    Must resist.

    Already got an RG35XX, R36S and RGB30 :D

I don't think this will offer much over what I already have.

    Nice price though

    • +3

I see you and raise you all them 3 plus these M17, R35s, Miyoo Mini+, Retroid Pocket 3+, Sf2000 and a couple of hacked Psps and 3DS. Yeah way too many I know and actually will get rid of a few of these.

      • +2

Haha yeah I only got into retro handhelds when I got an RG35XX from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/806079 3 months ago

Now I have the aforementioned 3 plus an Analogue Pocket! Not to meantion the countless Game Boys, DSs, 3DSs, PSPs and Vitas. My handheld drawer is overflowing

      • Do you have a favourite one? I've been wanting to pick one up, but there's so many to choose from.

Looking to play GB, GBA and SNES mostly. DS and N64 would be nice too.

        • +2

I really like the R36S, it's great value at around $60 AUD. The RGB30 is nice as well, but costs considerably more

          • @chromium: Is there one that plays psx or PSP "flawlessly"?

            • @maverickjohn: Most of them play PSX well. The R36S is nice for PSX because it has analogue sticks. PSP is trickier, I don't think any of these cheap ones play it super well, better off getting an actual PSP and modding it :)

              • @chromium: I have a PSP but it won't turn on. I still have all my cartridges but would rather emulate I think.
If worst comes to worst I'll try and source a psp3000

                • @maverickjohn: Yeah i have a og psp1000 and two psp2000s. The aftermarket batteries that you never seem to last very long especially if you store them away.

                  • @habib23q: Have a 1000 and 2000, same fate for both.

                    • @maverickjohn: Yeah there great devices tho. I've had mine since the ps3 days and they have alot of games on them ahem lol

                • +1

                  @maverickjohn: Try battery mod.https://youtu.be/59pkf1CXKWQ

Don't bother with third party battery, there all terrible

                  • @Bretttick: I got an Ostent from Amazon for my PSP 1000 and it wasn't terrible. I get around 4 hours out of it.

                  • @Bretttick: I actually haven't had problems with the batteries initially. It's just when you dont charge them for a while they don't seem to work. Atm all my psps are packed away. I've known about these battery mods for years. But useful information nontheless for others on here.

            • @maverickjohn: For flawless performance you really have to pay more. Besides the retroid pocket 3+ or 4 that's just come out you can get the Anbernic rg405v but that's alot more expensive.

                • @maverickjohn: Yeah it is more expensive but then again after this price point your basically moving upto larger devices like the steamdeck and odin etc

                  • @habib23q: Do you think $200 is bordering on too much based on the feature set you get?
I guess I just want a PSP without getting a PSP lol

                    • @maverickjohn: Thats actually not AUD it's USD. It's about $320 and over here upto around $400 depending on where you buy from and current exchange rate at the time.

                    • @maverickjohn: Retroid Pocket 3+ works very well for PSP. I mostly bought it to be a PSP upgrade for my 2000, with slightly larger and sharper screen (4.7") and ability to 3x upscale the games I've been playing

Retroid Pocket 2S should handle it well too, but the 4:3 screen is not ideal for PSP

            • @maverickjohn: RG35XX H.

          • @chromium: These two are my picks as well as the Miyoo Mini+ or even the Rg35xx if you can get them cheaper. The + version here thats for sale isnt a bad price tho. But for the price there's better options out there.

I have alot of these handhelds in a aliexpress list and just check them to see when there on sale.

    • you had me at must

    • of all the RGxxxx, which one do you recommend for my first? I only have a 2DSXL/3DS, have never gone into the open world handheld retro game consoles.

  • This, or the Miyoo Mini+? It's been a difficult decision for me to make - has anyone got any thoughts on the two?

    • +2

It's worth watching this to make your own decision.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIdTcgI24YA

He goes through the specs, pricing, features etc.. It's good to know what each one offers for your own needs.

I have the miyoo mini v2, miyoo mini + and R36S
Have contemplating on getting the RG35XX +

You can never have one too many handhelds.

      • If it's between the miyoo mini+ or the RG35XX +, then i'll probably pick the miyoo mini+ for the d-pad and buttons being super smooth and i like the ease of use of Onion OS. My kids can just grab it to pick their games and play it. It's kid friendly. Don't really need to play PS1, PSP or N64 so happy to stick with the mini+. But if you want to play them then you'll need more power and going for the RG35XX + is the better choice

      • Actually you can. See above lol

When you pass 10 or so and alot are overlapping you start to think why. Me personally i like to tinker and set them up along with all the other devices i have and move on hahaha.

        • +1

that's exactly what I do. Set them up nicely and move onto the next one lol

        • +2

You can never stop at one because there's always better one that comes out and you'll end up purchasing them to your collection.
Yes there'll be some that's outdated and no longer become a favourite but during the time they came out and you used it, it was some good moments until it goes into the drawers lol

Also i think i spend more time tinkering with it than playing the thing haha

          • @iamtezr: Yeah very true. I also forgot i have a woody rg351v which was my first modern but retro game style handheld i bought a few years back. Mind you i had an og gb and lynx back in the day and everything since at one time or another.

