  • Can the solar keep up if the camera is say facing the driveway?

    • +1

Depends on a number of factors, how sunny it is, amount of traffic, boundary triggers, uploading to cloud, etc.
Just to be clear, the solar is topping up an internal battery, so its really whether the solar can match or exceed the demand on the battery, which will be a very specific use case.

For what its worth, I have the previous model, and it can go a few days without solar top ups, based on low traffic motion activation.

    • I've got the previous model camera underneath the awning but solar panel on the side of the house and it's lasted months. It gets morning sun and nothing in the evening.

    • As a guide, I use mine without the solar panel at the moment, it faces my front door and records around a dozen 15-second clips a day. The battery lasts approximately 2.5 months between charges.

  • My camera is inside where there is no power outlet, but connected to the solar panel (mounted outside) via the cable which is quite long.

    • Is yours inside looking through a window? I'm looking for a camera that can be used inside, facing outside. Haven't found any yet that will worry at night without IR light reflection

      • Oh you meant facing window?
        Mine with no window

AFAIK these cameras need to be mounted where the camera doesn't have to look through windows because they are triggered to record by PIR (passsive infrared) sensor in addition to IR illumination LED reflection issues. Otherwise they won't capture anything because they won't detect any motion as PIR generally doesn't work through glass. I have yet to see any major consumer vendor that uses microwave detection/dual tech PIR.

  • Forgot to mention that the camera is WiFi capable

  • Is the battery replaceable?
    Will it work on POE?

    • According to Reolink's website, the internal battery is not replaceable.

If you want a PoE camera, there are better, cheaper models from Reolink that are far more suitable.

  • Recommended for baby monitoring.
    So babies, outside?

I've been using this camera at a remote location for 18 months. The camera and solar panel are both mounted 4m up a tree trunk and the battery has never been less than 50%. It records 50 to 150 short clips each day, both onto an SD card and to Reolink cloud.
One major limitation is that the camera only wakes when it detects PIR motion, and the range is only about 10m. So there is no pre-recording, and most of my recordings are of people or vehicles leaving the frame. I.e. it takes a second or two to detect motion and start recording.
Otherwise, it's been rock solid, maintains connection to an access point 80m away, and gives some record of movement.

    • Are there any limitations with using an sd card for storage? Do you get any false detections?

      • I use a 64GB SD card, which saves about 45 days of recordings. I don't know what the limit is. The online cloud only saves 7 days of recordings.
I get heaps of false detections, mostly shadows from trees blowing in the wind.
