Only problem with 18-200mm is that it may be a jack of all trades, it isn't that stella at any of the focal ranges.
It's a great travel lens though, and that's what it was designed for.that's correct, but as for holiday snap photos with everyday photographers, its a fabulous lens.
Like I said great travel lens.
For a everyday lens I'm thinking something like the 17-55mm would be great. (Although that will cost more than the DX body lol) Actually the stock 18-55mm is perfectly fine for a everyday lens for the average joe.
For everyday I wouldn't mind using a 50mm or 35mm prime. I barely use my 18-105mm anymore. (Unless I'm traveling)

You're missing 55-70mm with that set up. (The reverse can be said that you're missing 200-300mm but at the telephoto end there's very limited use)
That and the 55-200mm is smaller and lighter and has a shorter minimum focusing distance ~1.1m compared to ~1.5m of the 70-300mm.

be careful to clean 50-200mm lens, some has sealing problems (due a bad production batch I guess)
I saw days old lens already has tiny spec of dust inside the lens! my heart just sank :(
It doesn't effect the pictures quality though.
