Looks like these ship from the US. What's the risk of damage in transit? How does Amazon pack their HDDs?

    • And how much hassle is it to return them if they're mangled on arrival, I wonder

    • Mine have been fine

    • I bought 2 from Amazon US a few months ago. They arrived very well packed. A few people did get some DOA.

    • A few years ago, I bought two 14Gb RedPro from US over amazon.au. They packed it very well, but unfortunately, the delivery man threw it over fence rather than bring it to the front door.
WD Australia confirmed that it covers warranty in here.
I complained about such delivery to the Amazon. They offered standard return, but I preferred to try it and have no issues with HDD since.

      • Hard drives can take a pretty solid knock as long as they're powered down when it happens. They're usually rated to take several hundred g's in force while parked (off). The amount of force they're hit with depends on how quickly they come to rest - dropping a naked HDD onto the cement floor means they'll come to rest very fast and face several hundred g forces at peak (bad times), while some courier hoiking it over the fence in a well-padded cardboard package and protective plastic bubble/sheath will mean it hits a far lower peak force as it collides with the ground/slides/rolls (usually ok).

Just note the 10TB version listed is louder than all the other offerings https://imgur.io/Tyr9BA7?r

    • weird that the 12TB and above is more quieter

    bah no 8tb

  • HDDs are fragile. Amazon packaging is notorious for being probably the worst in the world. They'll put your item in a far too big box with little or nothing to stop the item from moving around.

I wouldn't trust buying a HDD shipped from them.

  • Deal is closed - price back up to $389. Thanks for listing it.

  • Man what a time to be alive.

I paid $700 for these originally..

  • Heads Up - This is back again

  • Yep this deal is back on - currently at 4% claimed

    • Only a few in stock though unfortunately. Less than what I need for the new NAS.

      Edit: on backorder now.
