Looks to be an ATL, picked this up a month back for $64 and it's a great little machine after flashing Garlic OS instead of the stock FW.

Plays NES, SNES, SMS, MD, GB, GBC, GBA flawlessly, I've also tried a few PS1 games and they seem to work pretty well.

Appears to be available in all colours. More info here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWLRWEooqd8

These are bloody awesome - I got one as a gift for a mate and it took everything in me not to just keep it.

    • +11

just buy another one for yourself

  • +8

PS: the new 'Plus' model was released recently.

    • may I ask what is the difference? can it play PS2 games now?

      • +18

        The differences are:

        • Now has Wi-Fi (which support Multiplayer & Streaming)
        • Bigger battery (3300mAh vs 2600mAh)
        • New Processor (Cortex-A53 vs Cortex-A9)
        • More Ram (LPDD4 1GB vs DDR3 256MB)
        • Apparently supports up to PSP now.
        • +2

PSP and Dreamcast play well, have seen their official promo videos and it's step up from choppy performance on RK3326 devices (cries with R36S in hands)

          • +3

@adrianhughes1998: Better than the RG35XX but I wouldn't get too carried away in assuming it can play all the PSP and Dreamcast library with ease until a few review videos are out. Their promo video may show Ridge Racer PSP looking great on the RG35XX Plus but I wouldn't take that as meaning everything works so well.

Also the RG35XX and Plus models are purely d-pad territory so not sure I would want to be playing Dreamcast on it even if it did work well.

            • +1

@Wuggle: Fair points, what I've seen so far does look promising fingers crossed it's better

Like you said without joysticks it makes it all a lot harder. Which is why I bought the R36S even though it's a slower chip. I love my.RG35xx and GarlicOS but will probably sell because of no joysticks and mushy d-pad.

          • @adrianhughes1998: Doesn't have sticks tho. So Dreamcast and N64 play won't be great. I am loving the increased power though. Can play NDS and PSP RPGs and the like very well.

Is Saturn working better on this than the R36S?

            • @serpserpserp: Yeah for the RG35xx+ it don't have sticks so it's a non starter for me. H700 chip looks very promising.

Guessing next year we'll see the RK3566 chip devices get even cheaper and perhaps so cheap alternative chips to be able to play the PSP/DC/N64 at this cheapo price point.

I honestly don't see paying more than 100 bucks for myself when it's only going to get outdated every six months :(

        • I think your New vs Old formatting swapped sides part way through.

      • +2

        ps2

        for $62.55 ?

        • Could probably buy an actual PS2 for less than $60.

      • If you want ps2, the only choice is the odin 2. And while it's an incredible machine due to it having fantastic battery life and bleeding edge specs for ARM platform, it's way too close in price to the original steam deck.

        • How? You can get the base model Odin2 for $500ish delivered. New steam deck is $1,000 ish and not available in Australia?

I'm just going to hold out until a better Odin2 comes along and I can pick those up cheaper. I just don't think I can emulation game for long term on these 3-3.5 inch screens. I need something bigger which thankfully Odin style devices provide, or maybe a heavily discount Legion Go would make me happy!

        • Honestly, the original Odin models and the 618 chips aren't bad for PS2/GameCube either. They take some tweaking on some games and won't brute force every game like the Odin 2, but they're fine if you're happy to do that.

    • Is there a link

      • +3

No deal(s) for it, since it was just released.

Available from the Anbernic Official Store via Aliexpress for US$76.99 (~A$118.62)

Personally I would wait for the Plus model to drop/become available at more stores.

        • trust for me to finally pull the trigger on one of these 2 weeks ago with a new one just released.

          • @cumova: Always the way

          • +2

@cumova: Not so bad, it doesn't have analog sticks so for the more powerful consoles Dreamcast / PSP you'd have to filter out everything except the D-Pad only games.

        • That's what I'm doing. It's not worth 2x the price of the original at the moment imho

        • please keep me updated as I'm keen!

          • @redevelop: It's actually $109 because there's a code 23AE06, but still too much for me

    • link??

    • Where can I find this one?

    • I can't really see the point of the plus model. The extra power is fine except the controls aren't really there for anything beyond the PSX. Just go with this model. If you want it for the next gen up, start looking at the 353 models, or the Retroid 2S, to name a few.

