  • Oh, how does this compare with them new fangled induction cook tops. I just had a look and you can buy for similar price. (not a brand name I recognise though)

Go Induction stoves all the way, much better efficient use of energy compared to all else.
Radiant cookers like these will cost a lot more in electricity bill very quickly.

      • Thank you and all the constructive comments below. Excellent. And a big hello to Dorothy Dix.

    • Only thing to factor in for induction cooktop is whether your place has enough power. Induction requires approx 30+ amps from memory and a lot of older homes or apartments may not have enough spare capacity.

    • When I replaced my ceramic with induction, put the old one on ebay for 5c. No one wanted. So put out with hard waste. Lot of people checked out the pile, but no one took it. Hate to see working stuff end up in the landfill, but seems even for free no one wants a ceramic cooktop these days. Still good for a rental where you don't have to use it or pay the electricity I'd imagine, at least in the current rental market.

      Edit:
As for power. Mine you can set a limit as low as 10A. Wouldn't work any worse than the older style electric you are replacing since that will have the same limit. If you are replacing gas on the other hand, then that would be different. In my case there was a 20A output for the ceramic, so I just fitted a 20A plug and set the limit to that rather than rewiring. Power limit hasn't be an issue so far. Also guessing not all have a limit you can set though? In that case, you could trip the circuit if you aren't careful.

Jesus you don't need to encourage shitty landlords with shitty attitudes like this.

        • God bless you and your comment!

Not saying I'd do it. Just not really sure who else would be buying a ceramic cooktop these days. Like I said, couldn't give a perfectly good one away.

You'd be crazy not to get induction now regardless if it costs more. Once you go induction you never go back.

Just noticed this one at Bing Lee on special for $399.

      So much this.

Faster heating, hotplate doesnt get "hot" <— there is some residual heat from the pot, but that dissipates quickly

      • What's induction like compared to gas to cook with?

      • The hotplate does get hot.

Please don't touch near the hotplate.

        I mean it's simple physics.

        Heat needs to disappear somewhere

    • Induction is great but yeah i prefer gas.

A cheaper gas cooktop beats a cheap induction type.

      • +1

Gas generally beats induction, as open flame give more possibilities, eg. toss and flip in a wok is not quite possible on a regular induction stove, but induction is waaay more efficient and safer.

      • Is there an issue with gas products of combustion being inhaled (not talking about CO but other products of combustion)?
Additionally it has been discovered that even new gas appliances (we are talking brand new off the assembly line) leak methane. Apparently it's an unstoppable thing.

    • You'd be crazy not to get induction

      Or you're a landlord, unfortunately.

Well, some gov is going to ban them at some stage. The sooner the better.
