LOL at he scaling of the grinder vs the machine in this image. The grinder is 4cm taller than the machine according to specs.

    • +25

      LOL at he scaling

It might be due to the automatic descaling.

      • I actually laughed. That’s genuine dad joke material!

  • +4

Great machine, mine is 15 years old and still going strong. I have a Auber PID installed in mine and makes very consistent espresso's. I highly recommend installing a PID.

    • I'd love one of these Italian machines as I feel like my Oracle is going to just break at any moment with all the plastic, feel like I can't do without the auto milk frothing though. I wonder if there's higher level Italian machines that have auto-milk…

    • +3

…or just buy a Breville with a PID installed by the factory.

      • +3

I don't think a breville will get 15+ years with so many plastic components compared to a Rancillio

        • +1

This thing costs five of what my Breville with PID cost.

If I get six years out of it - and I'm on two already - I'm ahead.

          • @jong: Which Breville? BDB? Nah I dont think so. Please explain that maths

          • @jong: The Breville is still an appliance, this is a machine.

      • +2

One day the Italians will modernise and include a five sense Microcontroller running a PID, heck even just a PI, loop.

        • +1

And a drip tray in the Silvia that doesn't overflow if you forget to check it for a few days.

    • I’m worried it’s too hard. No wiring experience at all. Thoughts?

    • Says it has an integrated PID temperature controller already installed. Is that not good enough?

  • I had a Rancilio Lucy (Silvia + a built in grinder) about 20 years before, great machine but the looking is still the same after 20-30 year now…

    • Subjective, but I like the old industrial, minimalist styling of the Silvia and that the design is consistent. Has Rancilio decided to improve the quality of the stainless steel in the base to stop the rusting yet though?

      • Not sure of the answer to that one. Seen a fair few older Sivlias with that problem. When I picked up my secondhand Silvia many years ago it was just starting to rust at the base like you mentioned. I applied ACF 50 on the base every 6 months or so and the base didn't rust out further.

      • +1

I'm not sure if the stainless tray that's rusting. I think it's the painted base which I doubt is stainless. Mine rusted so I just sanded, rust converted and painted with some heavy paint. Been 5 years no issues (17 all up)

      • The old frame was not stainless that's why it's rusted.
Rancilio did update the base to stainless and you can buy to replace your old one ~$190ish

I have an older version of this coffee machine, still going after 14 years with only one service (and semi-regular cleaning) - 2 cups a day every day. It's a pretty simple machine but does the job.

    • Do you have PID installed?

      • No - haven't really looked into it.

  • +1

You talk about the "The integrated PID temperature control" but I didn't think the Silvia came with PID as it appears to be a common mod and a key complaint with the 'temperature surfing' - do you install this separately, is this a new feature, or is it a mistake in the description?

    • This will definitely not have a PID. PID is definitely recommended so you can have consistent shots.

      • -1

You haven't mentioned the PID's yet

    • It's probably a mistake in the description, only the Silvia Pro X has an integrated PID.

  • Is there an option to pick either E or M version? Or do you just ship them out at random?

    • Hi, We have added that option

  • +2

How does this compare to a Breville DB?

    • I’m curious to know too. I’m pretty happy with my dual boiler, but wondering what more is out there.

      • +4

Everyone will have a diff opinion, but for me, this is a step backwards in every department other than build quality and steam power.

        • Didn't know these had more steam power, good to know.

          • +1

@bleeder: I don't know the specs, just watching milk steaming vs my BDB, seemed a bit quicker.

            • +1

@ddr0001: The Silvia is a single boiler so you would have to wait for steam pressure/temp to build to steam milk (You can't brew and steam at the same time) You would also have to flush the group to bring temps down to brew coffee. It's a bit of a process but not bad once you're use to it. Without a PID you will be constantly temp surfing. The DB is better for back-to-back shots and you can brew and steam at the same time as it has a brew and steam boiler.

