any deals on the amd expo version of these?

any consumer CPU supports 4 RAM sticks well these days? My 7950x can only run at 3600MHz

    • Couldn't you go with 2x48GB instead? Otherwise Intel should support 4 sticks better but I wouldn't expect more than 6000Mhz.

What do you mean? Most PC can run 4 RAM sticks (as long as they are the same kit) if the mobo has 4 slots?

      • The "well" is carrying a lot of weight there.
Early on DDR5 platforms had issues reaching advertised speeds in 4 dimm configurations and boot times would get very long
No idea if its better now.

        • Sure, I was thinking about DDR4.
DDR4 doesn't have these issues correct?

          • @congo: DDR4 generally doesn't have that issue. However, for AM4, I do find motherboards manner if you want to overclock above rated speed. B550 boards seem to overclock better than B450 boards. That said, if you are chasing maximum DDR4 overclock, 2 DIMMs still get you better results.

            • @netsurfer: Thanks no overclocking.
              My current B550M AM4 mobo has G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB (2x16GB).

Two additional 16GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo sticks would be $140.
Maybe better to just buy 2 new 32GB sticks at $200 to avoid any issues and reuse the old sticks on another PC.

      • With DDR5, if you want to run 4 DIMMs, you generally have to drop the RAM frequency a lot. With AM5 7xxx series CPU, officially, with 4 DIMMs, the default speed is DDR5-3600.

        • Thanks, sounds like a design defect with AMD5 mobo?

@congo: Dunno, need to wait for next gen AM5 to find out whether it is a memory controller issue (inside the CPU).

Intel, even for 13th gen, don't expect you can run 4 DIMMs DDR5 at rated RAM speed.

            • @netsurfer:

whether it is a memory controller issue (inside the CPU).

It's definitely due to the design, the current AM5 CPUs are made up of separate chips with the chip housing the memory controller being fabricated using an older slower node. The AM5 APUs however should support faster RAM since they don't follow the same separated chip design.

              • @BROKENKEYBOARD: The current issue isn't so much on supporting faster RAM. Memory compatibility issue is currently the main issue. I've encountered issue with DDR5-5200 with certain memory die type for example, but Hynix M or A dies running at DDR5-6000 or above seem to be fine. 4 DDR5 DIMMs currently is just a mess. Not sure AM5 APUs will fully address the issue (hope so). There is also the annoying memory re-training for DDR5 RAM (which has improved with newer AGESA, but still annoying).

Also, I found one of my AM4 CPUs can run with much better timings on a X570 board vs a B550 board (same CPU, same set of RAM modules).

update the BIOS. since a couple months ago AM5 can now get >8000MT/s with high end RAM and the new BIOS also helped get higher speeds on 4 DIMM kits

      • that's really a good news. Would u mind tell me the board and bios version you used?

    Any deals on DDR4?

  • Hi op, trying to send you a message for recommendations on what laptop to buy. Any chance you can message me, as your settings appear off for messaging

    Thanks!

  • Spektek B Die for the 6600 kit, never hear of them. Got this from the Z790 QVL list.

    • Seems to be Microns budget line.

    • SpecTek B-die = chips that did not make the cut as Micron A-die

  • Damn the 64gb looked nice until 4 x 16 would prefer 2 x 32

32GB back to normal price, others are still at reduced prices

  • Anyone in sydney wants to split 16x4 for $251, that's 16x2 for $125 each?

Amazon fully supported small and local businesses here and it's only right to support amazon in return. Thank you!
