    From MSY:

    Intel i7-3770 3.4/3.9GHz $298.00
    AsRock Z77-PRO3 $113.00
    Kingston KVR 4GB SINGLE DDR3 1333 $19.00
    Hitachi 3.5" Desktar 1TB SATA3 HDD 7200rpm $78.00
    A-Power 3.5" Black Internal A-I-O Card Reader $7.00
LG DVD RW - SATA $19.00
    Sapphire 1GB 6450 PCI-E VGA Card $39.00
    Windows 7 HP 64-bit $92.00
Antec VSK-2450P Tower Case with PSU $85.00
    Build Fee $70
    Total $820

I've given them the benefit of the doubt on the mainboard and PSU and included decent ones but have used a slightly worse GPU (no slower but uses more power). So, cheaper than MSY, possibly. At least in the same general ball park.

That said, this is not a machine I'd recommend for the vast majority of users. It has an overpowered CPU, a slow and relatively low capacity HDD and a crappy graphics card. It'd almost be good as a photo/video editor, but someone who was serious about those wouldn't have that HDD. It's definitely not a gaming machine. It's not a fast day to day machine (you'd get an SSD for that).

So it's an internet browsing/word document box with a massively overpowered CPU. Which I wouldn't really recommend.

If you're looking for a general purpose machine (mostly internet/work with a little bit of gaming/vid editing) around the $800 mark, this is what I'd suggest:

      From MSY:

      Intel i3 3220 $123
      ASRock B75-PRO3-M $70
      Kingston HyperX 8G Kit(4Gx2) DDR3 1600 $43
      Intel SSD-330 Series 120GB SATA3 Solid-State-Drive $95
      Seagate 3.5" Barracuda 2TB 7200rpm $101
      Gigabyte GV-R775OC-2GI 2GB 7750 PCI-E VGA Card (SI) $99
LG DVD RW - SATA $19
      Windows 7 HP 64-bit $92
Antec VSK-2450P Tower Case with PSU $85
      Build Fee $70
      Total $797

And maybe try and find someone who knows what they're doing to give you a hand building it and save that $70 build fee then up the CPU to an i5 3470.

5400RPM HDD for a desktop? I am sure you will be regret for buying this.

Terrible specs. Not a bargain. HP is unreliable too.

wack a ssd in it and use the hdd for storage. good for photo editing maybe.

Can't really get behind those specs at such a price. Video card and HDD are pretty miserable, and the crappy PSU and MB that prebuilts come with limit upgrades

I think you'd be better off getting your local computer store to build you something suited to your needs

  • For users without the skill to build a PC
I think this is a great price for an i7.!

you get betters specs in a laptop for the same money

^Much better all around system with a faster HDD, 2x4gb ram & a ghz edition GPU that will max out most games on a 1080p monitor & PCCG have good customer service.

Harvey Norman won't even allow the return of a 2 day old product in original packaging with receipt, so I wouldnt trust them with warranty issues.

  • great advice on waht is bad and what is better for this novice!
