Wondering if Anyone Has Any Sleep-Improving Tea Suggestions?

Hey all, used to use a brand of teabag called "Red Seal's Sweet Dream" blend… but unfortunately run out of that.
Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of tea that helps them sleep at night, as strange as that may sound.
Cheers.

    Chamomile?

I also like Pukka night time.

I had a few English Tea Shop sleepy me which were OK, IIRC. I think it contained valerian root.

Those seem nice. Thank you Ihfree.

      ^ this also,
      - Stare ~10mins at sunrise+ sunset.
      - Workout.
      - Go to bed & wake up roughly at the same time.
      - Keep your bedroom dark + cold.
      - Reishi mushroom + glycine + magnesium 30mins BEFORE bedtime.

These are the things that I do anyway. Research and understand circadian rhythm.

@frewer: True! It's a pity to see that hardly anyone here has captured the good rays..Haha!..Good on you mate!

      • +1
      • Thank you for the advice Frewer. It seems well researched.

        • +1

Np, I forgot to mention no artificial blue light (phone, tv tablet etc ) at least 1hr before bed either. I use f.lux on my PC. Everything is well researched ( for example Systematic review of light exposure impact on human circadian rhythm ) and proven for 1000s years.

          • @frewer: OMFG I LOVE IT WHEN FLUX CHANGES MY SCREEN!!

          • @frewer: Thank you Frewer, could I ask for some articles about f.lux?
It seems quite interesting. Will download and install "f.lux".

            • +1

@violatrees2: I dont have any articles for f.lux. Basically, it reduces the blue light AND dim my monitor screen brightness's to lower than candle's light. Not the best ( no light source at all ), not the worst, I have to work late T_T.

I also set my monitor's brightness & contrast to the lowest.

            • +1

@violatrees2: F.Lux was my go to until I found that Windows has an inbuilt version
              https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/set-your-display…

If you find that your computer slows down or crashes more when you use some programs with it on, you may need to disable it when using them.

        • Stare ~10mins at sunrise+ sunset. WHATEVER YOU DO…… DO NOT DO THIS AT ALL…

unless your OK with damaged vision, increased risk of eye cancer

        • Workout.
        • Go to bed & wake up roughly at the same time.
        • Keep your bedroom dark + cold.

Are all good + don't eat anything 6 hours before bed.

I find adding a touch of honey, a touch of ginger and a half glass of bourbon does the trick.

    The tea is silent.

      Noice.

Though note, alcohol does mess with your sleep quality even if it helps you get to sleep faster.

    • +16

I agree. Brew a cup of mehmeh tea leaves extracted at 9:48pm at exactly 90ºC for 1:28 minutes. Then add a single drop and a half of albino camel milk…. followed by throwing that all out and having jack daniels for dinner.

I’m more of a jw gold man these days but I can get on board with the sentiment

  • I know someone that takes melatonin in various forms to help them sleep. Readily available in the US but seems not here. Maybe GP prescription required?

    • It’s available over the counter for over 55s and needs a prescription for anyone under.
Over 55s also can get higher dosages then those prescribed for younger people.

From personal experience, its not a big game changer.
Probably on par with a sleepy tea.

      • +12

Hell no from me, melatonin is the best thing ever for a shift worker. 5mg of melatonin and 30 minutes later I'm good. iHerb will hook you up with cheap melatonin with no script.

        • +1

Didn’t work for me doing rolling shifts, but different people different results.
          Glad it works for ya!

        • +1

iHerb is great for this, our doctor told us to use that rather than compound pharmacy prescription for our son. Works a treat.

        • +3

In a 2017 study of 31 OTC melatonin supplements in the USA, melatonin content was found to range from −83% to +478% of the labelled content and eight supplements were contaminated with serotonin. I'd suggest sourcing the Australian products or asking a compounding pharmacy.

          • @sumyungguy: That sounds bad but if you know the below it might not sound as scary.

Melatonin optimal dose is 300mg, very few companies sell this low of a dose. Therefore if you are buying 1g or 3g doses it probably doesn't matter very much if it's inaccurate, as you are over consuming anyway.

Serotonin is a biosynthetic precursor of melatonin, so I doubt it would be particularly harmful if consumed in small quantities.

        • Same. Also if I wake up during the night, I can easily go back to sleep.

        • yep, 1+ melatonin and 1 + iherb.

I have ADHD and struggle to get to sleep, i take it 2 out of 3 nights unless i have done significant physical exercise that day (40km return bike ride to work or heavy gym for example).

When travelling for work i have it almost every day. I used to have trimazapan for sleeping for airplane and time zone adjustment while it was way more effective the next day i was hazy for most of the morning.

I have 5mg hybrid (fast & slow coatings), saying that next purchase we will get 2mg and just take two on flights as most nights i only take half a tablet.