      • yeah, wifi and bigger battery, plus I guess the extra power could be helpful in some situations like some arcade games that the original struggles with maybe

  • +4

Would this be suitable for arcade emulation? Looking for something portable to scratch my Bubble Bobble itch.

Edit. Yes, it appears it would work fine for my needs.

    Cheers OP :-)

    • +1

Yes, forget Dreamcast, PSP and N64 though.

    • +3

Yes, I can confirm it does. I have bought one on the recent $64 deal and have installed Bubble Bobble in a number of versions (C64, Arcade, NES). One of my all time favourites back from my C64 days.

    • +5

A classic…. ask my wife for a video game she loves to play and this will be in her top 3. Admittedly she struggles to name more than 3 video games but anyway.

I think sometimes people are so obsessed wanting these things to play N64 or Gamecube that they miss out on all the fun arcade emulation from the 80s.

  • -2

I couldn’t see a games list, anyone see one?

    • +8

It does come with a lot of games but to be honest you're better off ditching the sd card, upgrading to GarlicOS and making your own rom collection. The included sd cards are absolute trash quality.

      • +7

correct. we are buying the console here not the card/games. google Tiny Best Set Roms

        • +1

I did, its been replaced by Tiny Best Set: GO! If that is of any interest to you.

      • Okay cool, I was just curious.

        • The included SD cards has quite a lot of games, but honestly, most of them are not that great (I am not a big fan of black and white games). Also, some of them don't even run properly.

You still want to get your own collection of ROMs.

  • New to this

Can this play PS1 PS2 games?

How many Mame games like TMNT Arcade and Turtles in time

    • +1

From the description "I've also tried a few PS1 games and they seem to work pretty well.", so I see it as: PS1 yes, PS2 no.

I wonder if N64 games would run on it.

      • +2

No N64, PS1 games worked well for me

      • +2

Retroid pocket 2S will get your Nintendo 64 3.5" screen (220-250)
Retroid Pocket 3+/ Flip will get you some gamecube and PS2 4.7" screen ($280-300)
Anbernic rg405m (4" screen) or Anbernic RG505 (5" screen) these play the same as the retroid pocket 3+ (same cpu - Unisoc T618)

        Compatibility list here - https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/z65s46/new_rp3_gam…

For full gamecube/PS2 though, you want one of the higher end devices like Steam deck, or Ayaneos, or Ayn odins. $600+

        • +2

Retroid Pocket 3+/ Flip will get you some gamecube and PS2 4.7" screen ($280-300)

Looks like US$138 delivered here, which is only about AU$210.

          • @NigelTufnel: Oh nice, don't know why I didn't check there, was just looking at the Aliexpress prices. Good find.

        • Legend. Thank you

  • $61.29 shipped for me. Went for the (marginally cheaper) retro colourway.

    • +1

      Powkiddy X55?

      • +2

Argh Powkiddy…. sorry can't go past a comment that says Powkiddy without wanting to warn people that their quality control and after sales support is both absolutely terrible. Some have a great experience, but it is a lucky draw and I will never buy anything Powkiddy branded again.

        • I've seen a few with Anbernic as well but more so for Powkiddy for sure. Dunno just have to take your chances j guess with this lot

    • +1

yep same. i cant even play switch handheld anymore, need output to tv

      • +1

I can’t see anything close up without my reading glasses but I’m fine when I do remember to use them.

        • +1

same again but sometimes it is just nice to NOT wearing glasses… i was fine 5 years ago suddenly eyes got bad.. thanks to covid lockdown i think

          • @CyberMurning: I play COD Mobile on my 12.9” iPad Pro and STILL need glasses 😂

      • Switch Screen is 6.2" so only thing really bigger than that is the Steam Deck at 7"

        • Legion Go is better 8.8"

    • Retroid Pocket 4 seems like it may not be far off. So the 3+ may get some heavy discounts (fingers crossed)

  • +10

Starter guide and review video here.

Be warned, after watching you will want to buy this.

    • +10

After buying one you will keep upgrading

      • Upgrading how?

        • +5

          Buying more retro handhelds.

          • +1

@daniltaru: It's not even a matter of upgrading, you just wanna collect different form factors.

            • +1

@Wonderfool: And different chipsets, and different screens, and so on and so on…

  • cash back? affil item?

  • Bought a white one. Thanks OP!

  • Mine arrived this week. It's incredible.

    • +1

Don't forget to buy reputable replacement micro SD cards.