      • Thanks for sharing the link. I watched but getting more confused about what i really want.
should i just get RG35XX + (but it doesnt have the joystick).. thinking to play GB/ GBC, GBA, up to PS1.

        • You’ll want joysticks for PSX, otherwise go for it

  • Old one played these systems fine. What about PSP and N64 and maybe even DC?

    • It can play those systems but there aren't any thumbsticks. There's a horizontal form factor version, the RG35XX H, which has thumbsticks and has the same specs essentially.

But both devices don't have good custom firmware yet like GarlicOS in the old one, which could change at some point.

  • Always tempted, I can read from the gentleman here it’s a slippery slope, so I sooth myself and say I’ll save on multiple ones and get a steam deck.
But do any of these have any kind of support for multiplayer?

    • +1

The Miyoo mini+ and RG35xx+ both have WiFi so you can play multiplayer

    • +2

In terms of local multiplayer (no internet)… I have a powkiddy x55 (about $117 from powkiddy website) and it runs Jelos. Lots of these devices can run jelos as well. Jelos has net play functionality which allows you to have one device as a host, and other devices as a client so you can have all devices playing the same game multiplayer mode.

Retro Game Corps video on this https://youtu.be/YrUac9TIrWo?si=HeXl249WOlfVfRL_

  • They just released the RG35XX H. H for horizontal and thumbsticks.

The R36S with it's gameboy body is painful for systems that use the shoulder buttons often.

  • So i'd be playing this on the stock OS until garlic is available for the plus model, correct?

  • I’ve been looking at getting a retro handheld for a while now and my kids have just decided they want “a gameboy” so convinced them to save for one. Seems to be pros and cons all over the place then a new one comes out or something else goes on sale.

Any advice on solid 1 or 2 models for couple of boys 6-9 (plus me when they are not looking). Want something that has simple and kid friendly OS (happy to mod OS), sturdy, and can play heaps of games but n64 would be the limit, if that.

    TIA.

Get an R36S for them each. Dirt cheap, runs N64/PSX (on ArkOS). Buttons aren't great and shoulder/triggers are terrible to use, but as long as you stay retro game focused (4:3 ratio screen) it's a winner.

Pretty amazing running Half-Life on this thing for poops n giggles.

Doesn't have wifi so you can't do multiplayer but otherwise I'm enjoying it.

    • +1

      My kids are similar age.
I would agree with the above to get them the R36S when it's on sale for about ~$60AUD (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827333) but looks like price has gone up to $42USD+gst (~$70AUD).

I found the miyoo mini+ to be there go to as it's slightly smaller and perfect for their hands. This was the cheapest seller at $45USD+gst (~$75AUD) usually goes for about ~$100AUD.
https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005944518653.html (only Retro Grey and White available at the moment)

R36S running ArkOS is user friendly, just a bit more steps for updating the firmware using OTG adapter and wifi dongle(sold separately) or OTG to phone to update. Buttons a bit more stiff, trigger buttons more clicky but has joysticks. 3.5" screen.
Miyoo Mini+ running Onion OS is also user friendly, updating firmware and game via SD, wifi built in so can multiplayer together. Buttons are soft, trigger not clicky at all. 3.5" screen and form factor is slightly smaller.

Either one can't go wrong. Miyoo Mini+ can't handle N64 and less ram & power compared to R36S.

      Comparison here:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIdTcgI24YA

If you do get the R36S, I would recommend doing the D-pad and button fix. Pretty easy and will improve them. D-pad just need to loosen a screw about 1 turn. Buttons, just need to cut the plastic that joins the 2 buttons together. Not flush cut as you need part of it to hold it into the console.

    • +1

@Thiefsie @iamtezr @codaroma Thank you. I never came across that comparison video but was perfect. Went with r36s for the kids as looks fun out the box and having sticks for N64 is great. Will definately do a few of the simple mods to improve the feel. I also said screw it and got myself a r35xx+ which I'm sure will end up with them quite a bit.

      • forgot to share this. once you get the R36s google 'R36s - ArkOS image 12152023' it will give you the latest link to latest OS update (1-27-2024).
Simply get the image, use rufus to copy the file to sd card and it'll update to the latest OS. no need for phone or wifi adapter.

  • Isn't powkiddy RGB30 better and about same price?

    • Not strictly better. Very similar specs in terms of emulation and a different form factor and aspect ratio.

I have both and would say it depends on the system/game.

  • Good price, finally decided to pull the trigger on this.

  • Does this code work for other products? I'm looking at getting the Anbernic RG405m.

    • Is that the chunky one that can play ps2?

  • +1

I’ve got a 353v and love it. Small and can play the ps1 games I love.

  • I've been wanting a handheld console for some time now, but completely overwhelmed by the many options. I finally bit the bullet and bought this one.

Good luck - get a TinyBest Set Go rom file from archive.org if you don't know what you are doing. Also get your own MicroSDs. Refer to the other threads on here for other tips and tricks. Enjoy!

      • Thanks for the tip! Will buy a more reliable MicroSD card then.

      • I tried searching Tinybest on archive.org but nothing came up. Have you got any educational/reference links to rom-getting and OS setup?

        • Google "tiny best set go archive.org" and first link (non-sponsored) should do it

Get the addons as necessary for larger memory cards and more games.
