    Burn proof rubber leads

Uh, rubber isn't "burn proof" buddy. The material you're thinking of is silicon. Also, this is not a bargain. You can get good desoldering stations elsewhere for $100-150, and their specs aren't even riddled with mistakes.

Agree, I've been using a $30 desoldering gun off aliexpress for years. For $200 I'd expect a full hot air + soldering + desoldering station (for the occasional DIY, not for full time professionals (who aren't waiting on ozbargain to get their tools anyway)).

      • What's an OzBargain Goto for soldering station ? . Happy to spend around $200

        • +1

haha honestly i don't think there's enough of us here for there to be a goto. you'd have to be doing pcb repairs or like soldered ram swapping to justify a full station over just a soldering iron

Edit: Just went to have a look, this looks like a good set. I've never used it before and not really endorsing its quality or safety. Just thought I'd give you a rough idea of what to look for. Although getting a separate gun is much cheaper, about $50 for a hot air + iron station and $30 for a desolder gun.

@gosu: I can certainly vouch for the JCD 8898. Bought one from a deal on here many years back and it is still going strong with regular use.

  • This type of desoldering pump seems to work OK, with decent vacuum.

Amazon used to sell these as Katsu for around $199 https://www.amazon.com.au/KATSU-Tools-Desoldering-Rework-Sta…

You can also get them a bit cheaper but without warranty on Aliexpress as Pro'sKit SS-331

The original price of $309 seems a bit high

  • These are brilliant. I never used one until I worked at a place that had a knockoff, and they make mistakes so much quicker to rectify.

That said they still have to be used right if you want them to last. Namely, regularly cleaning it out. We used to desolder some things made with real crap solder, so the gun would regularly clog up if you werent careful, and once the solder set it wouldn't come out again easily. I got in the habit of poking the metal skewer cleaning rod down the barrel after each use, like a musket rifle shooter in the 1700s.