  • Hmm how come emulation has.gone backwards? I remember like 20 years ago my PC could easily emulate SNES mega drive and even N64. I thought these days emulating these should be easy but these device still lag??

    • +3

These are a bit smaller than your PC 20 years ago. Theyre running on TINY SoCs

      • +2

Yeh I understand that but even phones 10 years ago can emulate this. I remember using my Galaxy s4 could emulated N64 quite easily

        • +1

You gotta look at pricing. This is $60 with a really nice IPS screen, controls, battery, speaker etc. Plus a (garbage) microsd.

          • -5

@theguyrules: Yeh but Galaxy s4 would also be cheap. Heck even those.mobiles from like woolies and coles for like $39 would have better specs than this. Galaxy s4 would have the amoled screens.

I feel like the price is more for the case and the buttons rather than the internal specs

            • @Jaduqimon: Yes. There is no reason to buy this if you are happy emulating on a phone.
Most people who like playing old games find the better format and controls worth a few dollars.

              • +2

@mskeggs: If you already have a phone and 8bitdo controller then you can make a better game emulator than this. However it's pretty convenient to have a dedicated device.

            • +5

@Jaduqimon: Who would want to play retro games with touch screen, yuk!

            • +1

@Jaduqimon: Your galaxy s4 a flagship priced device when launched that's now probably has only 30% battery life remaining, and will cark at any moment.

How is that even remotely comparable? Show us any new devices for the similar price range and we'll talk again.

              • @Wonderfool: I'm not comparing im just saying I expected the emulation technology to be better than it is now considering s4 10 years ago could easily handle N64.

        • Yeah, I agree. When I was trying out emulation on RPi's and phones years ago, N64 was quite doable for most. Surprised that a $60 dedicated retro gaming pad can't do N64. Seems like you're paying mostly for the screen.

      • And appear to be repurposed SoCs from older portable devices, etc which is how they can get the price down so much.

    • +3

I remember like 20 years ago my PC could easily emulate SNES mega drive and even N64. I thought these days emulating these should be easy

Do some research into HLE (High Level Emulation) and it will make sense.

Basically the emulation back then was inaccurate and just barley managed to run things without crashing/glitches and in many cases had very low compatibility.

Emulators now aim to be much more accurate, which requires higher specs.

      • -1

I remember I could run most games back then. And what do u mean by accurate? Like colors?

        • +1

Accuracy being speed, graphics rendering, sound etc. Probably not super noticable for most people tbh, but important for game preservation and true console emulation.

          • @PainToad: I see so why can't I opt to use a HLE if i don't care about accuracy? This.device.can handle it right?

            • @Jaduqimon: Because these cheap devices are basically built to host a cobbled together operating system that runs Retroarch. Everything you will emulate on this system runs through whatever Retroarch provides for emulation

              • @melonfresh: Some of the firmware/os do run standalone emulators.

why can't I opt to use a HLE if i don't care about accuracy?

You can if you want to write an HLE emulator that runs on a modern OS. But most emulator developers aren’t interested in that anymore for emulating older systems now that hardware has progressed and more accurate emulation can be achieved.

  • Bloody tempting but my Miyoo Mini Plus has just arrived in Australia.

    • +1

      Finally left Singapore.

      • Ha yeah sure did. Classic Auspost tracking.

  • miyoo or this? arhhhhh

    • +3

Here's a long and very detailed video comparing the two. I've linked to the timestamp with the final score between the two.
Personally I'd get whatever is cheapest at the time of purchase unless you really care about Wifi.

      https://youtu.be/Bdo44c2HsQY?si=rxYCetrV8TeAiPx5&t=1751

      • +1

As someone who has far too many retro game consoles I have to say wifi should not be dismissed. It does make life a lot easier with these devices particularly if you are the sort of user who likes to tinker and continually add to your game list on the device. It soon gets annoying having to keep removing the SD card rather than just being able to transfer rom files on to it over wifi. Plus you get the benefit of multiplayer if you want to go down that avenue.

However saying that the RG35XX is a solid little console and great if you get it for a good price. No doubt the new RG35XX Plus model is making some suppliers clear some old stock whilst they can.

        • +1

Plus cloud saves - when you play across a few different handhelds it's a godsend.

        • True - I always forget my RG351V has wifi but I havent looked into FTP on this. It will no doubt be useful on my Miyoo Mini+ with OnionOS though
