  • Noob question but - is the 650D worth extra over the 600D from the JB trade-in deal at the mo?

    • +1

you need to do your own research

bare minimum is a read thru the conclusions on these two reviews

      http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-650d-rebel-t4i

      http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos600d

    • My suggestion is get the 600D from JB now and maybe in less than 6 months the price of 650D will drop to the level of 600D now. At that time you can sell your 600D on gumtree for $350 (pessimistically) and just top up a little bit to get 650D.

      • It is not worth the trouble. $559 + $29 shipping is a good deal for a 650D at the moment. Hard to imagine JB doing the same type of deal for 650D in 6 months time.

However, if you planned to upgrade to the next gen 60D (65D?) or the next gen 7D (7D mark II?) later on, then you could consider 600D.

The best/most sensible reason for getting a 600D now is that you want to use the saving to get a better lens.

        • 7d mark ii doesn't come out until 2013 now. 6d is another possible option coming out in end of 2012.

        • 6D would be really nice. It is a full frame DSLR. Won't be cheap though.
          A few new DSLRs coming out… Canon 6D, Nikon D600, and the successors of 60D, 7D, D5100, and D7000.

650D is faster (new CPU), has touch screen, more cross type focus points (focus faster - though a lot actually depends on the lens itself) and better video mode.

Adding shipping cost, it is about $119 more than the JB deal. With $119, you can get a 50mm prime and still have some spare cash.

650D is probably a better choice if (1) you are interested in the video part and/or (2) the faster speed (faster continuous shooting speed and focusing speed) is important.

You cannot go wrong with either deal at those prices. However, if you already have a DSLR, you are better off spending the money on a decent lens.

  • I'm a noobie at cameras but have a general question. After getting a 600D or 650D, how long would you expect to have it before it becomes outdated? and getting a new one??

    • +1

The rebel series, (500D, 550D, 600D, 650D) are updated rather frequently, about once a year, so I'm eexpecting a 700D next year, but this deal is very good if you don't currently own a DSLR. It won't be outdated but there will be newer models.

      • +1

Just to note, a newer model doesn't make the old one bad. I've seen a lot of people who suggest that it isn't worth updating from sat a 550D to a 600D. When people upgrade they seem to go up to a higher family (and price point) such as a 60D, not update within the family itself to a 650D.

    • +2

I'd say the camera would be outdated once your skills and knowledge go beyond what the camera features can offer.

    • I'd suggest at least ten years. A lot of pro's use 300d and older cameras as second bodies. I've got a 550d and haven't got any need to update, lenses now that's another story :)

How is it a saving of $240 when for another $300 dollars extra you can get the Nikon D7000. Blows these entry level Canon out of the water. To be honest, the camera IMO is only worth that. Its a stepping stone for you to get something much better later on. If you have an extra $300, you might as well go for something decent now.

    • +3

How about 60D (which should be cheaper than Nikon D7000)? Sure, D7000 is better in most areas (let's not forget that in terms of video, 600D is ahead of D7000, and 650D is even further ahead). Don't under estimate 650D, it does have the latest gen Canon CPU.

The point of getting 600D/650D is that you can spend the difference (e.g. $200, $240) on a better lens. Camera body isn't the only thing that matters. The lens can make a big difference.

      • If you can afford Nikon D7000, how about fancy yourself with a good Canon L Lens.
Lens price specially a good/rare ones is hardly to depreciate fast (most of them getting more expensive)not like camera body

    • Much better later on… Well, the 60D and the 7D share the same sensor. Yes, there are differences, especially with the build quality, but for a seasonal photographer (most people here I would say, considering some of the discussion here) this is not a big deal. I am actually thinking of "downgrading" from a $3500 Canon camera to this one, as I don't have much time for my hobby now. And for taking few pictures on the holidays, I don't need a super sturdy body, weather shield and great ergonomy.
If you are planning to take >10.000 pic per year, then go for something more ergonomic and more solid built. Otherwise I still think this body will not limit you, it will be your ability limiting the body :-) (unless you are going to be a pro or semi pro).
And for me, I can still use all my lenses, they don't age (unless you treat them badly). The priorities are: 1) The photographer, 2) the lens, 3) the body

  • can only one tell me if 650d has lens micro adjustment features? thx

Does anyone knows what is the price in Costco for this model, the benefit I can see is the warranty…

With Kogan, you get 14 days money back guarantee. That is good. Reason being that if you happened to get a defective one, you are much better off getting the money back, rather than going through warranty process or recall process.

As for the DSLR going bad after a few months. It is best that it does not happen. The warranty process, even if it is local AU warranty, will take at least 1 month. Yes, local warranty is better. However, ideally, you don't want to go through warranty repair (no matter how good it is, a repair is never a good thing). At the end of the day, it depends on how much that local warranty is worth to you. For 600D/650D, probably not a huge deal. If you go for a full frame DSLR, then local warranty is certainly more important.

      • Agree with you "no matter how good it is, a repair is never a good thing"

        • Had a Canon camera repaired under Aust warranty… was fast and painless. Still works perfectly.

      • Don't our consumer laws state that if they sell you a defective product, you have some rights to ask for a replacement or a refund? That's not for change of mind scenarios however, just cases where a product doesn't work as advertised.

  • looks like it's high time for me to trade in my 350d…

  • bought one for $799+ $38 shipping…
    thanx op

  • This is better than the JB 600D deal. But are these "Australian Stock" with Australian Warranty?

    • Imported, direct delivery.
