Need to be free before anyone will give it a go

    • +7

Even if free its not worth the risk or hassle.

      • +9

It is if you live in one of the regional areas they service. Tamworth - Melbourne return for $98 is incredible.

        • +16

It's not the price… It's the last minute cancellation

          • +2

@Chocobros: Haven't had a flight cancelled yet. Have you?

            • +4

@crc32: Yes they cancelled my flight but put me on another one. Luckily this second one wasn't cancelled. Many cancellations in the days before and after my flight and the stress genuinely wasn't worth it.

Had they have cancelled without a suitable alternative would've been far more pricey.

In fairness to them the actual flight part was good and the staff down to earth.

              • +8

@Chocobros: I've had far more trouble with Jetstar cancelling flights recently. Amongst our family the worst we've had in many flights to and from Tamworth with Bonza is a 3 hour delay. I reckon most of the people in this thread bagging this deal have never booked a Bonza flight.

                • +4

@crc32: I flew December 2023 and after a quick read I think that was the worst month for cancellations at just under 20%. Apparently down to just under 2% this month.

Might not be so bad a deal 🤔

                  • +4

@Chocobros: I was supposed to fly in December. The frustrating thing was even after an article appeared on news.com.au a week before my trip saying they didn’t have enough planes and would cancel their Avalon to Gold Coast flights they insisted they would operate it and wouldn’t give a me refund until they officially cancelled it only 1 day before.

I was lucky that I gambled correctly that customer service was lying and was able to book a Jetstar flight in advance so I wasn’t scrambling at the last minute.

But to lie to customers like that is despicable.

                • @crc32: It is not just their imagination. Bonza and Jetstar have a terrible history of cancellations.

These (profanity) (profanity) (profanity) (profanity) airlines need to be regulated.

                  • +1

@prodrome: Jetstar's cancellation rate is typically within one percent of Qantas.

Bonza is bad, but that's somewhat to be expected from a new airline. If you can afford to be flexible, it's worth supporting them. It'll make all flights better/cheaper in the long run.

                    • +2

@nigel deborah: They're all terrible by international standards because they can. I have a particular hatred for the way Jetstar deal with cancellations by going out of their way to be rude and obnoxious.

When Jetstar cancelled a flight after hours and hours of delays in Cairns they'd didn't say sorry. They called the cops to make sure no one made a peep about it.

                      • @prodrome: They can partially/mostly because of lack of competition (soft government regulation doesn't help).

They called the cops on you?

                        • @nigel deborah: lol no. They cancelled a full flight after seven hours of delays and would have to put us up in a hotel…. rather than just announce it nicely, they called in a bunch of cops to scare the crap out of their passengers.

                          … probably because Jetstar caused a riot there in 2014 - https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2344363

    • @beigehornet - over 750,000 passengers have flown Bonza already. They are excellent - and will only get better if they continue to get support, so can add more planes, staff and routes!

Why do I need to download an app first to book a flight? F that.

    • +2

Too hard basket. How can a business operate like this?

    • Yeah I also think it’s a bit of a barrier and haven’t done it yet. But it’s been their business model from day one. I think they need to advertise their flight prices so people will know before they need to install the app.

    • +12

99% of all apps could just be web based. Hate this app trend.

      • +1

99% of apps were Web based. For the most part I refuse to use apps that have a Web based equivalent.

    • +1

The surprising thing is the app is so terrible after downloading it. Bonza is owned by a massive US low cost airline company so I assumed they’d just rebrand whatever app they were using over there and bring it here. By doing this I thought they’d have a quality app with heaps of features that would make the experience booking fast and simple.

Instead their app is a wrapper around a poorly functioning website where the chat feature (which is the only way to contact them) barely works and with the most bare bones feature set possible.

    • You can also book through travel agents if you don't want to go direct with the app (which will be a little cheaper.)

  • +7

    Prepare for 200,000 disappointed people.

    • +3

I’ll let you know in June.

    • 750,000 have already flown with them! They are great!

    • +6

It's not where it's registered, it's just a domain privacy service, I think it's owned by GoDaddy. Pretty common, it means nothing.

        • +17

Are you smoking crack? Their head office is in Marcoola at the Sunshine Coast Airport. It's an airline not a dodgy app scam.

