Good open back headphone, I recommend checking reviews or even better listening to them before purchasing them. But if you've been waiting for a discount on them, I think this is the cheapest they've ever been.

IMO the build quality issues that people report with them sometimes would drive me away, but it is from Amazon so warranty should be great and they're easy to deal with if something goes wrong.

Also 30 Days money back guaranteed pretty much if you're not satisfied with it.

If you're paying around $600 for a headphone though, might as well stretch the budget a bit and get a Focal Clear for example from Addicted to Audio for $799 as it's the cheapest in the world on a discontinued product that's very highly rated.

Focal Clears went out of stock at A2A weeks ago.

    • Oh wow, considering the special has been running since March, it's not surprising they ran out, I guess.

I'll edit the main post and remove it as an alternative recommendation.

EDIT: I can't edit it because of the way the moderator edited the title. It no longer thinks this is an Amazon post and when I try to edit, it says you cannot change store.

      • I would personally take these over the focal clear. I think objectively the focals are better, but subjectively prefer the sound out of these. Just my 2c though. Most people would disagree.

        • The problem with Hifiman is poor built quality and ease of breakage.
Also, planar magnetic drivers tend to have more variation between units than dynamic. This means you will likely need to manual EQ to get the best out of them.

      • But doesn't Focal has their own issues with build quality. After having two HiFimans, I have no hesitation to go for another one. I have owned Hifimans for the last 3 years, I don't pamper them bu I don't see sign of fatigue or breakage. They looked as good as the day I got them. Of course I don't stamp on them, I think headphones are meant to be worn on the head not under your feet.

  • Tough choice up against the Ananda Nano, but otherwise this is a pretty good spot.

    • Hey jasswolf, if you don't mind sharing your 2c, I'm running a truthear shio and am tossing up between the Ananda and the Edition XS (the Nano is slightly out of budget) - is it worth it to get the Ananda over the XS at this price?

      • Ananda is better tonally and slightly more detailed and resolving with a sturdier build, while the Edition XS images a lot better with vocal timbre improvements and offers a little bit more bass quantity, but there's a 12kHz peak that you may not get around and the lower treble is a little recessed.

If you're trying to get an AU warranty, the Ananda is arguably the better buy if you're not competitive gaming or vocals focused, but you'll have to judge it on your use case.

I'd strongly recommend demoing the three at an Addicted to Audio if they're in your captial city, I'm sure they'd happily let you plug them into your SHIO, maybe prep with a Wavelet EQ ready to go (especially for the Nano, which is treble forward due to the first gen tech).

In terms of technical performance, the Nano doesn't trade blows like the other two do with each other… it blows them out of the water.

Muchas gracias - I guess I'll have to make a trip to Addicted to Audio and see if my budget can stretch

  • How does this compare to the Ananda Nano?

    • The Nano is much better from reports. I haven't heard the Nano myself, but here are two comments I found about it:

"In terms of sound, the original Ananda is brighter than the Ananda Nano, with notably less bass. The timbre isn’t as natural, and there’s more tendency for tinniness in the treble. Edition XS is the hottest in the treble, but has very strong bass extension, extending deeper in the bass than the original Ananda. XS lacks Ananda’s warmth though and can feel a little cold or hollow, particularly in comparison to the more natural, full Ananda Nano."

      And another quote:

"Nano is the latest version using the thinner nano diaphragm thickness that’s also on Arya, HE1000, and Susvara. Older Ananda still uses the thicker diaphragm that’s also on XS and Sundara. So you could say the Nano version is the cheapest of the hi-end Hifimans."
