It might be worth waiting for a N100 bargain.

Even now they aren't that much more expensive and this AliExpress one should be better at about the same price (N100 16GB DDR5 512GB).

    • I got mine in 9 days via aliexpress(to NZ) and was pretty happy with it. Amazon US has some black friday pricing going up for the kamrui minis that people might want to check out for ryzen options.

    • you seem to know your staff.

Could this be a replacement for a server to hold photos/videos and also have jellyfin/plex running for streams?

      thanks

    • Anything with AU Plugs? I only see EU or US plugs or is it a simple barrel plug of some sort?

Sorry for the noob question, I've been reading these tiny PC deal posts for months now and haven't worked out whether I should get one of these or the refurb USFF (e.g. HP 800 G3 mini) for a home server? I'm currently running a mini server on a rpi4 and looking to make an upgrade over xmas.

They are both ~$200 and both seem capable enough to run proxmox, plex with hardware transcoding, torrents and HA.
My understanding is that I should wait for an 8th gen USFF or an N100 for the tiny PCs on amazon.

Can someone give me an answer as to which would be better and why?

Both will be way faster than a rPi4 but N100 is a lot more efficient so way better GHz per Watt consumption - if that matters to you. One thing to check is Bluetooth support in Linux, if you need that for HA BT devices. I could get away from using the builtin BT by Ising BT proxy with an ESP32 running ESPHome.

  • Could this potentially be used for a Plex Server? Just for Photos and home videos? no Movies and TV Shows

    • I use a thinkcentre from 2013 that does Plex video excellently so this would be more than enough

    • Could handle that no problem

    Gimme dat $100 Kamrui!

  • Would this be okay for a student doing student stuff, and movie streaming

    • Yes I believe so. I think these N95/N100 chip are quite comparable to the 8th gen i3 or maybe even i5 U-type class laptop chip.

Although some students would like to play some games at which you are probably better with a Ryzen mini PC with their stronger intergrated graphic chops.

I got this unit from the last deal and here is my impression of it

    Positive:
Nice aluminium or metal like side casing. I believe most of the other brands are just all plastic.
2x ethernet LAN if you have a specific use case for it.
    Runs quiet.

    Negative:
Thermal throtling if you do a lot of full load CPU activity. Unsure if this is the case with the other brand or just specific to this brand trying to make it run quiet.

2.5" HDD mount is weirdly positioned on top of the the CPU fan which will make the CPU run even hotter because it's blocking the intake airflow and can possibly overheat the HDD as well if you are attaching a mechanical drive.

  • Love how compact it is. Need to replace my HTPC running an i5 6500. I cant figure out if this would an upgrade over it or a downgrade.

  • Got excited for a minute when I misread the title as "Dreamcast Mini"
