Pretty brave of you to post this

    • You should see some of the Rep posts on here! Those guys are braver than me.

I recently posted this Amaysim deal too.

      • +5

As someone who has used optus remote data sims for about 4 months I can say that I 100% regret it. Not withstanding the day of no internet the data isn't really tracked in real time, it just seems to suddenly dissapear one day with no record of where and what used it all.

Then when you consider that the best plan for $'s per GB of data is the $30 for 25gb of data (30 days) you suddenly realise that no matter how cheap the initial device is the plans are horrendously expensive.

        • there is 500gb for $69 promo ongoing

  • +1

    Can this be unlocked?
It would come in handy with my Beryl AX when I travel.

    • +1

It would come in handy with my Beryl AX when I travel.

USB tether Beryl to your phone. That also charges your phone.

      Can this be unlocked?

I used to use these a lot. Until I got a GL.iNet travel router and used my 5G phone.

I never saw one that was actually locked. What they were was factory set to only work with the 4G bands one or other of the 3 carriers used. And they were preconfigured to log into that carriers network. You could pretty easily get in and change the log in configuration. But there was no means to get them to use the other carriers bands.

      • I do that, at home and when travelling.

      • I wasn't sure if this setup would work better with an iPhone or an Android. Can anyone confirm?

  • USB Modem usually goes for $9.95 or less when on sale , especially its not 5G, maybe wait for better deal

    • +2

Unfortunately those deals don't happen very often so posting this for people that might need something ASAP.

Just did a search & looks like the last time was March for $9.

      • People don't have a phone?
My $20 phone is the hole house wifi and my full time phone. Works perfect?

        • +2

What $20 phone can do that? Link please and I will post as a deal.

          • @Save 50 Cent: To be honest, a prepaid smartphone bought on sale ( which usually could be $70-$100)

would have all the current 4 G bands for the particular carrier (or sometimes for all carriers

or could even be unlocked), and would have hotspot capabilities. Easily possible he bought

a phone secondhand from a friend from such a deal for $20. Last year I bought a decent

Vodafone Prepaid phone with all the bells and whisles on clearance for $29 at Woolies,

just to mainly use as hotspot and youtube in order to use up a few remaining cheaply bought

            Kogan/Vodafone sims I had left.

            • @ozhunter68: I once thought that but couldn't find where to plug the external antenna in. Some of us live at locations where we only get a bar or less of signal.

              • +1

@philart: Yep, good point. As I live rural and travel a fair bit, I also have 4G routers and a

Telstra 4G fliphone which all have antenna connections for those times. Unfortunately

often the cheaper modems/smartphones do not have that, but some do.

                • @ozhunter68: I'm not sure whether this particular device has an antenna port. If it doesn't you're just as well off with a green tick phone.

                  • @philart: Not sure either as I usually stick with Telstra gear for travelling, but sometimes Optus and Voda

can have better signal in certain surprising areas. Yeah, reception can vary on what phone you use,

                    YMMV, so many variables lol.

          • @Save 50 Cent: Its 4+ years old. Also my media streamer (Bubble up) and Baby Monitor (Alfred) But surely any phone can do this these days.

    I bought 1 in April

    Was definitely an April fool.

    Should have returned it.

I’ve seen some USB OPTUS modems for $5 in a couple of Coles stores.

    P.S.

Not the actual products but a sticker price. South Australia.

    P.P.S

Optus Prepaid 4G E3372 USB Modem is $5 in the coles app if you search for “Optus Usb” and have selected buy in store.

no wifi, so can’t be used as a hot spot ?
have one of the older usb dongles, has wifi and makes great hot spot in the car for the kids , and when on holidays if holiday house doesn’t have internet and no need to worry about wear on battery, just leave plugged into the charger.

  • People still use these?

    • +4

Using a similar one now with a Boost 28 day sim deal, winning.

      • I don’t think I’ve used one for 10 years

        Why not hotspot?

        • +3

Yeah I hotspot from my phone as well but prefer this for it's simplicity. Less wear on my phone battery too.

Also if someone calls me then I can't be using my laptop at the same time when hotspotting.

        • +2

try not to wear down battery if needed for extended periods.

    • +7

You use these as backup, use the Optus Sim, stick it in the Routers USB and when there's an outage … Oh wait

  • what would be the most cost efficient way to setup up 2 wifi cameras at my nannas place? Are these 5G modems good for sustained use like a domestic, cabled up modem?

Im thinking one of these plugged into a USB wall outlet and 2 -3 wifi cameras off it.

    • this’s not 5G but 4G’s plenty good enough if you have a decent signal (optus bit of a crap ref point though for some)

  • Can I stick this permanently in my router as a backup connection if NBN goes down?

    • +1

Yes but it's Optus so this will also be down 👇

    • some routers support USB back-up, some don't check …. have used usb back-up in the past.

    eWaste

    • +3

I'd argue that any mobile phone with a built in battery is more e-waste than this because it doesn't have one.

      • +2

I'd also argue that any deal is potential e-waste.

        • I compost everything, so no waste.

          • +1

            @jv: Including Lithium batteries?

            • @bchliu: Isn't lithium a trace element ?

              • @jv: Sure. After China has gobbled everything up. It is to the rest of the world.

          • +1

@jv: jv grows his own phones, I see

          • +1

@jv: Yes I know. I went to your place in the country - Silicon Valley

    • -1

Since all smartphone can do hotspot and almost everyone has some old smartphones around, from this point, it's good if people know and put them into use as hotspot, to reduce ewase

  • Have one coupled with my data share Sim, it's ok. Can't really complain at all.

The connections are pretty good but yeah nothing to rave on about.
