It’s very difficult to get a slots to fly into Sydney.
Bonza’s plan is to fly into smaller airports and fly routes Qantas and virgin don’t.
The problem with new airlines trying to break into Sydney market is the big airlines will drop fares to stifle any profitability in the new airline, then when it fails, jack the price back up.
I’ve flown with Bonza and it was a pleasant experience.
They canceled 140 odd flights in December mainly due to a new plane having a delay on its paperwork.

The 19 % cancellation rate seems high but they only have 6 planes.

Virgin cancelled around 900 flights in December
Qantas around 700 flights as a comparison
      Jetstar 440
It’s amazing what a few clickbait articles will do to public opinion.

FWIW I've flown six return trips with Bonza (Melbourne - Gladstone QLD) and, low cost aside, having a direct flight vs having to change in Brisbane with Qantas/Virgin is a game changer. It saves hours in travel not having to land, change planes and take off again. For those of us travelling for business, we would not bat an eyelid if they doubled the cost of that route. I've never had any delays or baggage issues. Likewise half a dozen colleagues at my office.

Having said that, I understand it's a bit of Russian roulette. With one flight to/from Gladstone-Melb on Tuesday and one on Friday, if flight crew are sick or whatever and the flight is cancelled - you're stuffed. Travelling for business I can quickly book a very expensive Qantas/Virgin ticket and get home, but I understand that's not an option to many.

I've had the same experience, my closest airport is regional, and having an airline offer interstate direct services is amazing. No driving four hours to pay horrendous parking prices at a major city airport. Where the major airlines do offer flights to regional areas, they are often 10x the cost of flying with Bonza. If their routes cover where you want to get to, I think its worth the teething issues.

Their on time and cancellation performance was actually better than Virgin and Qantas before the recent issues getting new planes certified.

I hope they start Perth - Sydney and Perth - Melbourne routes purely so prices go down across the industry. Qantas and Virgin both charge insane $$$ for transnational flights.

No flights from SA. Too bad!

    • That sucks. Radelaide rocks!

    • I was visiting friends in regional SA, and ended up flying back to QLD from Mildura, which was an hour closer than going to Adelaide. So could be an option depending on where you are. Hopefully as their fleet grows, ADL will be added!

People talk about being disappointed by this airline.

I've taken the plunge for 2 tickets, as Mrs Chalmers is used to be being disappointed.

Maybe she can see the Northern Lights on your next trip?

    Cash flow generation 👀

  • They don't do WA.

More competition is always good. Keep it coming Bonza.

Flown multiple times on the Albury to Sunshine Coast route. We have never had a great priced flight direct to Queensland before.
Flights have been sensational. Brand new planes. Great simple service onboard when ordering with the app. Flights have always been on time or even 10 mins early and so cheap. Regional accessibility is so great for the people in those places and not paying hundreds of dollars with Qantas.
Also great for the economies of the towns they operate from and it brings in more visitors to the area.
Some routes seem to be having issues which sucks, especially with new planes that they haven’t been able to deploy due to delays (but still selling tickets in the hope they are ready).
It depends which route on whether it’s likely to be a higher chance of a cancellation. There hasn’t been one yet on Albury to Sunshine Coast (touch wood 😂).

    • The Flair 737s are based on the Gold Coast, so unlikely to find them on the ABX-MCY route.

I booked flights with these crooks then they removed the route cancelling our flight 3 days later it took over a month to get funds back and multiple complaints and follow ups to get action… Pathetic nonexistent customer service.

    Good Luck to you….

Nah they will cancel you and you will be paying expensive to get the new flight. Not worth it, for both money and stress.

    • -1

And your point, same with Virgin, a $200 flight becomes $1000 after cancellation.

      • +1

At least VA can put you on their next flight. Could be somewhere between 2 hours - 24 hours. My flight with Bonza is next 2 days.

        • @AnyFurtherDiscount - got to start somewhere with your fleet! As they get more planes, they'll be able to add more flights to their schedule.

      • Virgin will put you on the next flight, usually same day or worst next day, Bonza don’t have that option

Terrible way of trying to book - just an App ! They make it too difficult, i just gave up.

    • @Gmac61 - you can book via many local travel agents.

  • I don't understand the necessity of using a mobile app for booking - why not just use a webpage that is both sufficient and efficient.

  • Purchased Bonza tickets 6 times.
    - 3 delayed 8+ hours
    - 2 cancelled flights (both cancelled ~12 hours prior)
    - 1 on time
Out of pocket thousands of dollars due to Bonza.

Might be ok for pensioners or people who don't have a strict schedule, but buyer beware.
    Fly REX instead.

How does one find the $49 dollar flights on the app

  • +1

Fact: Qantas cancelled 28 times more flights than Bonza.
Fact: You’re more likely to have a Qantas flight cancelled.

Qantas cancelled 651 flights in November.
    Bonza cancelled 23 in November.

It’s easy to get data to tell whatever story you want to create a good headline.

  • I tried to book Gold coast to Melbourne and it's not $49 each. Every seat MUST be purchased at a cost of $12 or $7 or $25. There's no such thing as I'll take any seat for free you will pay. You cannot continue with the booking until you have chosen which price you are going to pay for a seat and this is deceptive dishonest marketing, so I stopped right there. Obviously there was going to be more to come and it was going to be a return flight. I'm all for supporting new businesses but not when they lie. Oh I am sorry There were four seats free and all were taken, booked already, four seats in the ENTIRE plane. I guess that's how they think they can get away with it.

No, you can choose not to pre select a seat and get a random allocation on check in. Pretty simple stuff in this day and age. Have you not booked a Jetstar, Virgin Lite or Rex promo fare recently?

    • @Harry Xing, as @Food says, you can skip the seat (and bag) selection and not pay extra for a seat. I've done that on numerous Bonza flights. They allocate you a seat when you check in.

      • Select 'Select fare' under "Flight only" - Carry on bag (8kg included).

Then rather then selecting a seat, go to 'Add bags' and you can confirm that you'll skip the seat selection.