            REDACTED FOR PRIVACY

          • @tromboc: How do you know that the office is in Marcoola has something to do with this website?

            • +1

@Ozzster: Cause within a single click on the front page on the bonza site they very clearly state in terms of use…

Bonza means Bonza Aviation Pty Ltd (ACN 653 309 909) a company incorporated under the laws
of Australia, with a place of business at 3 Friendship Avenue, Marcoola, QLD 4564

    • +2

You aren't putting your details in on their website, they don't accept website bookings, via app only. Nothing scammy about it.
Pretty easy to find their location (tip, Sunny Coast).
Most people know it's a legitimate businesses with another airline in Canada called Flare 🤣

        • +6

You’re not as smart as you think you are lol

        • +3

Yet me along with all my family and friends have booked via the Bonza app, this very app, and taken said flights with no issues and have never been scammed, not once.
You're just sounding paranoid at this point, we all know Bonza is a legitimate business and so is this app, the negative reviews are not to do with it being a "scammy app", it's about service and other things you'd expect from a budget airline (no call centre etc).
Perhaps take the tinfoil hat off.

          • -6

@SimAus007: You have practical experience with them, I don't. How do I know that they are legit without giving them money first?

    • +1

This is a great of example of "tell us you don't know how the internet works without telling us how the internet works" 😂

  • No flights from Brisbane. Wonder if it is worth taking the train to Gold Coast airport.

    • +2

Haha well it would definitely be in the true ozbargainer spirit…

    • Just take the train to your ultimate destination. Arrive nice and relaxed.

    • +1

You'll have to wait for them to build the train to the airport first… Or train then tram then bus…

    • I believe they have more planes based at Sunshine Coast airport, so that's another option (if the destination is flown from there.)

If going by public transport, you can get the train to Landsborough, a bus to Maroochydore [Bus] Station, then a bus directly to Sunshine Coast Airport.

  • One way ticket to hell or heaven?

    • Hell obviously!

  • +1

no flights to Hobart or Sydney, unfortunate, the only places I gotta go.

  • +8

No thank you. If you think Qantas/Jetstar is bad, Bonza is worse. In December they cancelled a whopping 20% of flights.

    • +2

Just flew to Gold Coast return to Melbourne with Bonza. Best flight and no baggage checks or weight restrictions with carry on luggage.

    • -1

They cancelled gold coast to Darwin route in Dec as another plane hit their plane. Pretty sure it was a one off.

      • +5

I thought it was because they assumed they could use Flair’s planes and crew on their AOC, and CASA disagreed…

    • +3

Actually, other than December, they beat Qantas and Jetstar. Take a look further at their history for the last 12 months.
It was a one off as one plane was waiting CASA approval which was delayed by 2 weeks.

    • How many did Qantas/Jetstar cancel? Got any figures to back this up?

      • +1

        https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

Bonza recorded the highest percentage of cancellations at 19.4 per cent during the month, followed by Skytans at 9.0 per cent, Virgin Australia at 7.7 per cent, Jetstar at 5.5 per cent, QantasLink at 4.3 per cent, Qantas at 2.7 per cent, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 2.6 per cent, and Rex Airlines at 0.6 per cent.

        • Thanks, appreciate that. It looks like the reason was CASA approval so it’s a bit unusual.

        • +1

What is doesn’t tell you is how many flights in total. What’s the percentage of? Of course Bonza is going to be higher than all the other airlines, as they have less flights in total compared to the other airlines. With a total of 5 planes, of course if one plane is out of action, then they either need to cancel or work into their timetable to recover the other flights with the remaining aircraft available.

The way the media portray Bonza as being the airline with the highest cancellation rate without backing it up with cancelled vs total is deceiving.
When we need competition in the domestic market, this doesn’t help.

I’ve flown 3 flights with Bonza since their inception and they have been absolutely amazing and will continue to support them and I hope the rest of Australia gives them a fair go.

          • +2

            @SShannonAU:

@SShannonAU - I 100% agree!! I flew with them 7 times last year, and again last weekend. They are excellent!

            • @enthusiast: I actually just flew with them a few hours ago (so my 4th flight, and nabbed the ticket during this sale), from MEL to OOL, onboard one their aircraft wet leased from Flair Airlines in Canada.

