I got the HD recently for $29… Well worth it. The unit hides behind the TV (requires a power point) and is surprisingly powerful 💪
You can potentially power it off a usb port on your TV
You can, but it does take a little longer to boot up from cold.
Thanks never new that
Eh I don't really agree. It can't natively decode 4k x265 at all. If you are running your own media server this is a huge headache. Whilst I'm aware that the max display output is 1080p, it is a shame it can't decode anything higher.
Yeah i'm not a massive fan of it, found it quite underpowered. Does the job though (just).
Where it excels is form factor - it lives in my travel bag now and is perfect for some quick netflix/kayo/optus sport etc. whilst away from home.
The 4K was just on sale during Xmas for $48 via Amazon.
Interestingly this deal seems quite popular too, despite relatively much higher price, signing up and getting coupons.
That was definitely an all time low bargain, but currently unavailable.
Does anyone here use Plex with these? Mine suddenly wants to transcode aac—> ac3 even though they are supposed to support them direct play.
I've purchased a Fire stick to see if they play,
Sounds similar to what I came across the other day. Haven't looked into it in-depth yet. I have both Chromecast and Fire stick. I'll give them a test later.
Mine direct plays h264, h265 with aac 5.1, no problem at all. I also have a fire stick 4k max and it also direct plays no problem.
Ahh its driving me mad. The Sony TV stopped dirrect playing also.l around the same time.
I read somewhere that there is version 1 and 2 for aac and maybe that is causing issues.
Maybe need to start again with the server and statt clean (using the same files). Its weird becuae the files play fine through plex web or vcl
Anyway, first world problems
You can just install another server - docker, VM, another PC - and see what it does. No need to nuke your existing server first.
@lunchbox99: Good idea, but the Amazon Fire lite stick just turned up this morning. Set it up and files direct play no problem.
Weird, on server it would even say transode audio, aac—> ac3.
But now I'll need a 4k fire stick for the Sony google tv.
Is it worth replacing our current og Google Chromecast with this? We currently have a fake smart TV (HiSense UI), with only basic streaming apps like YouTube, NetFlix and some generic crapapps.
If we want something like AmazonPrime, we currently need to cast to it, but I hear the GoogleTV app would be a significant upgrade over current UI with a much wider mainstream selection?
Yeah, upgrade to this, its significantly better than the old school Chromecasts
Can you re-program the Netflix and YouTube buttons on the remote?
Yes you can - via long press (https://www.howtogeek.com/693763/how-to-remap-buttons-on-the…)
Don't need to really, the voice button works almost perfectly, just press that and tell it what app you want open
I am tird of my 4K one. It will be going on Marketplace soon for $30.
If you are not far away I might be interested in picking it up. Please PM me if interested
Same here!
How to check the device is HD / 4K verison? I don't have the box anymore.
How long does the 10$ sign up voucher take?
almost instant
Signed up another account lol Couldn't wait forever. Thanks
Honestly $29 plus 15mins installing Brave browser and bookmarking a few streaming sites found on reddit.
All set, no subscriptions needed.
How did you get Brave browser installed on the Google TV? There's no native app for it.
Anyone used the HD one with Stremio and its various add ons?
Yep! Works well :)
I'm assuming these discounts indicate a new model is coming soon.
If you don't urgently need one, I'd probably wait for an upgraded 4K version (and then see if you can grab one on sale if you don't want to pay RRP).
If you're after the HD one, you probably can't go wrong for $29.
Yes. The new Chromecast was expected, by those who follow Google products, to be announced in October 2023, but now seems 2024 will be the announcement and release.
Google search 'chromecast 2024' for some rumours and a few interesting additions found in Android 14.
Is the email with the code separate to the email that says "Thanks for subscribing"?
Lol got the 4K for $38 via JB hifi recently
Anyone able to get the code today? Or is it no longer available?
Update: got it! Still available!
i am late :( wish I could see your update yesterday.
Great deal :)