      • Breville will always be a Breville. The BDB is packed with 2 boilers and features a PID and pre-infusion, etc. Things that you typically don't get till you drop about $4K+ on a machine. However it takes shortcuts to get there in build quality/materials. Plastic in the group head, and plastic internal components. You can have quite a good run with them and I've even recommended them to a few of my mates who just need something easy that can produce great results. But they aren't really for true purists. I went the Gaggia Classic Pro myself because at the time I was willing to put in more effort in the prep and workflow. If it was me looking at this deal, It'd be the Sylvia, but with a different grinder like the DF64 Gen 2.

    • The Silvia will last longer than the DB for sure. But the DB has many more features. If you mostly drink espressos then get the Silvia. If you drink mostly milk-based coffees or make 3 or 4 coffees at a time, buy the DB.

      • For espresso, I'd expect the better temperature control of DB would be quite useful as well. It's also nice to see the pressure.

    • +1

I’ve owned both, Silvia for about 6 years, then moved to a DB.

In every way, the DB is better.

      • Thanks, will get the DB for parents as well (DB owner myself but have heard great things about this brand).

  • +1

    Long lasting efficient

  • +2

Not that great a deal. You can get both separate for 5% more.

You'd get a better deal on a machine and grinder combo at any coffee shop where you can expect 10% with negotiation.

At $1550 delivered you'd think about it but the savings here are minimal to be honest.

Good luck with travelling and finding better deal

That was not the point made by @Jamesfromoz so you need to better understand the questions before making off topic answers.
By the way, Gaggia makes much better value coffee machines and they look way more upgraded and modern compared to Stone Age Rancilio ones.

        • +1

I'd take a Rancilio Silvia over a Gaggia Classic all day long. Why would you need to drastically change the design? For example, the E61 Group head has been around since…yes you guessed it, 1961. Plenty of manufacturers still using that design/tech.

      • Risky challenge to throw out on OB.

    • I agree some ppl may get a better deal with negotiations however not everyone is comfortable with bargaining.

  • +12

Hate this company, and would never buy anything from them. They clog Gumtree up with their ads for used coffee machines. They have over 1500 ads on Gumtree for used coffee machines. All under the name "Michael Rabibi" and they all start with the unimaginative title "Wow look what has just landed in our showroom".
Makes it hard to find coffee machines being sold by individuals/privately, which is probably their intention.

    • I'm not sure how much I agree on the neg to this specific deal based on them selling unrelated products on an irrelevant platform. I get that having issues with a seller is a valid neg but I'm not entirely convinced that fits this scenario.

      • +1

I'm not entirely convinced that fits this scenario

Indeed it does, you must buy at their conditions so looking for a second hand outside of their business is very hard.
        In fact:

Good luck with travelling and finding better deal

Which sounds like this is if you want it or go away and that is stupid.
By the way, if you understand marketing, a healthy business doesn't need advertising!

  • -1

not sure what I am missing here, I had one of the these 10-15 years ago as my first machine to try it out and it was cheap - like $400
$1500 for this and grinder, not sure its a deal?
when you can get DB for $1k

    • +1

I paid close to $900for the machine 14 years ago, if you got it for $400 then you Ozbargained that one.

      • +1

if take inflation for 14 years into account, then, this deal is still a bargain!

  • -1

    not sure its a deal?

In fact this is just a normal advertising:

Buy Rancilio Silvia V6 E or M Silver Coffee Machine With Macap M2M Chrome Grinder

  • +2

I've owned various versions of the Silvia. It makes no sense to buy new in 2024. Just get a secondhand one for ~$300-600 (easy to find) if you really want a machine that can only do 9 bar shots, and has no stock PID.

Get a Breville Bambino Plus for $500 and spend the rest on a grinder, if you do exclusively milk drinks. Otherwise, get the Breville Dual Boiler next deal and slayer mod it and you'll get better tasting espresso than any machine in its price range.

I agree with Mick01 - Di Pacci ruined Gumtree with its ads for coffee equipment. I wish I could block their ads. Anyway to do so?

  • Have to neg the company. Rep has previously been quite misleading here. And doesn't seem to have improved with the rude attitude. Hope you don't make a sale from OzB until you fix your attitude.
