For a little bit more, I would recommend this 16TB new EXOS hard drive.

      Agreed.

      Seagate

      Pass

      "New"

Plenty of people saying they are made in 2021. They could even be duds that have been given an 'eh good enough it works' quick fix up job by Seagate and shipped out as 're-certified' replacements.

At least with these you know what you're getting, which isn't that bad. ~16,000 hours and only a handful of restarts. Should always backup any drive old or new anyway.

    so ex chia drives?

i'd love to see how many km is on the clock

3yr waranty is no good if you have to restore you files all the time

    • Chia drives do bugger all read n write once plots written they sit idle.

  • used… yikes

  • Eastdigital has sold me a deskstar ages ago and it's worked flawlessly. I would defs recommend.

    No SMART data, no deal.

  • That's really good $/Tb!

But how will the 3y warranty work? Mail back to USA on own account?

    • +1

maybe if they dont ghost you

    • Mail to HK I mean

Just don’t. It’s used with unknown history. You’ll lose either your data and/or time.
Two things you should never buy used:
    Hard drives and condoms

      And toilet paper

They're enterprise drives, I've personally used similar or other enterprise class drives for over 1,000,000 hours in datacenter environments.

Used enterprise hardware is far more reliable than consumer grade stuff. This is engineered and tested to perform in large scale datacenters operating 24x7x365.

If drive failures lead you to lose your data, then you don't have a backup strategy.

  • Something like this for CCTV?
    In a UDM-Pro?

    • This is ideal for that and a lot cheaper than WD purple.

I've had 2 x 12tb 'used' Ultrastar drives that I bought from Aliexpress of all places… and they've worked perfectly without issues for 3 years. In fact I've only ever bought ultrastar drives, and so far have never had one fail. Not saying failures don't happen, just has never happened to me.

  • I recall these being referred to as "Death-Stars".
No way I would buy used.

Haha are you sure you're not getting confused with the Hitachi Desk stars, which WD purchased?

Never had an issue with those or any colour WD, except for a WD SSD that died for no apparent reason after a short life. Seagate is another story, too many failures to mention.

      • Yep, I think you're right. My bad
