Cheap, but be aware even at 1Watt the range will be horrible. Dont expect much if its not line of sight

  • I've been looking for a decent one for my Ute, unsure if this is any good as don't want to spend more than a 100

    • +2

      Don't buy this then.

Buy something half decent and use an external antenna.

      • +1

Is the BaoFeng or whatever it's called still good for under $100 for this lad?

        • +3

They are still handheld and technically not compliant from a legal perspective.

I would suggest something like this and then using an external antenna.

          • @geekcohen: Oh yeah, my bad.

          • @geekcohen:

not compliant from a legal perspective.

            How so?

            • +1

@RecklessMonkeys: Because they are not "locked" down to UHF CB Only Frequencies by default and can be used elsewhere which is not legal unless you have the relevant licensing. So if caught by ACMA with a non-compliant radio, it can result in a fine.

Plus, if you are found using a frequency that you are not licensed to or causing interference, also a fine

              • @geekcohen: OK. Cheers.

Is there anything worth monitoring? Sounds like all the emergency services have changed to encrypted.

                • +1

@RecklessMonkeys: Nope, pretty much everything worth listening to is now digital. You can still listen to some stuff with the right digital scanner and programming (but that is like $800), but it is only selected services. Police are encrypted.

            • +1

@RecklessMonkeys: Contact Acma or face poss jail!

        • +1

A second hand mobile radio would be better.

    • call up one of the shops, a mate last month walked in & got a 5w one for ~$100. we couldn't find it on the website.

    • Look at something like this entire kit for under $300.

  • -1

Will this pickup police and emergency workers channels
Would be good to hear whats going on in bankstown-canterbury area at night

    • +1

No. Its a UHF CB 80 Channel Handheld.

    • +1

Police operate private channels in NSW (and most likely elsewhere aswell).

    • +2

Emergency services are all on digital systems nowadays with encryption enabled.
Even the towies are using encrypted comms so they cant "steal" each other's jobs.
Anything sub 2 watt should be considered a toy, good to help back the trailer/caravan up and thats about it.

Grabbed two to fulfil my childhood shortcomings of not having a walkie talkie.. 😅

    • +3

I remember as a tweeny thinking the future had arrived early with my walkie talkie. The Morse code function was a 1980s iteration of Snapchat

      • +1

        Woah, you're ancient.. 🤣

How'd you dickpic unwilling women in the 80's? I guess the only option was IRL + jail time..

      • The Morse code function was a 1980s iteration of Snapchat

        --- --.. -... .- .-. --. .- .. -.

      • Hahaha i still have that exact one except in white in the box, it's a double pack. I think the old man bought in the late 70s from Flemington markets maybe haha

        • I recall my set being silver

          • @MS Paint: Nice, i seem to remember they were so limited in range obviously cos of the limited specs and had lots of static noise too. Were virtually useless but lots of fun for a while.

cheers OP, bought a pair for some Xmas camping fun. Also will work decently for 2 car convoy travelling which we do a lot.

  • Is it good for kids as a toy? Looking to purchase a pair. Thanks.

I keep one in the car to chat to all the Karen's and Kevins on channel 36 towing caravans while on regional roads.

Muzeeb - hey Kevin, I've been stuck behind following you for the last 12km, your left wheel looks a bit wobbly

Kevin - thanks, slowing down to pull over now

    Muzeeb - great idea Kevin

    • channel 36 towing caravans

      Isn't the caravan channel #18?

Channel 36 is a repeater input for channel #6

Whatever is on the sticker on the back of the van. eg.

      Muzeeb is actually Ivan Milat.

Hey Kevin, your left wheel looks a bit wobbly. The Belangalo State Forest turn off is 1km away. I suggest you pull off there. I'll come and help you. Any backpackers onboard?

        • +1

Yes, yes and yes baby! 🤣

  • Hey @geekcohen,

My order was just cancelled from store for OOS but not considering I almost spent $40 on crap. Maybe I should just spend a little more for a single Boafeng and play around with that. I remember researching a few years ago a really solid unit that was like maybe $60 - $90ish new at the time. Do you remember which model I may be talking about? I heard it was all the rave during Covid.

    • +1

      Possibly was a UV5.

      • I think you're right. It looks like what I remembered. I just don't remember them being this cheap. I tried to look at the 10 aswell and don't remember it looking like that but I assume the 10 would be better?

I just remember everyone raving about this for some special function or something it had at the time. Not sure why I never looked up the 10 at the time. I remember though at that time it was almost always OOS even on Ali.

On a sidenote aswell, googling the 5, there shows an ebay listing titled "legal version" which I believe is NOT what I want. Maybe something to do with more functionality if purchased directly from China or something? I'll have do a deep dive on youtube again tonight to see if I can find out WTF I'm talking about.. 😅

I've got various Baofengs. You'll need Chirp https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download and a programming cable https://www.baofengradio.com/products/baofeng-programming-ca…. Read their forums etc for issues you may have with drivers and the like, but once setup you just program it with Aus frequencies and names and off you go. And can just clone the config into multiple units. May have to google for the model name if Chirp doesn't know about it and it'll just be one of the other ones listed with the same chip.
I've bought stubby antennae for all mine as they suit my use. About $2 each https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005274596868.html

From reading, even if programmed to Aus frequencies they are still illegal, even to own, let alone use. It's because they don't have the accredited tick mark from ACMA(?). Fine can be huge.
