in the last few years before trying Macbook end of 2023 and switching over for good

      • +1

What do you do with laptops that you have gone through 36+ laptops in a few years? Do you expect this MacBook to last longer than a few months?

        • +1

well it's a long story kinda

first of all I used to be laptop technician, and a lot went through my hands just like that. corporate units too (Lenovo, Dell Latitude etc).

haven't touched Macs since 2010 and dismissed them as expensive toys which they were back then

then COVID hit, and GPU prices went through the roof, it became cheaper to get gaming laptops as opposed to building desktops, so I went through a dozen of those. wasn't happy about thermals, or screens, or mux or whatever, was changing them like gloves

then became interested in photography and started looking for good editing machine, most of laptops just were useless for that. uncalibrated screens, not lasting more than couple hours on single charge

and then I tried M1 mba, and it blew me away. I could do photo editing on a calibrated panel out of the box, it was super quick and lasted whole day! Windows laptops stopped existing for me that day.

then I returned mba as it was just a trial run, and got this mbp 14, end of story. super happy with it, intend to keep it till it falls apart

  • Can you trade-in apple devices for refurbished?

    • I believe so, yes

      • Thanks!

    • When you buy a refurb there is no option to trade in your old device unfortunately.

You can trade it in the normal way at any time through Apple but you only receive Apple gift cards.

      https://www.apple.com/au/shop/trade-in

      • +1

        Thankyou!

  • +2

Sorry guys isnt MBP 14 inch M3 better? Only 200 dollars more

    • That model is only 8gb, Apple will charge you an extra $1k for the extra 8gb RAM.

      • I see that's why…

        • -1

Yeah it's also base M3 version and not pro version. Looks like M1 pro chip should still be better than M3 base. Just another tech company with consuming naming schemes and deceiving generational performance boosts.

      • Apple will charge you an extra $1k for the extra 8gb RAM.

        $259

  • +3

very tempted, such a shame that it's only got 16GB ram though. would be interested in a M1 Max with 32GB or 64GB of ram, best I can find is used on eBay for $4300, which is insanity compared to this pricing wise.

    • +1

      yea i am after 32GB

      • +4

I did find this https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/G15GLX/A/refurbished-1… same model as above just with 10 cores, 32GB and for $3109.

      • We will be upgrading our M1 64GB/1TB MBP laptops later this year to Studios, and will be putting them up for sale. Turns out they never left the desks at work, so we are going with the Studio Ultras to replace them.

    • +1

For what it's worth, I consider myself as a "heavy" user. Software Engineer - I have a virtual machine running in the background + multiple docker instances + IDE + tons of browser tabs going at the same time.

I have the 16GB and memory management on Macs is insanely good. This is just my experience as someone who relies on this machine as a contractor software engineer.

      • Thats fair, my main usecase is multiple virtual machines. I have a 8GB RAM MacBook Air and it struggles, hence I use my windows workstation for anything heavy. Maybe a new M3 Pro 18GB might work.

      • +1

Using design software and graphics/video editing quickly depletes the RAM like nothing.
16GB is just enough but I am willing to pay a reasonable amount more as it will feel like it gives a different computing experience.
I have the 8GB mini and there were often times due to my use habits, I would need to close pages and apps.

      • What browser are you using out of curiosity?

        • Firefox is what I have been using for as long as I can remember. I fire up Safari and Chrome to check for compatibility in certain cases.

          • @samuria: I see, fair enough. I use Edge but it’s become such a bloated mess over the past couple of years.

        • interchange between brave, arc, safari and firefox

          • @compound: What do you think is the most lightweight browser out of those? Edge has really gone downhill the past year or so.

  • Just need another apple GC 20x woolies/coles deal

  • Not sure this is much of a bargain anymore. Same spec refurbs were selling for the same price about a year ago. I would expect to get the M2 version for this price now.

    • well it's apple pricing for you

how bout this perspective: it's still cheaper than refurb M2 air 15 with same ram and storage. but is tons better

      • Yeah from that perspective it's not bad. Still, it's amazing how apple can maintain their prices. If this was some windows laptop it would have a huge markdown. You pay for quality I suppose (MBP 16 M1 Max owner)

        • The price jump from M2 to M3 was also bad.
