    Good deal, match at Officeworks!

  • any coupon codes floating about?

  • Good deal. I got it from OW during recent deals for $89. It is very good. Try price match at OW.

    • You sure it was for the streaming model? $89 is a common price for the non wireless model.

Anything south of $100 is a bargain for this solid media player

  • Got 2 of these. Great units. Don't really need a 3rd one, but at this price its a bit hard to resist.

  • i have the Gen1 device, some times has issues wih MP4 files, but the PC works fine, does this support more codecs etc, or the same?

    • I have 3 Gen1 devices, spread around the house. I purchased a SMP from OW 2 days ago and have been impressed with the change to the frontend. Some of the reasons why you would want this over the gen1.
      - The ability to add themes. Look for Mojo, which is nice. Youtube it for a demo.
      - Scrapping works out of the box (looking up movie nfo from imdb).
      - Used in conjunction with Thumbgen you can get a very nice front end with movie ratings, descriptions, fanart, ie. movie sheets.
      - Connects to youtube much easier. i.e to show a trailer of the movie you want to watch.
      - Media Library means you can add fav folders to that, saving time moving between different sources.
      - Better remote, with red/green/yellow/blue colour buttons.

These are the main things I've noticed in 2 days. Considering OW wouldn't lower their price for me 2 days ago, and I had to pay their rrp of $125, I just bought 2 via this deal, so will return an unopened one under the old receipt. Price per unit worked out at $93.91.

      Thanks OP.

      • What a true ozbargainer find a means to avoid rrp in the end

does it store this on the hard disk so you can still use this when not connected to the internet?

        • It stores the jpg, xml and other files along with the media file, where ever that resides. So once you grab the images for the first time online, they are available offline.

    • There is no reason it should only play some mp4 files. I wonder if it wasn't really a mp4 container and just had a mp4 extension

      • id say it was just a mp4 container, not sure what the codec was, hence wondering if this supports more codecs.
skins etc dont bother me, as long as it logs into my share and plays movies, my tv/xbox/pcs/tablet/phone/wdlive all do youtube,

        dont know what mojo is

    • The only issues I've had with mp4 files is with the original WDTV running a WiFi stick. Over ethernet never had a problem. I switched to this version recently and the problem went away.

Question on connectivity performance - two years ago I purchased an Astone PVR Media Player & a WiFi N Dongle. The PVR is great, but the wireless dongle sucked ass. Awful ransfer rates and reliability between the Astone and my laptop rendered it useless (so now I just walk back and forth with a USB stick).

Is there any concern with this Western Digital wireless set up?

    • I have had no issues streaming 720p over wireless. Can't comment for 1080p because I rip my blu rays to 720. Based on wireless n speeds it should be fine in reality that could be very different.

  • is it worth upgrading to this from an older 2yo WD TV, if you're not going to use wifi ???

has it got a much better processor ?
    better interface ?

    thanks in advance…

I don't believe so unless you have a need for a 2nd one. Others may disagree. $89 is a lot to pay for an updated interface

  • Via this modem, can I watch movie from external hard drive on my Tv?

    • it's not a modem, it's a media player, but yes, you connect an external hard drive to it and it has outputs to view on your TV. It can play most video file formats…

if you connect it to your network, it can play the files from remote devices, so you don't need to attach a hard drive directly.

      • Thank Jv for correct me.so is quite a good deal isnt it?

  • Believe me or not ,i just got price match $84 with OW.i cant know where i can upload the receipt

  • Won't let me "add to cart".
Does this imply its sold out already?

    • Yup, it's sold out. You may consider to subscribe to our newsletter if you wish to be the notified of similar deals as this.

      • It's not sold out, it's still there but you've put the price up to $128.30

  • Omfg I missed out. Again ROFL

  • Appreciate your help for an AV newbie ;-) Can I use this device to watch, via a wireless connection, content on external USB drives which are connected directly to my laptop? In other words, what does this WDTV connect to wirelessley (my wireless router, presumably) and therefore can it browse content on a HDD via my laptop or do the HDD's need to be connected directly to the wireless router? Hope that makes sense :/

Are these devices wireless enabled or do I need one of those dongle thingos?

    Thanks.

    • Can I use this device to watch, via a wireless connection, content on external USB drives which are connected directly to my laptop?

yes, but you need to share the drive onto the network, or run a media server on your laptop such as Twonky…

Are these devices wireless enabled or do I need one of those dongle thingos?

this model has build in wireless, the cheaper WD doesn't

      • Thanks jv much appreciated.
