Hi all,

For anyone looking for sharpening stones, the Naniwa store from Amazon Japan has some cheap Gouken spash and go stones for a quarter of the RRP in USD and going for half the price of AUD stores.

Usually dispatched within 4 to 6 weeks

The King DS stone is also on sale for ~$40 which is the cheapest it's been for while, but the Naniwa Gouken stones are spash and go meant to be better according to various youtube reviewers.

No these just don't crack under normal use, and are actually going to be the grit you order.

For something you buy once, why buy something cheap that annoys you?

        So it’s Japan quality tax?

    Shapton is cheaper usually

  • King is good if you’re after an all in one. 1000/6000 covers most knives unless you’re making sushi then you would go higher

Naniwa Gouken Arata are the half-thickness "budget" version of the venerable Naniwa Chosera, which are now Japanese market only. International markets get the Naniwa Pro, which is the same stone, but comes with a plastic base attached and a natural stone.

The Pro/Chosera/Gouken Arata are all the same stone, and the top of the range for Naniwa abrasives, they're a pleasure to use, work quickly, are easy to set up, clean and look after, and leave a great result. I think you have to have tried a lot of sharpening stones to really appreciate the quality though.

  • Timbecon has Suehiro Cerax Sharpening Waterstones on clearance at the moment. For example 800 grit is either $20 or $30, depending on the size:

  • Is this any good with a Tojiro DP (VG10)?