          • @NopeNopeNope: I used to take the 5mg slow release ones but I found I was still out of it a bit when I woke up, especially if I only had 5-6 hours sleep. Now I just take the 5mg normal ones and I wake up feeling pretty good.

    Just Rooibos African Tea Bags
    https://www.coles.com.au/product/just-rooibos-african-tea-ba…
By addressing stress and anxiety, Rooibos can aid those struggling to get enough rest. The specific stress hormone that Rooibos targets is cortisol. The lower the levels of cortisol in the body, the higher the likelihood of uninterrupted sleep and this is exactly why Rooibos is such a good idea to drink before bedtime.

I actually highly rate the tea, doesn’t do anything for me relaxation wise because I’m usually wired on 400-600mg caffeine most days… still a nice one to sip on a cold night though.

If I drink tea, I make sure it's at least 2 hours before bed as it makes me have to use the bathroom. Probably not the same for everyone else, but just something to be aware of if you have the same experience.

I'm a pretty heavy sleeper, but if I have any food (especially chocolate or something with sugar) then I find it hard to sleep.

A glass of wine for me always does the trick.

    • +1

it makes me have to use the bathroom

      • up to 12-inch long

Seems like a great product to get excited about

Tart cherry juice is a source of melatonin.

    • how much required to actually achieve an effect? i feel like drinking like..a glass of tart juice probably is not that relaxing

      • +1

Montmorency tart cherry juice. In the study I read online the participants drank one serving (250mL) in the morning between 8 and 10 am and one serving in the evening 1–2 hours before bedtime. Indeed not an inexpensive product but may appeal to some.

    • This is doing the rounds on tiktok "sleepy girl mocktail". Tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and passionfruit sodaly.

  • +3

I have this lovely tea called Ambien…

IMO I find the process the most relaxing bit, doesn't really matter what tea it is (so long as it doesn't have caffeine). Make a cup of tea, put on some comfy slippers, maybe some toast with peanut butter on it, sip it under a blankey until I'm ready to go to bed.

Then throw on some kind of sleep headphones, a sleep meditation thing (I bought a lifetime sub to Calm at some point, I've never heard the end of the Mandy Moore sleep story) and I'm gone, doesn't matter how much caffeine/stress I've been through.

    • +2

I used to work shiftwork back in the day (2005-2012) - 12 hours dayshift, 2 days off … 12 hours nightshift, 2 nights off .. ETC … so, I'm well accustomed to Ambien.

Used to be great to "get to sleep" … but found that had little/to-no REM sleep (dreams) … it essentially knocked me out + then woke up feeling 100% refreshed.
These days … you would be very hard to find a DR to prescribe Ambien (due to misuse back around 2010-2015).

If you do have a (progressive) DR there is another drug … which is generally prescribed these days - FIFO workers commonly use it (won't say name of drug - as I don't want to promote it).

  • +2

San Pedro tea helps with dreams…

  • +1

As to tea … "sleepytime tea" … my dad (in his 70's) takes this daily … within 15 mins of drinking it … he is close to falling asleep … "Green tea" == also historically been proven to help with falling asleep.

Other than that … milk has also been said to aid with sleep.
A big glass of milo/milk == what we used to have close to bed when younger.

  • +1

    T2 peppermint or sleep tight.

Else i find 3-4 magnesium pills and 2 natures own "sleep easy" knock me out. If you get diarrhoea maybe back it off 1 magnesium pill. Don't sleep/underestimate it, studies have shown it's almost as, if not moreso effective than anti-anxiety medication.

If i have anxiety i actually can fall asleep (this is coming from 10 years of anxiety)
If i'm really tired this makes me feel like i've had an additional 2-3 hours of sleep in the same timeframe (better quality of sleep and dreams that are extremely vivid) - sign that the body is undergoing a significant amount of REM sleep.

After multiple years of difficulty sleeping this is my tried and tested method.

    • +1

not moreso effective than anti-anxiety medication.

      magnesium pill

      takes 10

        Your toilet would be destroyed.

        Love it

        • +1

would it be the magnesium though or the extra large serve of chicken vindaloo and 6 cans of XXXX

    • If you get diarrhoea maybe back it off 1 magnesium pill.

What magnesium are you taking? Because this can change depending on the type of magnesium supplement. Magnesium glycinate helps with sleep and shouldn't cause as many stomach issues compared to something like magnesium oxide or chloride which can help with constipation.

Unless they're eating magnesium rich foods like leafy greens, almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds etc. on the daily it's likely they're not getting their RDI.

    • Apparently magnesium and calcium metabolise better in combination. https://www.betteryourhealth.com/naturalvitality/blog/the-be….

