Was kindly notified by @joetrim that this collection had dropped to a lower price than it was when I previously posted it.

I eagerly purchased last time so that I could finally watch Playtime as I hear such great things about it, but fast forward a couple months and I've watched nothing from the collection. I guess that means I now join the ranks of my fellow Ozbargain hoarder scum who buy things and never use them, therefore justifying our disgusting consumerist culture that both sustains and burdens out existence ✊

Godspeed, my fellow lost souls. Godspeed.

Oh, and because they're likely to come up as they always do, I'll go ahead and answer your questions in advance to save you some time:

  1. This is a Blu-ray disc collection. It is not a DVD, nor a 4k Blu-ray. Your attempts at humour by commenting "what's a [insert physical media format here]?" are not as funny as you think.
  2. No, streaming is not higher in image or sound quality than this - even at 4k.
  3. I don't really care if your attempt at protesting streaming services is to "sail the high seas". You are not the hero you think you are by resorting to these methods, but please continue to let us know.
  4. This collection is in French. You will have to navigate the dreaded 2-inch hurdle of subtitles in order to enjoy this
  5. To my knowledge, this does not centre around car chases, guns or manly, muscular men doing manly, muscular things. Please hold onto your insightful opinions and share them the next time someone posts a terminator deal

Thank you for your time!

Well said OP. Mr Bean owes an awful lot to Jacques Tati and I'm glad that Rowan Atkinson acknowledges that fact.

Amazing collection of films - I already have this collection on Blu-Ray and I highly recommend it!

  • +1

    Tati collection

Very little dialogue, the dreaded 2-inch hurdles will be few and far between.

    • +4

The only 2 inch hurdle I have is in the bedroom :(

      • +1

        You sleep on the floor?

        • I sleep alone.

  • +6

Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday is one of the funniest films ever made. Brilliant absurdist comedy.

There is very little dialogue anyway so the subtitles shouldn’t be an issue.

    Nice find, thanks!

Traffic is unfortunately not great. Parade is interesting, but it's a TV movie so isn't quite as good as Playtime or Mon Oncle.

I can't see if this collection has the colour version of Jour de Fete, but that's worth seeing[Edit: It is included]. Also, there's a great doco The Magnificent Tati which came out in 2009 and anyone who likes these films should give it a look.

Edit: Here's a list of the differences between this boxset and the Criterion Collection one that is very similar.

Mon Oncle is one of my all-time favourites. The futuristic house and gadgets from 1958 are sublime.

  • +4

Thanks, grabbed this and the Oslo trilogy for the 12% discount

This looks like it could be cool. Classic cinema is much more appealing to me these days than so much of the modern dreck.
It's time to heroically set sail upon the high seas and see if I like this guy's work!

Just a heads up for the people that aren't hung up on buying physical media (no judgement), at least some of these movies are on a free service called beamafilm.com

  • Thanks for sharing, Ninternet. I'm looking forward to watching these.

    1. Watching foreign drama films doesn’t make you better or smarter than people that enjoy Hollywood blockbusters. Believing so will make you seem insufferable.
    • +3

Perhaps, but it will provide you with a different perspective on life. Other people being insufferable is dependent on the position of the observer.

    • +1

These are comedies, not dramas. "Hollywood blockbusters" follow a formula and are essentially all the same. They're designed to make lots of money. Strip away the special effects and they're just tedious films.

      • +1

Yeah, nah on that. It is all a spectrum of different tastes and views. I like Monsieur Hulot’s holiday but am less enamoured by some of the others. I like some Hollywood Blockbusters and find others tedious. Hollywood blockbusters can be well written but it is, generally, the first in the series. The sequels are often cashing in on the popularity of the first.

The first Indiana Jones and Star Wars films were quite revolutionary and well written for the era. The special effects were spectacular but it was the humour and interaction of the characters that drove the films. I try to watch a wide spectrum of films.

        • Afraid so. You're confusing popularity with creativity. Even Lucus admits they're mostly derived from old westerns and samurai films, so they're hardly ground breaking. They were made specifically for large cinemas at the time.

          • @Cheap Gamer: Just because an idea was derived from another source doesn’t mean it is unworthy of being appreciated. I would argue that a lot of the films based on Bradbury’s books are better than the source material.

The fact the films I mentioned were based on those sources is what makes them so great. The issue with Indiana’s hat was a nod to continuity issues associated with the original serials. There are people who argue that a lot of creative input nowadays can be traced back to Shakespeare. There are a number of film makers who are influenced by King Lear.

Me, I’m happy to acknowledge a film that is told with wit and well made, rather than something that is “artistic” and done poorly. Just because a film is popular doesn’t mean it is bad. Just because something is Auteur doesn't, necessarily, make it good.

  • If you like these films you should try to watch the Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Petits_Meurtres_d'Agatha_C…

It pops up on SBS every now and again. Agatha Christie mysteries. The second series is done in the fifties with a debonair detective and a female news reporter. Very stylish and funny.

I was like that once; However I started my 12-step program many years ago, and now I am joyfully unburdened from chronic multimedia collecting obsession:

Honesty: recovery can begin with one simple admission of being powerless over your addiction.
Faith: accept that there is a higher power to help you heal.
Surrender: recognizing that you alone cannot recover; but with help from your higher power.
Soul searching: identify your problems and how your collecting obsession affects you and others around you.
Integrity: admit your wrongs in front of their higher power and another person.
Acceptance: accepting character defects exactly as they are and becoming entirely willing to let them go.
Humility: humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
Willingness: making a list of those you harmed before coming into recovery.
Forgiveness: making amends may seem challenging, a great way to start healing your relationships.
Maintenance: nobody likes to admit to being wrong, but it is a necessary step in order to maintain spiritual progress in recovery.
Making contact: discover the plan your higher power has for your life.
Service: carry the message to others and put the principles of the program into practice in every area of their life.

    — Your best days are ahead of you. 🙏

    • Is this satire

    • +1

So you’ve taken the 12 step program associated with AA and turned it into for DVDs. I assume this is satirical.

      • Yes. 😉
However, it's not just for alcohol, it apples equally for all addictions — if you feel you have addictive behaviour, this is the popular approach; I'm not judging.

        • I’m not keen on the religious aspects. Happy for most of the rest.

  • I love Mr bean so i bought it
