Nothing really changed since last deal…
FYI, I'm back on the churn train so expect me to post more deals

Is it wise to keep churning credit cards if you want to do a pre-approval for a homeloan in 2 - 3 months time? Asking for myself

      • Yes it's fine.
Banks don't look at how many credit cards you have had to calculate borrowing capacity or risk. They do look at how many credits cards you currently have open and that will impact your borrowing capacity. I.e. if you have 4 cards with $10k on them each, paid or not, your borrowing capacity is reduced by $40k.

        • Incorrect.

It's actually reduced more than that by a factory of 2 or 3, should one wish to borrow for a mortgage.

They look at your credit limit on these cards, not how much you've spent on them. Most credit cards have a 6k or 10k credit limit on them.

          • @adrianhughes1998: Correct? We just said the same thing.

Banks only look at cards you have open (active) at your limit (i.e. paid or not) to see your borrowing capacity. Not ones that you have churned (closed).

Whether it's multiplied by a factor 2 or 3 on your limit, has not been my experience with CBA for 4 new home loans within 10 yrs. Maybe other banks?

    • Thanks for sharing, picked it for my next churn card, approved within a day.

There's a clause in the T&C's saying exclusions include "a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions".
I assume paying council rates is one of these exclusions?

Better deals with the same card but using Velocity points cos at least you get the 30K bonus from Velocity too..

Qantas has been sucking hard this year compared to velocity.

Its too hard to churn for both rewards programs.

Do you know if Velocity has a 'classic rewards' type of redemption?

      • +3

Haha maybe it is maybe it isn't, depends on your circumstances. Sometimes you gotta get crafty with meeting your minimum spend too. I used to think it's too hard but it's good to have your hand in both pots.

I got a whole bunch of velocity points, probably like 400k odd in the past year. Sprinkled a couple of Qantas in there too, so it's definitely achievable.

Velocity does have Rewards fares redemptions, have got some Singapore airline biz class and just got home last week from Qatar First Class. Still got plenty of kitty in the bank points-wise.

  • How do I get the 2 complimentary Qantas Club airport lounge passes? Someone please help

Ended up applying for this card. Immediately approved and got the digital version of the card to use

    • hey big spender

Lucky you. First time applying for any credit card. Have more than enough income and it was all good when I had to sign in to my bank that my income gets deposited into. But I must have been flagged for something as I have to wait for my income verification to go through after supplying payslips and bank statements. I'll just use the time to start lining up my expected purchases.

I didn't give an exact amount when it was for my expenses so perhaps that was it.

Note: Application to Westpac is not supported for the few people that use Firefox.

  • Two questions:

This would be eligible for the separate 30K points after 30 days promo?

What's required for the "sign in to apply" reduced fee? Just create a Westpac account beforehand?

    Thanks

  • Dumb question, if you are not with Westpac what is the lowest commitment required in order to take advantage of the reduced card fee?
Would it be to open a bank account ($5/month)?
    Anyone with experience here?

    • I just open an account.

      • Saving and spending. No fees if you meet the requirements

  • If I use Sniip to pay an ATO tax bill, will that definitely count towards the card minimum spend for the sign on bonus points? For the velocity version of this card if that makes any difference.

    • Yep.

  • anyone knows how long it takes for the bonus point to arrive?

    • within 12 weeks of meeting the intial spending requirements (amount $ and timeframe)

  • For churning purposes you're better off getting this unless you think 2 lounge passes are worth the extra $101. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/814281

    • You can get the Annual fee fully refunded if you call to cancel within the first statement. :)

      • Are you talking about this deal or one in 1jwoz's comment?
what would you recommend I say to the person on the phone?

      • just close my card after 1st statement and ask for the refund of annual fee via online chat, get 49 annual fee and 75 reward fee all refunded

  • How fast did everyone get their bonus points? I met spending criteria within the first month, but haven’t gotten the points after 2 statements

    • +1

Within 1 month of meeting the spending criteria

    • +2

I would advise to scrutinize your spend, there are a lot of exclusions in the terms, e.g rates, etc. If you didn't get them after a month of hitting it, most likely that's the cause, and hopefully you have some time left to put in some big inclusive spends in.

      Talking from personal experience.

  • Does this card give a pro-rata refund?