Aircraft departed on time as scheduled, arrived on time into OOL, Canadian crew were absolutely amazing, so friendly and welcoming.
food ordered via the app and delivered to your seat so you aren’t having to wait for the cart to come down the aisle.

What a great experience for the Flair crew as well, being able to come work in Australia and at the same time seeing the amazing sights and scenery that we have.

    • Just sharing my thoughts here. Airlines always have cancelled flights, a percentage of fights that get cancelled is due to not intended to fly, it's to do with gate slots at airports. This make airlines max out their slots or lose them, this results in cancelled flights. Once again we are the ones who suffer.

    • @j0hnd0e - this was due to delays with CASA approvals with new aircraft they are loaning from Canada. As they grow their fleet they will be more reliable!

  • +5

Got to ask yourself if you want to fly on a 737 MAX. Newer than anything else you'll fly on domestically, but doors may come off.

    • +3

At least it'll sound funny when they hit the ground.

      Because, you know, they boeing

    • Virgin use 737 Max and have more on order..

    • +2

Sounds like a bucket list item.

    • +2

Isn't that the 737 Max 9s? Thought we don't have them in Australia, only the 8s.

    • door plug

    • @CheapBrah - these Max 8's don't have the door plugs that the Alaskan 737 Max 9 had.

  • +1

Got my flights cancelled in December, the first one after check in. Makes it costly to get another flight last minute and then it took more than a month for the refund, buyer beware

  • -2

Just happy they don’t fly to Sydney so I don’t have to consider them at all

    • +4

You're happy there's less competition in the market so the major airlines can charge whatever prices they please? That's some Einstein level thinking right there.

  • +5

And as the plane crashed down,
He thought, “Well, wasn’t this a bargain?”

    • +1

      Gotta make it worth $49!

  • Be like Tiger……..copious amounts of flight cancellations and delays. You get what you pay for is what I always say. Good Luck!!!

    • +1

Not quite true in Qantas' case these days. You only pay for Alan's bonus and don't get much in return.

  • Please update title [app only]

  • +22

A lot of snark in the comments.

Surely a new airline feeling it out (with a few teething issues included) would be welcome to improve competition in a market that doesn’t have much choice or price competitiveness??

Especially if the actually fly some decent regional routes instead of the usual double leg Wherever > Capital > Wherever scenario.

Domestic flight competition could do with all the support we can give it.

Am I missing something regarding reputation, ownership, etc?

In fairness I have NO sympathy for requiring an app download to book, is that actually the case?

    • if they actually fly some decent regional routes

Which, given the cancellation history, is a very big IF

Competition is good… but they've got to at least meet the standard set by the competition to be considered 'competitive'.

    • +3

The cancellations in December were as a result of aircraft delays. Whilst they shouldn't of booked the tickets without the planes i have been monitoring the flights from Melbourne airport daily for 2 weeks and they have not had one cancellation.

      https://www.melbourneairport.com.au/airline/bonza

    • Stupid name, stupid livery, not a fan of the 737-8, I hate their “bogan airline” schtick, stupid booking system, and their parent company is as dodgy as hell.

    • +1

its entirely the app for me. utterly rediculous business model

    • I agree best thing for all consumers is greater competition.
There is a practical reason for downloading the app as it becomes your boarding pass then it’s also needed onboard, when in the air, it becomes entertainment portal, live map and the food and beverage ordering device.

      So true, @xdirex!!

Don't we want more affordable domestic fare pricing? And not getting shafted if you have to buy a ticket close to when the flight departs? On Bonza, if seats are available, you won't be paying through the roof.

In fairness I have NO sympathy for requiring an app download to book, is that actually the case?

I'm not a fan of the app, but it's the one option they have and maintain - which covers booking, boarding passes, in air entertainment, menu ordering (the latter can be done via a web page onboard the plane, when connected to the plane WiFi)

You can also book at many travel agents around Australia if you don't want to use the app. You'll just have their service fees added.

      • Agreed and I appreciate your response. In the meantime I have downloaded the app it’s fine, I had no idea it had the additional entertainment/menu functionality.

I do think they’d be removing a point of friction if they had website bookings, but what I can see works well.

We need competition. Bring on the regional routes. 👍

Only a 20% cancellation rate and a 71% delay rate this month according to the ABS LMAO

    Just not worth the effort.

  • do they even fly to and from sydney