    G&T

  • As with all those that recommended iHerb for melatonin, I can 100% agree. Pharmacy won’t sell melatonin to you unless it’s on script. Even then, it’s max 5mg, but you need to be a child or elderly to get a script. Useless. If you want over the counter try Restavit. Otherwise, I purchase 25mg melatonin from iHerb and take it at 7pm each night then goodnight Charlie by 10pm. Unfortunately in my experience and not through lack of trying, unless your tea is dosed, there’s no tea that will put you to sleep. Best of luck friend 💜

    • +1

Damn, 25mg? 3mg knocks me out with magnesium chelate

      • Yes mate, 25mg and I’m still tossing and turning hours later. The joys of having ADHD and a brain that doesn’t switch off. I really wish I could rely on magnesium but all variants of it cause me chronic gut cramping and diarrhea as I have malabsorption issues. The body is a funny thing and it’s wild how we are all so very different.

        • The body is a funny thing and it’s wild how we are all so very different.

It's damage. Look back, join the dots, understand, then move forward.

          • @mrdean: Yes I’m trying, with the help of a naturopath and psychologist 👍

            • @cheriemoore666: I feel for you. I'm currently going through 3 months of:
              - Lightheadedness/dizzy, like vision delayed
              - Forehead frontal sinus pressure/pain
              - Eyes feel heavy, slow, tired, sometimes a dull pain, increased light sensitivity and floaters

It has screwed me mentally, so I hope we find a way. I found the Headspace and Dare apps to help. They're a great combo.

  • Sleepytime tea..with the teddy bear on the box. At woolies.

Valerian tea is deeply relaxing and will make you sleep, use with discretion it's pretty powerful. Used for anxiety.

    • Valerian root extract in capsules can be bought fairly cheap at chemist warehouse, used it for stress/anxiety, take it 30 mins before bed and you'll feel heavily sedated and want to fall asleep, the next morning you feel like you just woke from a deep sleep and the day seems a little more relaxed.

I typically take it if I know the following day is going to be difficult to manage (maybe once a month ~), unsure on what it's like long-term with daily use though.

    "Sleep-Improving Tea Suggestions?"

    Here's a tip …
AVOID TEA AT BED TIME COZ IT CONTAINS CAFFEINE … A STIMULANT!

    • +8

Most herbal teas don't contain it.

Also, homeopaths use coffea as one remedy for insomnia. Ah, the wonder & intelligence of nature. It's all there.

    • A coffee puts me to sleep, your body ignores it after a few days of usage in my experience.

      • I have had the experience in the past, I wonder if its actually beneficial or if placebo + routine is just a hell of a drug..

    • Most teas provide a calming effect and are marketed towards sleep specifically because they don't have caffeine.

    • +1

To be fair to Gekov, the definition of tea is a "hot drink made by infusing the dried crushed leaves of the tea plant in boiling water", whether it be green, black, or white.

Everything else falls under the "tisane" definition.

  • Ginger and lemon grass is my favourite, my replacement for coffee. A generous dab of honey and I sleep like a rock, although never had a problem with sleep.

  • +1

The Red Seal's Sweet Dream did it work for you? If it did its still available.

    • Yes, personally I found it to be surprisingly helpful at feeling like I got a "full night's sleep" when I woke up aswell as helping me fall asleep around 5 minutes earlier.

  • Why tea? Every booze can guarantee a good sleep :)

    • +1

I dont drink personally, but perhaps the reason ihfree said above?

Though note, alcohol does mess with your sleep quality even if it helps you get to sleep faster.

      • I wouldn't drink to help yourself sleep, sleep quality aside, it's just bad for your health to be doing it routinely like that.
Give CBD a whirl, see if that helps, works for my sister that suffers from insomnia.
I feel like Tea is just a placebo.

    • +1

Every booze can guarantee a good sleep :)

      Sleep, but not good sleep.

      • Every time I have any alcohol, even if the quantity is tiny (<0.5%) I find myself napping in the afternoon for about 7-10 days. After this, i no longer need to have naps

  • Celestial Seasonings tea, the ones with the bears on the box. This tea is very good to make you sleepy.

    Melatonin is another option.

Lettuce or cabbage tea also makes you sleepy, boil the lettuce and drink the water.

  • Highly recommend melatonin.
iHerb sells them for reasonable prices.

You can wake up a bit drowsy though FYI.

    • Try the Blackmore range first, then rotate with similar products
      Use Quality magnesium fizzers!

  • +2

    Queen Victoria Sleep
    Twinings Sleep+
add some honey if needed, then brush teeth!
    Magnesium,
rotate with: Blackmores Stress and Sleep if you can still find it

reduce blue light on ALL screens!

    • +1

Can attest to brushing teeth, once you create that habit your sleep hygiene improves massively.

      • +1

Honey can do both, calm you down or give you extra energy.
NEVER put sugar into sleep tea. Find the sweet spot for honey, enough to calm not too much to raise your energy.
I only use honey once every 2 weeks or so and rotate the other remedies.
