[NSW] Free Entry to Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo & Castle Hill

1810

Visited the Powerhouse museum in Ultimo with my wife and daughter recently and to my pleasant surprise they don’t charge entry anymore (probably the same for the Castle Hill site too). Seems like it has been like that for a while, but didn’t see any information on Ozbargain about ongoing free entry.

Great free option to entertain the kids!

General entry to Powerhouse Ultimo & Castle Hill and most exhibitions are free; however, fees may apply for some ticketed exhibitions, programs and special events.

  • What can you do there OP?

    • +14

Cool exhibits, plenty of interesting stuff to kill a couple of hours. My daughter particularly liked the big trains (the first train ever commissioned in NSW is there!), helicopter, and planes.

      • +2

yeah they're really shoving this diversity bs down our throats.

      • +2

Not sure why all the down votes, the fax machine only spiting facts.

      • -8

Agree. The Queer thing is a generative approach to influencing children. It’s not necessary. No one gives a twig nowadays about what others do in ( should be) the privacy of their home.

        Just leave the kids alone.

        • +15

Ah, the old each way bet.

"We actually don't mind what you do, no one minds it.. just do it behind closed doors"

Then an ice cream ad shows two guys holding hands and BOYCOTT WOKE ICE CREAM BS

        • +10

Except some kids are actually queer or trans or gay, and this whole idea of only accepting queerness when its hidden and you can ignore it doesn't stop those kids from hating themselves when their parents threaten to disown them if they don't force themselves to be cis-het. I don't think it's woke to lend visibility to people that have historically been forced to hide, and I don't think it's woke to actually have role models that LGBTQI kids can look up to.

"Leave the kids alone." leads to queer kids being bullied at schools. It leads to self-harm and suicide.

      • +7

        Then don't go :)

      • +4

They are less about steam engines and technology and more about the woke.

        What are you talking about?
At at least 90% of the museum is dedicated to technology displays. These are temporary exhibits, not to mention there are other 4 other exhibits on right now that are not "woke".

        • But there's also some weird stuff that isn't old, white oz - hoohum malarkey!

    • +11

      I did not know that.

    • +2

      But good news

  • +4

Go to their website, and it says "General entry is free. Some programs are ticketed"

    • +3

      No it hasn't.

    • +1

      The whole museum became 'free',
      during covid lockdowns,
      a couple of years ago.

    • +2

Some are born during the pandemic

  • +3

didnt realise it was free. also wasnt it supposed to be move to parra? Last I've heard of it, it wasn't viable to move to a flood zone but I take it thats been canned?

    • they're closing soon for some multi-year renos but both museums will happily coexist in the future

    • +8

Powerhouse (Ultimo) is closing at the end of February 2024,
for about 3+ years of renovations, before re-opening at the same site.

      • +2

It should stay open until the new Parramatta site opens but that sort of thinking is beyond politicians.

The original plan was to close Ultimo and develop the site (housing) but Glady's got so much flake from it they decided to keep it.
It wouldn't surprise me if they say they are closing it for 3 years for the refurbishment but never reopen hoping the public forget about it and then sell off the site.

      • +2

The impending closure was what prompted me to visit on Saturday. It was really great and a fantastic way to escape the heat for a few hours.
Sad that we'll lose access to this wonderful resource for a few years but looking forward to it reopening bigger and better in the future.

Parramatta Power House is being built as we speak. They are going to keep Ultimo due to public backlash along with the new Parramatta site.

Well I lived in Darling Square next door for the past 3 years and didn’t know, ‘mate’, so it’s safe to say others don’t know either. That’s what Ozbargain is all about isn’t it, sharing information?

It wasn’t on Ozbargain (I checked). There’s only a post about free entry after the first lockdown (which is labelled expired).

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/541735

        • Sometimes this is OzInfo and OzRRP you'll get used to it.

      • +3

FYI, the Australia Museum (the one next to Hyde Park) is also free for general entry.

The PowerHouse now is like half of the one 5 years ago, and couldn't attract my kids anymore.

  • +2

I was there March '22, it was free then and probably way before that

  • +2

When my daughter was little, my wife used to take her there quite often and we were members at that time. I’m sure we would not pay for membership if it was free then.

  • What's the difference between this one and the one at Castle Hill?

    • +4

Castle Hill is a storehouse that has some interesting displays. It's only open on weekends.between 10am & 4pm. Ultimo is the showroom and has heaps more on display.

  • +10

So many clueless people not knowing powerhouse museum is free. FYI all Sydney Living Museums are also free.

I find powerhouse museum not that kid friendly.

    Australian museum is better

    • Before it has many parts closing down for renovations (like 5 years ago), my kids preferred that to AM. Now, yes they prefer AM.

  • Loved it there, only recently found it free myself, definitely suss out the ISS simulation, a real trip

  • Thanks OP

  • I've been several times but a decade ago.. Thanks OP, and good to know.

  • +1

All museums should be free. At the very least to kids, students and the financially challenged.

    • -2

And then everyone will complain how their taxes and rates will increase to cover the cost. Museums have to be paid for somehow and it’s not like the government/councils are swimming in excess cash from existing taxes

      • +2

It works throughout Europe, and they're hardly flush with money.

Anyway, a tax increase to cover such a scheme would be negligible.

        • -1

I forgot we are exactly like Europe

      • +1

I'd gladly pay more tax to cover the cost. I feel like the state and federal governments (regardless of party) greatly undervalues and underfunds art and culture

    • I agree

  • +3

I went there about 6 months ago, well worth the visit, some very interest artefacts and exhibits. Need a couple of hours the to get a good look at everything.

  • +3

When I was studying in UTS, I heard that you dont need to pay to go in, just show your student id.
So, I went in, showed my student id, and asked the person, just like that and I can walk around?

Apparently you need to have class to be able to go inside. End up paying $20 if I am not wrong. Now its great that its free.

  • Thanks OP. I am going to visit a bunch of free sydney museums in January.

  • +3

'Free for a while/always been free' commenters, why the heck you didn't post it to aware people then? Isn't that the whole purpose of sites like ozb to 'aware' people?

'Thanks op for making those aware who didn't know' should've been sufficed

  • +1

Thanks OP, something to add to my list to do with my children. 4-week break with them and I need all I can get for free to keep them busy at the same time as save money

    • +1

No problems! Every little bit helps with cost of living impacting families the most. The area around Darling Square/Tumbalong Park often has plenty of interesting free stuff to see and do over the Christmas break, so keep an eye out for events :)

      • I remember something about the Powerhouse being free around covid, but I had subsequently forgotten/assumed they'd gone back to charging again. Thanks for this well timed reminder. Will be sure to go over the holiday period.

  • I live near there and have been visiting for free for as long as I can remember

the current 'FREE' deal is AFAIK a sop to people angry about the imminent closure of the Ultimo Powerhouse for 3 years of 'renovations' after the plan for a 42 storey block of flats for Mike Baird's developer friends was fought against for the last X years by angry locals and finally 'cancelled?'

    • All they have to do is find some asbestos, claim it's too hard to rectify without a full knock-down and rebuild which isn't in budget, so sorry we had to go ahead and close permanently. Hopefully this comment is around in 3.5 years.

      • LOL I can appreciate your cynicism for state politics. That's pretty much the modus operandi of how they get away with various underhanded and shady "business decisions".
